How to dress for Antarctica
Our staff member Jamie Watts explains how to get ready for anything that Antarctica could possibly throw at you.
Poseidon Expeditions, like other tour operators that take you on adventure cruises to Antarctica, wants you to be comfortable during your trip. Poseidon Expedition has a full page on our website dedicated to this topic. We suggest you review it carefully once you’ve booked your trip, so there is no “last minute” rush to get what you need. Here are a few helpful hints on what to wear on Antarctica tours:
1. Parka
You can check this off your list once you have reserved a cabin with Poseidon Expeditions because we provide a complimentary wind- and weather-resistant shell with hood that is perfect for both landings ashore and deck use.
2. Waterproof pants
These are essential for adventure cruises to Antarctica, as some splashing and spray is inevitable as you travel by Zodiac landing craft from the ship to shore and then clamber over the side into ankle-deep water.
3. Wellingtons
These are really important, but the good news is that Poseidon Expeditions provide rugged, exceptionally crafted Muck Boots or your use – no extra charge – while you are a guest aboard the Sea Spirit.
4. Thermal underwear
Choose a pair or two — both pants and long-sleeved tops — of varying weight or thickness. We’re not talking about the cotton type your grandparents wore; make sure to shop for modern man-made fibers like polypropylene that wick the perspiration moisture outward and away from the body, keeping you warm.
5. Socks, gloves or mittens, and warm cap
A heavier sock, such as wool, pairs well with a lighter polypropylene sock worn next to the skin. Bring several pairs. Same for the gloves or mittens. These should be waterproof, too.
6. Other essentials: good sunglasses, seasickness medication.
Dress comfortably and warm and have fun!

How to Dress for Antarctica! Packing Tips. Expedition Travel.
Figuring out what to pack for such a big trip can be a daunting task. In this video I will go over what to dress for expedition travel to Antarctica.
Gear Links:
Long Sleeve Base Layer - “32 degree” brand from Costco. They are available seasonally. I picked them up in fall/winter.
Long underwear - “Columbia” brand. I also packed another pair of “32 degree” brand from Costco.
The 32 Degree brand are available seasonally. I picked them up in fall/winter.
Pullover - Patagonia brand “R1”
Hiking Pants - REI brand hiking pants. Mine are a few seasons older. This is the most current pair that are available:
Rain pants - Marmot brand “Precip” rain pants
Down Jacket - Mountain hardwear Ghost Whisperer jacket
Buff -
Gloves - “Head” brand from Costco. They are available seasonally. I picked them up in fall/winter.
Mittens - Outdoor Research “Adrenaline Mitts”
Baseball hat - anything will do :)
Sunscreen - Recommended SPF 50 spf or higher. I had 30 and just remember to reapply. I really like the Trader Joe's brand.
Chap stick with sunscreen - Banana Boat
Sunglasses - Recommend a pair that are polarized. I have prescription sunglasses.

Going on an Antarctic cruise is an exciting once-in-a-lifetime adventure. However, it's important to know what to wear to keep yourself warm, when you step out of your cruise ship.

What to wear in Arctic conditions
A short video about how to dress appropriately at different temperatures.

NB: Julia is dressing, in each scenario, for a day spent outdoors on a husky safari (as opposed to popping out to the shops) for someone of tiny build / someone who is not used to being in arctic conditions.
Someone with more body fat / someone just heading outside for eg 1 hour, would obviously be able to get away with wearing fewer layers in each temperature zone. (And most of our guides comfortably wear 1-3 layers less than is shown here for each temperature zone.)

How to dress for the Polar Regions
Pack and dress for your best voyage! North Pole, Arctic and Antarctic cruises are waiting for you!
Whenever you go to the polar regions, you can expect a variety of weather conditions such as rain, wind, snow, and sunshine (even at midnight).
Our recommendation is to bring “polar quality” clothes that will fit into a layered clothing scheme. For example, packing lightweight long-sleeve t-shirts, turtlenecks, and a water-proof shell is better than packing five big, cotton sweaters and two huge “winter-down” coats.
Keep in mind that you may experience anything from t-shirt weather to sub-zero snow-squalls. Each day’s temperature might change quickly without any time for you to change your clothes – so layers are essential.
