How Colombians Spot Foreigners | Let's Talk About Expats in Colombia

How does a Colombian spot a foreigner?

Have you ever asked yourself how they found out about you being a foreigner? Is it that obvious?

In this video, we asked Ana our friend and partner. Ana was born and raised in Colombia. She helps foreigners relocating to Medellin for over 2 years now.

We asked her about her opinion, can she spot foreigners, and how does she do that?

The fun thing is a lot of foreigners coming here, no matter if Expats or tourists, they bring their usual clothes from back home with them. For them, it is normal to walk around like that.

For tourists, it's a vacation, so why should they dress up, that's at least what a lot of people think. Just by wearing those beach type clothes foreigners can be spotted.

Usually, Colombians tend to wear long pants even though it's hot outside, no matter if you are going to Santa Marta, Cartagena, Medellin or other warm to hot places, locals wear long pants no matter what.

Men wearing shorts or even walking around shirtless is something you will rarely find here.

Let's see what Ana has to say about the foreigners and how she as a local can spot them.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

Why Colombians Are SICK of Foreigners...

Recently signs are going up all over the tourist zones of Medellin telling foreigners to pack up and go home.

The reason for this? Skyrocketing rental prices due to gentrification which have made living in certain neighborhoods impossible for locals.

This negative attitude towards foreigners has some people worried as tourism to Medellin, Colombia reaches all time highs and the rise of rental prices has no end in sight.

In this video I interviewed a few Medellin locals to find out what they thought about this situation and foreigners in general.

What Colombians Think Of Gringos | Xenophobia In Medellin? | Real Talk Ep. 30

We show you the real Medellin from an Expat perspective!
???? Sneak Peek Services ????

Xenophobia in Medellin Colombia?
In the latest video, I talked about foreigners in Medellin. There was a note all over Poblado that said: we don't want mass tourism. And on top of that, there were several occasions where I saw Facebook posts from foreigners saying that Medellin is not local anymore. I wanted to debunk that by comparing Medellin to other touristic cities, just like Panama City, Costa Rica and more.

Find the video here:

Unfortunately, people concentrated more on the letter than the message I wanted to bring across. It seems like people understood the video wrong and made their own conclusion by saying, Medellin is Xenophobic.

This video should clear up the misunderstanding and help you understand what that letter and I wanted to bring across.

So again, is Medellin Xenophobic?
Not really in my opinion. Most Colombians we know, are more than welcoming and happy to meet people from all over the world. But as everywhere, there are exceptions. I would say 5% of the people aren't as welcoming in Medellin. But they have their reasons.

I don't want to go too much into depth but a lot of foreigners especially tourists come here and behave themselves in a way they would never dare to, in their home country. A lot of tourists think they're better than Colombians because they have more money and therefore more power. Many tourists come to Medellin for drugs and prostitutes and I personally totally understand why a country, a city and its people don't want to promote those things and attract those people.

There is always more to a story than most people tell us. If a Colombian might be rude to you, you most probably aren't innocent.

Watch the whole video in order to understand my point and understand that there is not just one way to see things.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

Why Expats Don't Like Gringos... But They Should! | Living In Colombia

???? Special Quarantine Discount! ????
Thinking About Relocating To Medellin? Get to know the good, the bad and the ugly, of Medellin.
???? E- Guide ????

Have you noticed, that most gringos/foreigners don't like to be around each other?
In this video, I'll try to explain why I personally think foreigners avoid other foreigners.

We had a lot of clients since we started our business How To Expat. And we noticed that almost all of them mentioned wanting to be far from other foreigners. They usually explain that they rather want to make local friends instead of meeting foreigners.

But why?
One of my theories is, that people want to be as local as possible. They want to be part of the community because this is the only way one can be a real expat.

Foreigners have a bad image in some countries and therefore they want to avoid each other to also avoid being seen as one of those bad behaving foreigners.

The above mentioned reasons are just a few of a lot more. Make sure to watch the video till the end to understand where I'm coming from and what I think an expat should actually do when it comes to other expats.

There Are Too Many Foreigners In Medellin | Real Talk Ep. 29

We show you the real Medellin from an Expat perspective!
???? Sneak Peek Services ????

Are there too many tourists/foreigners in Medellin? Is it true that Medellin is not local anymore?

There are surely coming a lot more foreigners to Medellin compared to a few years ago. But that doesn't automatically make it super touristy or overrunned by them. In fact, Medellin is still really local but does surely change some things for the tourist in order to make Medellin an attractive city to visit.

What does that exactly mean in numbers?
Medellin (the whole Aburra valley) has 4 Mio. Locals and just 0.5 Mio. Foreigners visiting per year.
Compared to New York with 65 Mio. tourists or even Panama with 3 Mio. tourist AND locals, I would say it isn't as bad as people like to portray it.

So again, there are surely seasons when there are more tourists in the city of Medellin but the number is still pretty low compared to other countries. On top of that, we have to mention, that it might seem like there are a lot of foreigners in Medellin but actually those are just in Poblado. El Poblado is the preferred place to stay for most tourist and obviously also the reason why other tourists see a lot of other tourists.

As soon as you leave Poblado and especially the area around Parque Lleras you will notice the change and the lack of tourists and foreigners in general.

So again, Medellin is not overrunned by tourists, the Poblado area around Parque Lleras is.

Hope the video helps to debunk this specific myth once and for all.

What is Gringo Pricing in Colombia - Travel Tips for Colombia

Gringo pricing is a phenomenon that occurs when vendors in Latin America charge foreigners higher prices than they would charge locals for goods and services. The practice is often considered unfair and exploitative, but some vendors justify it as a way to compensate for the perceived higher wealth and spending power of foreign tourists. In this essay, we will explore the reasons behind gringo pricing and suggest some ways that foreigners can prevent it from happening.

One of the reasons why vendors in Latin America engage in gringo pricing is the belief that foreigners are more affluent than locals. Many vendors assume that foreign tourists have more disposable income and are willing to pay more for the same products and services. They may also assume that foreigners have a different perception of value, and are willing to pay more for what they consider to be authentic or exotic experiences.

Another reason why vendors engage in gringo pricing is the perception that foreigners are less familiar with local customs and prices. Vendors may assume that foreigners do not know the local language or the local currency, and are therefore less likely to challenge the prices they are given. This can be compounded by the fact that many foreign tourists are only in the country for a short time, and may not have the time or resources to shop around for better prices.

Despite these justifications, it is important to recognize that gringo pricing is a form of discrimination that can be harmful to both tourists and locals. Tourists who feel they are being overcharged may be less likely to return to the country or recommend it to others, while locals who see foreigners being treated unfairly may develop negative attitudes towards them.

So what can foreigners do to prevent gringo pricing? One approach is to educate oneself about local customs and prices. This can include learning some basic phrases in the local language, familiarizing oneself with the local currency, and researching typical prices for goods and services before arriving in the country. By doing so, foreigners may be better equipped to negotiate fair prices or recognize when they are being overcharged.

Another approach is to shop around and compare prices before making a purchase. This can involve visiting several vendors or stores to compare prices, or asking locals for recommendations on where to find good deals. By doing so, foreigners can get a sense of the typical prices for goods and services in the area and avoid being taken advantage of.

Finally, it is important to remember that haggling is a common practice in many parts of Latin America. While foreigners may be uncomfortable with the idea of negotiating prices, it is often expected and even appreciated by local vendors. By negotiating prices in a respectful and friendly manner, foreigners may be able to get a fair price for goods and services without feeling taken advantage of.

In conclusion, gringo pricing is a phenomenon that occurs when vendors in Latin America charge foreigners higher prices than they would charge locals for goods and services. While some vendors justify this practice as a way to compensate for perceived differences in wealth and spending power, it is important to recognize that it is a form of discrimination that can be harmful to both tourists and locals. By educating oneself about local customs and prices, shopping around and comparing prices, and negotiating prices in a respectful and friendly manner, foreigners can prevent gringo pricing and enjoy a fair and enjoyable travel experience in Latin America.

Should You Be Offended Being Called Gringo? | Real Talk Ep. 42

We show you the real Medellin from an Expat perspective!
???? Sneak Peek Services ????

We got to the point where people even email us to tell us they feel offended by the word Gringo. I think there is some explanation needed.

The term Gringo is used in different ways, but let’s focus on Colombia. If a person calls you Gringo, they don’t mean to offend you unless they say it in a rude way. Instead of calling you Gringo they could call you “extranjero” which means foreigner.

Back in the days, it was mostly used for North Americans but these days it’s a general term used for foreigners.

People in Latin America are not so fond of political correctness. Meaning they call you the first thing they noticed on you, which can mean they call you, fat, black, skinny, Chinese, etc. This is in no way meant to sound offensive but just another way to communicate here.

Latin America is not the place for political correctness and this is important to know before coming here. Don’t get offended by those terms, visiting another country with other habits and cultures requires an open mind to understand differences.

Watch the whole video in order to find out more about the word’s origin.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.
