How Saudi Arabia Is Turning Desert into Huge Farmlands

x

I Had NO IDEA What Indian Farmers Did, Until...

Until I spent a year visiting my Wife's farm in India, I had no idea about our farming family's work.

When I first arrived at the farm, I couldn't believe that their fields, which just looked like sand, could grow anything. But what did I know about farming? Not much! I'm just a city slicker.

I went back to the farm in the Churu District of Rajasthan months later to find the fields alive with mustard (सरसों) and chickpeas (चने)! I returned again in the monsoon to see grain (बाजरा), lentils, and pulses growing too.

I couldn't believe it.

It showed how little I knew and how much I had to learn from my Wife's family in the village.

Farmers, villages, and villagers are the heart of India, and we have a lot to learn about pure living and hard work from them.

Just to clarify, that is not my wife next to me at 00:16 ????. This is my wife @ManishaMalikIndia.

WOW!. SAHARA DESERT IS TURNING INTO A FARMLAND OASIS, WITH FMNR METHOD.

Australian agronomist Tony Rinaudo is turning African deserts into forests.

Implementation of FMNR
Research has shown that tree-based farming systems store carbon in above and below
ground biomass and organic matter contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
3
In semi-arid regions on farmland, regenerated trees are sequestering around one ton of
CO
2
per hectare per year, while in more humid, forest settings, regenerated forests are
sequestering approximately 15 tons CO
2
per hectare per year. There are also multiple cobenefits, including provision of ecosystem goods and services such as increased soil fertility,
pollination, pest predation and improved microclimate.
“Before there were no trees, it was bare degraded land and temperatures were very
high. After protection, the trees started growing fast, wild life started coming back,
the temperature has gone down, and rainfall is getting better.”
– Child Members of Environment, Club Humbo, Ethiopia -
World Vision has demonstrated ongoing experience implementing FMNR in over 27 countries.

Have you ever seen a lake in a desert? ????️???? Here is one – in Namib Desert!

There’s one in Namibia’s Namib desert. Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by sand dunes. It’s covered in water after a good rainy season. You can even swim in the shallow lake. ????‍♀️
Our tip: climb up the dunes at sunrise and enjoy the view. Then go swimming. But be careful, the floor of the lake is very slippery.

Saudi Arabia, Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape

The Nomination File of Al-Ahsa Oasis, An Evolving Cultural Landscape, was realized by a team composed of RCHeritage and IPOGEA, an Italian company specialized in desert environment, water management and oases. The support of oasis experts was instrumental in the definition of the nomination principles and in the identification of the property perimeters.
This nomination is the first example of cultural landscape proposed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and a very large serial property comprising not only desert land and palm trees groves, but also urban neighbourhoods and agricultural lands.

The work was carried out in coordination with the STCH (in Riyadh and in al-Ahsa) and the Municipality of Al-Ahsa. A series of presentation meetings took place in Al-Hofuf to involve the local community and the ensemble of the institutional stakeholders. Two management seminars were also organized before and after the submission of the file to UNESCO in January 2017.
Located in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape is a serial cultural property constituted of twelve components covering an area of 85 km2, surrounded by 7 buffer zones extending over 215 Km2.
It is an organically evolved landscape that developed by association with, and in response to, its natural environment, and an example of continuing landscape retaining an active social role in Al-Ahsa contemporary society. The nominated property shows the sustainable evolution of the oasis and of its associated human settlements, where the physical and functional relations between the natural landscape, the water springs, the water canalization system, the villages, and the cities create a continuously evolving human-created oasis environment. The association of large watered date palm groves and urban areas creates an exceptional cultural landscape presenting, through its continuous practice, a unique evolution of an ancient cultural tradition bearing testimony to the sedentary human occupation of the area throughout the millennia and to its evolving sustainability until the present day.

Al-Ahsa Oasis is the largest oasis in the world with more than 2.5 million palm trees, and it preserves material traces representative of all the stages of the oasis history, since its origins in the Neolithic to the present. The unique role the oasis of Al-Ahsa played for hundreds of years — and continues to play in the modern kingdom of Saudi Arabia — is witnessed by the many fortresses, historic mosques, springs and canals that dot the modern city and the orchards. Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape, remains today the largest agricultural area in the Arabian Peninsula, and a working and living environment that has developed in direct continuity with its origins and its past.

Walking Around Saudi Arabia Agricultural Farm

Agriculture in Saudi Arabia is focused on the export of dates, dairy products, eggs, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, and flowers to markets around the world as it has achieved self-sufficiency in the production of such products.[1] The government of Saudi Arabia is heavily involved in the agriculture industry, and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture[2]is primarily responsible for the agricultural policies in the nation. The private sector also plays a role in the nation's agriculture, as the government offers long-term interest-free loans and low-cost water, fuel, electricity, and duty-free imports of raw materials and machinery.

Although Saudi Arabia is widely thought of as a desert, it has regions where the climate has favoured agriculture. Rain falls in winter every year in Saudi Arabia but with an average of maximum 100mm except in the Southern area of the country [2]. The government, in particular, has aided with this process by converting large areas of desert into agricultural fields.[1] By implementing major irrigation projects and adopting large-scale mechanization, this has progressed in developing agriculture in the country, adding previously barren areas to the stock of cultivatable land.[3]

Two patterns of income distribution emerged: traditional agricultural regions did not benefit from the development program, and the government's financial support led to the establishment of large-scale agricultural production units. Some of these were managed and operated by foreign entities and owned by wealthy individuals and large businesses. From an environmental viewpoint, the program had a less than satisfactory impact. Not only has it caused a serious drain on the kingdom's water resources, drawing mainly from non-renewable aquifers, but it has also required the use of massive amounts of chemical fertilizers to boost yields. In 1992 Saudi agricultural strategy was only sustainable as long as the government maintained a high level of direct and indirect subsidies, a drain on its budget and external accounts.[5]

The contribution of agriculture to the gross domestic product (GDP) in 1984 was 3.3%.[6] In 2001, it increased to 5.1%, but it was due to decline in oil revenues.[6]
Traditional agriculture and pastoral nomadism
In the past, the bulk of agricultural production was concentrated in a few limited areas. The produce was largely retained by these communities although some surplus was sold to the cities. Nomads played a crucial role in this regard, shipping foods and other goods between the widely dispersed agricultural areas. Livestock rearing was shared between the sedentary communities and nomads, who also used it to supplement their precarious livelihoods.[3]

The water supply in Saudi Arabia, and specifically the lack of water has always been the major constraint on agriculture and the determining factor on where cultivation occurred. The kingdom has no lakes or rivers. Rainfall is slight and irregular over most of the country. Only in the southwest, in the mountains of 'Asir, close to the Yemen border and accounting for three percent of the land area, was rainfall sufficient to support regular crops. This region plus the southern Tihamah coastal plains sustained subsistence farming. Cropping in the rest of the country was scattered and dependent on irrigation. Along the western coast and in the western highlands, groundwater from wells and springs provided adequate water for self-supporting farms and, to some extent, for commercial production. Moving east, in the central and northern parts of the interior, Najd and An Nafud, some groundwater allowed limited farming. The Eastern Province supported the most extensive plantation economy. The major oasis centered around Al Hasa, which enjoyed high water tables, natural springs, and relatively good soils.

Bedouin themselves needed protection. Operating in small independent groups of a few households, they were vulnerable to raids by other nomads and therefore formed larger groups, such as tribes. The tribe was responsible for avenging attacks on any of its members. Tribes established territories that they defended vigorously. Within the tribal area, wells and springs were found and developed. Generally, the developers of a water source, such as a well, retained rights to it unless they abandoned it. This system created problems for nomads because many years might elapse between visits to a well they had dug. If people from another tribe just used the well, the first tribe could frequently establish that the well was in territory where they had primary rights; but if another tribe improved the well, primary rights became difficult to establish. By the early twentieth century, control over land, water rights, and intertribal and intratribal relationships were highly developed and complex.

The UAE’s sustainable food plan involves growing rice & developing ‘soil’

With the UAE almost wholly reliant on food imports, food security is a national priority.

The Black Sand Dunes of Saudi Arabia! A secret camping spot in the volcanic lava fields!

Hidden in between the volcanoes of the Ḥarrat Lunayyir lava field between Umluj and Al Ais Saudi Arabia, is one of the most incredible secret locations in the world - the black sand dunes of Saudi Arabia! Harrat Lunayyir means the lava field of the moon, and it 100% felt like we were on a different planet.

All the videos and drone footage only just begin to show how amazing this place is. A long past volcanic eruption has left jet black, gravel-like remnants that form huge dunes you can explore. We did some digging to discover this beautiful place, and it definitely didn't disappoint! After spending a beautiful night camped on the dunes, we took off the next morning to drive through the lava fields and even hike a volcano.

This place is out of this world. It's definitely worth visiting, but it's also somewhere that not many people know about, so if you are able to find it please, please, please be sure to take care it, pack out your trash, and follow the trails that others have already made in the dunes!

▬▬▬▬▬
