In 2016 we set off to explore the world on a sailboat with absolutely no previous experience. We didn’t know what to expect or how to budget for such an unknown lifestyle.
Sure, we had done several google searches on “how much does it cost to sail around the world” but we couldn’t find anything all that helpful (sooo much more info out now). It was mostly a bunch of hypotheticals or listicles of what to consider.
Some things were easier to guess at, like how much we would spend on food (because we’re still going to eat). But we had no idea what we would be spending on things like fuel, repairs, and maintenance.
Over the past four years, we’ve sailed to seven countries and put over 13,000 nautical miles under our hulls.
We’ve learned a lot in that time and learned a lot about our spending habits in this new salty life.
Everyone always says BOAT is just an acronym for Bust Out Another Thousand. And in the beginning, it felt that way. The first year was buying and outfitting for off the grid and it was a total wallet buster!
But since then, we’ve been able to stick to our budget pretty closely and we’ve been pleasantly surprised.
So, what does it cost to sail around the world?
Not many people are willing to share their personal expenses or talk about money (so please be kind). But it’s hard to plan a big life change on hypotheticals. So, here is what it costs us to live and travel full time on a sailboat.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for almost a decade.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
Because... Life is an adventure!
Extraordinary moments out there for anyone willing, and wanting, to go after it. Ya know life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

The ACTUAL cost of our 1st year living on a boat FULL-TIME! - Ep 22 Sailing Knot Vikings
Today we wanted to share something a bit special with you guys.
We have been posting videos for a bit more than one year now and while back in Sweden we wanted to take some time and see how much money it has cost us to cruise full time for a year.
Before we left we saved for almost 7 years to be able to take time off from work and go on this trip together.

We are a family of 3: Chris, Steffi and Leo who left Stockholm in Sweden June 2017.
This is our story on how we sail our 37ft Najad 37 sailboat from 1981 across the North Sea, down the European coast, through the English channel, Bay of Biscay and lately across the Atlantic.
OUR STORY
We took the big step of quitting our jobs and made some major changes in our lives to fulfill our dream of going long distance cruising together. We don't have a set plan on where we are going nor for how long we will be gone, but instead we try to explore the world together as a family and live our lives from day to day as much as we can.
While uploading this we are currently back in Sweden and have left the boat in Grenada for the hurricane season.

In 2019, we wanted a new boat that was bigger and had a longer range, so we targeted 40-footers with diesel power to achieve both of these goals. With our criteria and budget, we searched for a diesel-powered Sea Ray 400 Sedanbridge 2001 or newer. After scouring the Internet we found a boat on the Chesapeake Bay which would become Calypso II.

Calypso II is moored in Sippican Harbor in Marion, MA - in Buzzards Bay. We use our boat to explore the islands, ports, coves, and harbors of this amazing place.
For overnight boating, we often head to Cuttyhunk Island, Martha’s Vineyard Island or Nantucket Island, off the coast of Massachusetts. In 2021, we plan to head to Maine to explore some of the beautiful harbors and ports of Southern and Mid-Coast Maine.

Without doubt, the most common questions we receive are how much does it cost to be a nomadic liveaboard? and how do you afford to do it?. In this week's episode we're going to break it down for you from the initial costs we faced buying Talia and preparing her for cruising, through to our monthly spend, and then finally to how we manage to keep food on the table.
All of our costs so far have been in Euros but as a lot of our viewers come from other parts of the world we've added USD as a reference currency.

In today's video we visit with a couple who have chosen to slow travel the world by boat with their daughter. They've decided to drop anchor in Kotor Montenegro after three years on the sea for a while and run a yacht charter literally from their home. In this video we'll learn about their lifestyle and cost of living, and what you should consider if you're dreaming of yachting around the world, the Caribbean or Mediterranean. This can also be another concept for those looking at what's called roaming retirement or roving retirement.

Due to the restrictive rules of the Schengen Montenegro is becoming more and more popular for Investors and Expats from America, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, & the United Kingdom seeking a home in Europe. The Schengen Agreement has and continues to ruin the dreams for millions around the world seeking to slow travel through Europe. Gone are the days of crossing from Spain to France and resetting your passport clock in a neighboring country. If your country is not a member of Schengen you have to look at the 26 Schengen countries as one, an American can only spend 90 days out of 180 days between all 26 countries. Montenegro and a handful of European countries including the UK are options to live in to reset your Schengen clock. If you're an American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander, or from South Africa a Non-Schengen country like Montenegro should be in consideration for your investment budget. Even if you're not choosing residency in Montenegro, it's a great place to live 90 out of 180 days if you need to leave the Schengen. There are some residency options available through a few Schengen countries, but most of these require €250,000-€1,000,000 invested in or paid to the country. Italy has some options that are vaguely written and subjective to local decisions that can be inconsistent. To us Montenegro is the easiest and possibly most cost effective options available if Europe residency is desired.
We bought our home in Kotor Montenegro in 2016, we were enchanted by this medieval city from first sight. With the low cost of living, Mediterranean climate, UNESCO Heritage designation, and it's popularity as a tourist destination for Eastern Europeans and the British it made perfect sense to buy here. As we travel Europe over the next 5 to 10 years we will be using our home in Montenegro as our home base, rest assured our journey is not ending.

From conservation, to projects and maintenance, to just mental shifts in how we approach our daily lives - we discuss it all as we cruise from Islamorada to Marathon in the Florida Keys.

Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year.
