How Asia beat Covid-19

ASIAN AMERICANS ON THE CORONAVIRUS #stayhome

Share with a friend & let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

TAKEAWAYS:
1) Cherish this time with your parents because when you’re young - all you want to do is get away. But when you’re older, all you want to do is be there at a time like this.

2) A lot of businesses got affected by this and a lot of jobs were lost. All restaurants are takeout only, and some just closed completely and some closed permanently. A lot of people can’t go to work and make money

3) Harassment, violence and targeting of Asians is completely unwarranted, undeserving.

4) This is a really significant event that is probably going to change a lot of how we move as a country.

The GHI Big Debate Webinar - Your survival kit for the Covid-19 crisis

Sponsored by JBT Aerotech

Bruised and battered aviation operators are facing any existential threat as they try to ride out the Covid-19 crisis. Recent GHI research found 34% of stakeholders describing their business mood as ‘pessimistic, taking a huge financial hit and braced for worse’. Around 64% of sector leaders anticipate depleted flight volumes for up to two years and cash flow reserves are under severe stress.

So, what can our industry do to bolster its position and outlast the pandemic. How will social distancing take shape in the ground handling environment and are we about to see a transformational market shift towards more integrated stakeholder collaboration?

New Zealand's Covid-19 Response: Explained.

A look at how New Zealand was able to be so successful in their Covid-19 fight, their strategy of elimination compared to UK and US policy and how before any country could recover economically they had to tackle the public health crisis.

CORRECTIONS:
1) I misspoke and said the 1917 flu pandemic. This is of course false, the pandemic occurred in 1918.
2) At 5:31 I state that areas have to go into 'the most stringent lockdowns' when any Covid cases are reported. I was trying to get across that the lockdowns were very stringent compared to international standards. However, Auckland only went to alert level 3, rather than 4 - so the lockdown was not the 'most stringent' for New Zealand.
3) At 5:17 Ardern is giving a briefing with the Finance Minister, not the Director of Health.

I'm not an epidemiologist. Feel free to critique me down in the comments. I do, however, try my best to back up everything I say with reliable sources - see below.
______________________________________________________________________________________

FAQs:

1) How can you compare New Zealand to the UK or US when they have much larger populations and New Zealand is much less densely populated?

It's pretty clear that NZ has a vastly smaller population than either the US or UK. However, Covid-19 transmission - unlike many other metrics such as GDP - does not grow relative to country size. If you look at this graph linked below, you can see that the growth of the virus was very similar in all countries (2-day doubling time). Hence, the population difference seems not to have made transmission in NZ lower in a 16statistically significant way.

Even if you look at any of the metrics in relation to population size (eg. Deaths per capita) still NZ has done vastly better. NZ deaths per million: 5.39. UK deaths per million: 1851.65. US deaths per million: 1614.23
Graph:

2) Why didn't you speak about the great trust of government and adherence to lockdown rules in New Zealand?

Didn't mean to downplay this factor - certainly people not taking the virus seriously have had a terrible effect on many countries' outbreaks. However, I wanted to point to tangible things the UK government could have done better.

Stating that the UK's population took Covid-19 restrictions less seriously (some denying the virus completely) presents two problems:
1) As far as I'm aware, there's not been any comparative studies on public acceptance of covid-19 restrictions so anything I did say wouldn't have been sourced.
2) Even if it was clear that New Zealanders took the virus more seriously, it's hard to draw any policy recommendations for the UK gov from this, other than improving communication.

COVID-19 Update from SOUTH KOREA

COVID-19 update from South Korea. For a while it appeared that South Korea was going to be heavily impacted by the coronavirus as Italy, China and the United States wre. In fact, several week ago coronavirus death South Korea and the U.S. were the same. Today, however, South Korea has lost 300 people to the virus and the U.S. has experienced over 75,000 deaths.

So what did South Korea do differently to limit the spread of COVID-19?

We spoke to V.O.A. Seoul Bureau Chief William Gallo for the answer to that question.

William Gallo is the VOA Seoul bureau chief and regional correspondent. His main focus is U.S. policy in Northeast Asia. Prior to coming to Seoul, William covered U.S. foreign policy and international affairs for VOA at the White House, Pentagon, and State Department.

Sequoia & Vertex on dealmaking in times of COVID-19

Here's our conversation with Chua Kee Lock, CEO of Vertex Holdings in Singapore, and Abheek Anand, Managing Director of Sequoia Capital in India.

In the six weeks since the World Health Organisation declared the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic, business activity globally has ground to a near halt, corporate valuations are tanking, and investors are likely rethinking investment theses.

In the venture capital sector, thousands of startup founders are now wondering when funding will dry up. To be sure, DealStreetAsia data indicate there was a spike in the number of deals in Southeast Asia in the first three months of the year, as startups raced to finalise funding before the crisis deepened. The next few quarters would be the ones to watch. How much of an impact will COVID-19 have on tech investment in Southeast Asia and India?

How COVID-19 crisis would alter the course of future of tech with Alfred Chuang, Race Capital

Fireside chat: How COVID-19 crisis would alter the course of future of tech
with Alfred Chuang, General Partner, Race Capital
In conversation with: Joji Thomas Philip, Founder & Editor-in-Chief, DealStreetAsia

Major behavioural, economic and market shifts world-over could also give rise to the most impactful and transformational technologies. The Silicon Valley early-stage VC is placing its bets on the future course of tech.

COVID-19: Catalyst or Pitfall for Sustainability in Tourism?

After the Corona pandemic, sustainability and climate protection will once again shift into the global focus. Will politicians use this reset to push sustainability or will the focus initially be on economic recovery? Will we travel more sustainably in the future anyway as we make more domestic trips, avoid air travel and cruises and city trips are replaced by nature tourism? What are the future plans of tour operators and destinations, what are cruise operators and hotels preparing for in terms of sustainability?
