They all have to wake up in cramped spaces to see the prosperity of Hong Kong that they are out of reach.

This week I visited a 100-year old village in Northern Hong Kong. Its secluded, peaceful, the people are friendly, and it generally the rent is much less than the rest of the city…so long as you don't mind your house being three feet away from your neighbors'.

Japan is known for its strong emphasis on cleanliness, efficiency, and tidiness. It is not common to see slums in Japan as in other countries, due to strict zoning laws and building regulations. However, there have been instances of informal settlements or poor living conditions in some parts of Japan.
One example is the Kamagasaki district, located in the southern part of Osaka. This area is known as a gathering place for day laborers, mostly men, who work in construction, factories, or other low-paid jobs. Kamagasaki, is considered one of the poorest areas in Japan, with a high rate of unemployment, homelessness, and social isolation.

So Lo Pun 鎖羅盆 | Exploring Hong Kong's Ghost Village
So Lo Pun was one of the destinations in Hong Kong I most wanted to visit. I learned about this place after arriving in Hong Kong back in November, but didn't end up visiting until nearly nine months later!
The journey to So Lo Pun and the nearby Lai Chi Wo is definitely worth the effort. There is a ferry service, but only runs on Sundays. The rest of the week, you will need to hike through the Plover Cove Country Park to get in, and be sure to bring lots of water!

Exploring Abandoned Villages in Plover Cove | Hong Kong Vlog #13
Although Hong Kong is small, it offers a lot of good hikes. Plover Cove is one of them. Starting from Fanling, you can get a minibus to Luk Keng. From there, it's a long hike passing through several abandoned Hakka villages. You can also see Shenzhen across the water during the hike.
Luk Keng Chan Uk and Fung Hang are only semi-abandoned villages. Around the 50s-70s when Hong Kong was governed by Britain, after gaining British citizenship, many citizens around this area moved to Britain, as work was scarce. Many also moved out of the villages into the city. Kai Choi School in Kuk Po was built in 1928 and was used until 1993.
Yung Shue Au is a ghost town. Hidden deep in the forest, the derelict buildings have been reclaimed by nature. Trees and foliage cover what remains of the houses. I arrived there just as it was starting to get dark, which added to the creepy atmosphere. It felt completely cut off from the rest of the world, surrounded by trees. The houses were dark and silent, and belongings lay strewn around, as though everyone left in a hurry. There were a couple of portraits in one house that'd had the faces slashed so the faces were no longer recognisable, and there were children's toys and shoes lying around. These made me wonder where the people who lived there are now.
Since it was a ghost town, I wasn't expecting to see anyone there, so naturally, I was terrified of going upstairs and seeing someone there! I would recommend going early in the day (even if you have to drag your friends out of bed) as it is a long hike, and it's a pitch black trail. Funny story; when walking back in the dark, I heard something up ahead. It was literally pitch black and I was still in the woods so I felt extremely anxious. My friend turned the torch on his phone on and it turned out it was just an elderly man walking home in the dark :D
