Hidden Gems of St. Helena

It's one of the most isolated -- as well as intriguing -- places in the world. It remains a British outpost smack in the middle of nowhere, deep in the South Atlantic. And while it's difficult to get to...this is a place you definitely want to visit. Welcome to the brave...old...world of the island of St. Helena. The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

Flying to St Helena Airport

This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place on 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. Here's a video with my thoughts on that situation:

This video is about flying to the St. Helena Airport. St. Helena Airport is one of the most challenging airports in the world. Less than ten commercial airline pilots are certified to land here!

At either end of the runway are massive cliffs, which create challenging wind conditions.

I’ve wanted to visit St. Helena for a long time. When the St. Helena Airport received its first commercial flight in 2017, the trip became far more viable for me. Before St. Helena Airport opened, a trip there required a five day boat trip just to get there.

St. Helena’s role in the Age of Exploration cannot be understated. The Portuguese used St. Helena as a secret base for restocking their ships (they left a heard of goats and planted citrus trees. It then became a key possession of the British East India Company before it was suddenly converted into a prison for the world’s most feared man – Napoleon. He died there, too. Today, it’s a fascinating British Overseas Territory accessed thanks to the St. Helena Airport.

In this video, we’ll explore the flight’s route, the passenger experience, and even peak behind the scenes at the St. Helena Airport to understand how it all works.

Here’s a link to the unedited take-off and landing footage:

Where is St Helena Island Island. One of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world

Where is St Helena Island. We are often asked this question and love telling the story. So we decided to make a short video showing where St Helena is, how to get there and why you want to go.

If you would like to find out more about St Helena, please subscribe to your channel as we have loads more for you to enjoy!

Measuring just 47 square miles or just 10 x 5 miles wide, it's located a little more than 1,200 miles from the coast of Africa, and 2 and half thousand miles from the South America. Home to around only 4-5 thousand friendly souls. With an estimated 20,000 or so Saints around the world. Saints is what people who come from St Helena are called. And that’s why we call yourselves The Saint Cooks.

We’re British citizens. As St Helena is one of the 14 British overseas territories around the world. It has been under British rule since 1658, having been discovered in 1502 by Joan da Nova for the portugese. He named the Island after Helena of Constaintinople.

Since 2017 you can now fly. From either Johannesburg or Cape Town in South Africa. It’s a morning flight taking around 6 hours to the Island, with a quick refuelling stop at Walvis Bay in Namibia. And then its a 4 hour return flight back to South Africa. Typically flights are every Saturday, and sometimes on Tuesdays depending on the travel season.

On St Helena You can go and visit the oldest, living land animal in the world!
Jonathan the tortoise! Who is officially he is 186 years old.

St Helena is probably best known because the french emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. He was exiled there after losting the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He died on the Island in 1821. By all accounts he didn’t enjoy his time as a prisoner on the Island. The houses where he stayed at the Briars and Longwood are now excellent museums which you can visit. You can also visit Napoleon’s grave in Sane’s Valley, a spot he picked myself.

Some other fascinating things about St Helena are. It has one the most expensive coffee’s anywhere in the world. Can see unique tropical scenery unlike anywhere else. Lush and stunning on the inside. And wonderfully rocky on the edges.

It is renowned for its friendliness. We Saints are very friendly and welcoming. And we like to feed you!

Thanks for watching!

The JEWEL of the SOUTH ATLANTIC, St. Helena! - Outside Watch Vlog #24

We're back!!! We know it's been awhile since our last video but over the last couple of months we have had some big life changes (more on that in future videos) and really didn't have the time to edit. But, thats changing again and now we will be back to our regular bi-weekly videos! We still have so much amazing footage to edit and share.

In this video we finally get onshore in St Helena after a few days in quarantine and explore this unique gem of an Island. St Helena is a truly magical place with breathtaking scenery anywhere you look. We also decide to alter our sailing plans while here. Our original plan was to sail from St Helena to Angra Dos Reis in Brazil but challenging weather during the summer months had us change our minds and set our sights somewhere further north up the coast.

Thanks for watching!

BRUCE MCNICOL, Development Direct, Mantis:
This brings us to St Helena, probably Mantis’ most challenging project to date and one of the development flagship projects. Being remotely situated 2000 nautical miles from Cape Town had its own challenges. Again drawing from the expertise of our team. We had to put in highly experienced project manager from Mantis, Graham Vass. We had a really good construction company that we had sourced from Cape Town. With a professional team pretty much being situated and located in South Africa. We didn't have much hours on the site except for the team. And a lot of that work was done by correspondence, emails, Zoom calls, which had its own challenges. However, no matter what Mantis had to continue with the project. And there was quite a lot to it. We had to develop all thirty rooms fitted out. We had to ship all components from South Africa, from Cape Town. Maurette obviously involved in the interiors, we had Sascon involved in the IT. We had to ship out kitchens, all the utensils. There was quite a lot to that project, shipping, the logistics. You know, that has its set of challenges with the Royal Mail ship RMS St Helena. Maurette, we discussed that it was quite a challenge from that point of view.

MAURETTE VAN EYSSEN, Head of Interior Design, Mantis & MI Designs
2016 was probably one of the most fascinating years because apart from the challenges, it was also the excitement. And in the back of my mind, I knew that I'd be able to see the island eventually once the stuff arrives there. So, most of the manufacturing was done in Port Elizabeth, locally. Everything was packed, crated and shipped from South Africa. We first had to get it to Cape Town, which meant that we had to track it from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town. Once we got to Cape Town, obviously the containers got loaded and I think I had a total of eleven containers, plus a very small installation team consisting of myself, my husband and two assistants. And that was when the fun and the journey started when the ship sailed out of Cape Town.

St Helena Island Carnival 2020

The biennial Carnival through the streets of Jamestown, St Helena, organised as a fund-raising event for the Cancer Support & Awareness charity.
This Carnival was remarkable in that it was held on 31 October, 2020, while the world was still struggling to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic, however, St Helena had been fortunate to remain one of the very few places with a Covid-free status, thus allowing this large gathering to take place.
Note the nine ladies leading the Carnival are 9 of the 12 who took part in Miss St Helena, one week earlier, including the winner, Latisha Fowler.

The Lonely St. Helena Island and the Lighthouse Keepers That Keep It Alive - Michigan

Poppins and I travel to the Straits of Mackinac in Northern Michigan to visit a lonely island called St. Helena. The island was home to the St. Helena Fishing Station and St. Helena Lighthouse.

The St. Helena Lighthouse has been completely restored over the past few decades by a dedicated group of volunteers and Scouts. The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association have been responsible for the restoration and they have done a superb job.

We explore the history of the island and the challenges of keeping a 150 year old lighthouse preserved and working.
