Polar Bears in the Arctic

Polar bears roam the Arctic in search of food, spending most of their lives in solitude. Playful kings of the Polar Region? Or the world’s deadliest predators? Fully grown male polar bears can weigh up to 800 kilograms—as much as a small car. These majestic mammals spend half of their lives hunting in the Arctic for food, both on land and in water. Polar bears' noses are always twitching; they can smell prey from up to a kilometre away. But seals, ever vigilant, have grown to be wary of the Arctic's most ferocious predators. Fluffy polar bear cubs populate the Artic and mum patiently teaches her children everything she knows. But, as time marches on, so too do our polar bears. Off to roam the Arctic ice in search of horizons new.

The Polar Bear Whisperer

Some call Andy MacPherson, The Polar Bear Whisperer. He doesn't disavow the title, but admits he can't really Dolittle with the bears; rather he has come up with techniques to keep them off balance. Polar bears are intelligent, curious, and socially complex, he says, though there are several instinctive responses to humans approaching, and each bear has his own contextual personality and reaction. If she deems approaching vehicles, or a walking group, threatening, she might turn and run. Or she might charge. But once a response kicks-in, it is near impossible to stop. So, if kept disoriented, Andy postulates, she won't decide on an action, but will wait for more information.

Polar Bears Of The Canadian Arctic SD

min Polar bears are the world's largest land predator, with mature males often weighing in at 1200 to 1500 pounds. They typically live an average of 15 - 18 years, with starvation being the major cause of death. Today, the major threat to the polar bear is global warming. Arctic ice is receding at an alarming rate, reducing the hunting season.

polar bears & polar night ????| Svalbard

Polar Bear is hunting a seal! FULL video! Watch the attack! Real-life nature documentary! The Arctic

Watch in this free wildlife documentary a polar mum leaving her two cubs behind, for the time being, to go after a seal. This is a real video of a real polar bear attack! In this video, which is part of my project, Before It Is All Gone, you can follow the whole hunt, from the beginning to the end. You can see as the polar bear walks away from the cubs, which are waiting from a safe distance, not to scare the prey seal away. Incredible, real, amateur nature documentary of a polar bear attack. What could be better???

Then the adult polar bear slowly and carefully approaches the seal. You can see as she freezes in motion multiple times and smells in the air. In some cases, it even looks as if she is looking at us, even though we were miles away literally when all of this went down.

Then the polar bear sneaks up on the seal, you can see her right behind the prey. And then the craziest thing happens: the polar bear slowly slides into the water and completely disappears. In some moments we could see its head peaking out for a second only.

Then nothing happens for about fifteen minutes (I did cut out the extensive wait), we were all waiting super stressed and as tense as one can get. And then...

The polar bear attacked. With all the power and speed she jumped out of the water, up to the ice, and reached out for the seal. She missed her prey by inches only, it really was so close. But the seal did get away in the end, and the momma polar bear got out of the water. It dried its fur on the way back to her cubs. Later on, we saw her approaching another seal, but it got away before the real hunt could have started. I am hopeful that she got to catch prey that day and feed herself and her cubs.

This is a video, which is part of my free wildlife documentary project Before It Is All Gone. The aim of Before It Is All Gone is to share the unique animal species and amazing wildlife habitats (which I have the luck to visit regularly) with the widest audience possible. I hope you will enjoy this high-definition free wildlife documentary. If you do so, please don't forget to subscribe to the channel, and watch my other wildlife videos as well from all around the world.

Everything was recorded in 4K quality, to get the best possible quality wildlife experience for you.

Meet Niels - he is from one of the world's most isolated towns (Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland). He grew up alongside polar bears and massive glaciers inside the largest national park and fjord system on earth. He knows all 350 residents in his town by name and the closest city is thousands of kilometers away.

Despite traveling and studying overseas, he chooses to remain back home because he loves his hometown. That's very admirable!

It was a pleasure spending the day with Niels in one of the most fascinating places I've ever been. I hope to go back again another in the wintertime!

The Town With More Polar Bears than People

Churchill, Manitoba is a small Canadian town with problems unlike any other. They've had to adapt to the hundreds of polar bears that wander through every year. Now climate change is threatening polar bear populations and Churchill's way of life. However, it might also bring with it some uncomfortable new economic opportunities.

A day in the life of a Swiss polar researcher

Some years ago Swiss researcher Sébastien Barrault decided to leave his home country and move to the Norwegian Islands of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. In the freezing temperatures and with an ever-present threat from polar bears he carries out studies on the ice.¶
