Backpacking Havasupai, Arizona - All the waterfalls

Backpacking Havasupai, Arizona - All the waterfalls

I always wonder if anyone reads these descriptions. I sure don't. But I love typing stuff so much, I'll do it anyway. Plus algorithm and all that.

Havasupai is an amazing place. It has waterfalls. Lots of waterfalls. And teal blue water. And super hard to get permits. But I got permits anyway. Because that's what I do. Oh wait. I screwed up. I was supposed to get two permits so I could hike it with my wife. But instead, I only got one. So I backpacked it solo. Tina wasn't too upset since it's not fun hiking out of this place.

Anyway, the hike to Havasupai is fairly straightforward. Except that a lot of people underestimate it and regret it. It's maybe 11 miles and 2,000(ish) feet of elevation loss. Yeah, you can take a helicopter in (when they're running) and you can have the mules/horses carry in your pack. But that's no fun. So I carried all my stuff in.

Around 9 miles, you come to Supai villiage. It's another 2 miles to the campground, but you can restock at the store or eat at the cafe before continuing on. On the way to the campground, you first pass Fifty Foot Falls. Shortly downstream you will come to Navajo Falls. Both are beautiful, but it's not until just before the campground that you really get a taste for what you're in for. Shortly after crossing a bridge and seeing some Navajo taco stands, you'll come upon Havasu Falls. Havasu Falls is a 98 foot waterfall. And it is impressive. Here is where I usually forget about the crowds and how tired I am and just stand there in awe. Havasu Falls is a sight to behold.

But that's only the start of it. Right after Havasu Falls, you come to the campground. I want to say it's about a mile long. Here you look for a decent spot (first come first served.) Set down your gear and continue on. At the end of the campground is my favorite spot; Mooney Falls. Mooney Falls is impressive for a couple of reasons. First, it's the tallest falls in Havasupai. Second, the pathway to the bottom of Mooney Falls is sketchy. Very sketchy. The path proceeds down an impossibly steep cliff face, through two tunnels and then what appears to be a dead end. But here you pick up the ladders and chains to proceed on. On my first descent, I was going down with someone I met on the path. He looked at the chains and turned around. I've seen quite a few people do that. It's slick with spray from Mooney Falls, steep and...less than ADA compliant.

But if you make it to the bottom, it's worth it. Mooney Falls from the base is incredible.

And there's more. Continue downstream another 2 or 3 miles and you come to the last set of waterfalls; Beaver Falls. And the hike between Mooney and Beaver in itself is incredible. Plenty of swimming holes, small waterfalls and if you're lucky some big horned sheep.

For the really adventurous, you can continue downstream from Beaver Falls all the way to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. This is called the Confluence, where the teal blue water of Havasu Creek meets the Colorado River. (I didn't do this on this trip, but I have been before.)

And that's about it, if that weren't enough. On this particular trip, I wanted to take a helicopter out. It's not that I couldn't carry my stuff and hike out myself; it's an $80 (or so) cost to take a helicopter out of the Grand Canyon. Which is money well spent, even if just for the helicopter ride.

Unfortunately, someone heard that you were supposed to meet in front of the lodge for the helicopter. That is incorrect. You wait by the helicopter pad. Someone figured that out after a ton of us had waited in the wrong spot for hours. Instead of forming an orderly line, chaos ensued and everyone started shoving and arguing.

This isn't why I go into the wilderness, so I grabbed my backpack and hiked my way out. A slight annoyance on an otherwise incredible trip.

Havasupai Falls Reopens // 4K // Spring 2023

Havasupai Falls reopened in the spring of 2023, after a three-year Covid closure.
A flash flood turned Havasu Creek's famous blue waters muddy brown for a week in March, and left longer-term damage to the trails.

You can find much more on the waterfalls, the permits, and the 11-mile hike in to Havasupai Falls here:

The Havasupai Tribe puts strict limits on permits. People visiting in 2023 are either on the permits they bought three years ago, or are buying transferred permits from people who are canceling their trips.

Havasupai Falls - A Journey to Wonderland

A once-in-a-life experience to the mysterious Havasupai Falls deep in Grand Canyon.

We had a big group of 20 hiked down and spent 3 days there. The camping permit was extremely hard to get but the beauty of Havasupai worth every effort you made for it.

The Havasupai Falls Hike: From the Permits to Havasu Falls

Before you set your eyes on Havasu Falls and the other waterfalls along Havasu Creek on the Havasupai Reservation, you'll need to hike 11 miles through the desert.
Before you set off on your hike, you'll need to buy a permit from the Havasupai Tribe.

For a complete guide to the Havasu Falls hike, check out:

04:30 Wrap: The best time to visit Havasupai

At the Hualapai Hilltop parking lot, you'll find an office and an outhouse, but no water and a very weak cell signal.
It's 11 miles from the Havasupai Trailhead to the campground.
It's 8 miles to the village of Supai.

The Havasupai Tribe maintains the long series of switchbacks you'll use to hike down into the canyon.
Along the way, you'll pass mule trains carrying supplies and hikers' luggage. For $400, you can reserve a mule to carry your gear. Reservations have to be made when you initially get your permit.
The Havasupai helicopter is never a guarantee, and you cannot reserve it.
It only flies certain days of the week, and you have to sign up and wait for your name to be called.

At the end of the trail, Havasu Falls appears and is the perfect welcome to the Havasupai Campground!

Havasupai Falls - Backpacking to incredible waterfalls in Arizona

Havasupai Falls - Backpacking to incredible waterfalls in Arizona

Yes, I backpacked Havasupai earlier this year. And I did it solo. There’s a reason. If you’ve ever tried to get Havasupai permits, you know that it’s pretty hectic when they’re available online. You have to act fast. I may have acted a little too fast and accidentally bought a single permit. The idea was that Tina and I would hike it, but since I only got one permit, I ended up going solo. But I kept trying, and eventually got permits for two people.

So we backpacked it again. The hike in was pleasant, but enough to wear you out. We spent the rest of the day near camp and checked out Havasu Falls. The following day our alarm went off at 5:30 AM. The plan was to hike about 16 miles to the bottom of the Grand Canyon to check out the confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River. But I was really comfy in that sleeping bag and hiking that far wasn’t very appealing at 5:30. So I hit snooze. Until 8:30. This guaranteed that we didn’t have time to make it to the confluence, which seemed like a win-win at the time.

Instead, we opted to hike to Beaver Falls, and that was just fine with me. The hike to Beaver Falls from the campground is more like 3 miles each way and every step of that is beautiful. It starts with the descent down a steep cliff face to the base of Mooney Falls. This descent freaks out a bunch of people, but I personally love it because my judgment is highly suspect. Anyway, we got to the bottom and decided to keep walking and check out Mooney Falls on the way back.

The hike to Beaver Falls was great. We even got to see some big horn sheep on the way in and back. When we got to Beaver Falls it was a bit of a circus since we’d slept in. But that’s what you get. I ended up swimming up to the ‘cave’ at the upper portion of the falls which was worth it but very cold. At least I can finally say I did it.

And then it was time to head back to camp. We checked out Mooney Falls and then headed to the top of Havasu Falls to the Navajo Taco stand. I don’t know if you’ve ever had a hot, freshly made meal after a few days in the wilderness, but if you haven’t, trust me, you’ll appreciate whatever you get. So take this with that in mind when I say these were the best Navajo Tacos I’ve ever eaten.

Then it was back to camp to relax for the rest of the evening. The next morning we got up at 3:30AM and headed to the village. I don’t recommend waking up that early unless you are highly motivated for something; in this case, we were after the first spot in line for the helicopter. Now if you’re reading this and thinking “Why did this loser take a helicopter instead of hiking”, then I’d assume you haven’t ever taken that particular helicopter. I’ve made the hike a couple times and really prefer the helicopter. I mean, where else can you get a helicopter ride out of the Grand Canyon for $100 and be back at your car in 5~10 minutes after an adventure like Havasupai? Now that I write that, it sounds kinda dumb since Havauspai is obviously the only place you can take a helicopter out of Havasupai. But then again, you’re the one that was criticizing my choice to take a helicopter, so keep your opinions to yourself….

We’ll ignore the fact that I just got into an argument with myself there and just agree that helicopter rides are awesome.

So that’s Havasupai. Again. This time with 100% more helicopter rides.

Havasupai - Everything you need to know

Well, this video was years in the making. And it's a beast. I scrubbed through about 8 hours of footage I filmed during four separate trips to Havasupai to create the ultimate guide to Havasupai. I know this place is a draw for people all over the world and there are lots and lots of questions. Hopefully this resource makes planning your trip easier.

DISCLAIMER: There is a TON of information, so although I did my best, I'm sure I missed something. I may even be wrong on a couple things. And they are CONSTANTLY changing the rules and other specifics. So as a disclaimer, you should always consult the Havasupai Tribe for the official rules and regulations. They're in charge. You're responsible for yourself and I'm just some random dude on the internet. Hiking is dangerous. The wilderness is full of wild animals and unpredictable weather and all that stuff. So....yeah. Don't blame me.

Anyway, here are some resources and other info. I know it seems like a lot, but it's absolutely worth it. Good luck getting permits and have a safe trip.

After passing the ranger station at the entrance of the Havasupai Campground, keep walking. The campground is more than half-a-mile long. You'll be able to find the perfect spot next to the creek.

Services are limited. There are a few composting toilets, and a spring for water. There's no electricity, and no cell service.

In the afternoons, a family sets up a fry bread stand on the trail above Havasu Falls.
The menu changes, but usually includes cold drinks and a few food options.
Indian tacos are a welcome change from the freeze-dried meals you’ll be eating at your tent!

At the ranger station, you’ll find things people have left behind, which you can buy. Some of it is trash, but some is useful. The inventory changes as hikers leave things behind.

Havasupai Falls, Arizona - Hiking Back To The Hilltop | 4K | PT. 3 of 3

Havasupai Falls, Arizona was where we witnessed some of the best waterfalls in the world! Now we are hiking back to the hilltop. See our adventure in the video here:

We woke up around 2:30am and packed up all of our gear. We dropped off our bags and headed our from the Havasupai Campground around 3:30am. We first encountered Havasu Falls, which we said our goodbyes for now. Then we crossed a bridge looking down at the beautiful Havasu Creek / Colorado River. As we walk we see the glowing eyes of what we believe to be a fox as well as incredible stars in the sky. We then arrive in the Supai Village for a quick break. At around 4:30am, people are already there in line for the helicopter. We make it into the canyon, which is part of the Grand Canyon around 5:16am. Our progress goes really well as we race to beat the sunrise. Around 7:50am, we see a sign to turn up towards the hilltop. This is when we encounter our our first sun for the day. Soon after we turn, we see the initial pack of mules with three Supai tribe members. We then make the grueling climb up to the Hilltop. Overall, we had such an amazing time visiting the Havasupai waterfalls. This is part 3, be sure to see the first 2 parts of this series as well.

Havasupai Hike: The Confluence // Havasu Creek Meets the Colorado River

Havasu Creek, which flows through the Havasupai Reservation, is one of the biggest tributaries to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.
The hike to the confluence is a full-day trip from the Havasupai Campground, and nearly an 18-mile round trip!

⏱ Video Timeline ⏱
00:00 Intro to the Confluence
00:24: Havasupai Campground
00:30 Descent Down Mooney Falls
00:57 Havasu Creek Crossings
01:10 Beaver Falls
01:26 Trail Directions to the Confluence
02:15 Crossing from Havasupai into Grand Canyon National Park
02:31 The Confluence at the Colorado River
02:39 Rafters in the Colorado River
02:46 Swimming at the Confluence
02:56 Flannelmouth Suckers
03:12 Desert big-horn sheep
03:24 Permits for Havasupai Falls

Full details on a hike to the confluence can be found here:

To get to the confluence, you first have to scale the 200-foot rock wall down the side of Mooney Falls. This challenge is why many people never even think about making the hike to the confluence.

You’ll rely on a series of tunnels blasted through the rocks, and then chains anchored into the rocks to scale the rock wall.
Wooden ladders will help you in the final part of the descent to the base of Mooney Falls, which is the biggest waterfall along Havasu Creek.

You’ll have to cross the creek seven times on the hike to the confluence.
Some people wear water shoes, and change at each crossing.
Others hike the whole way in sandals.

Three miles in, you’ll come across Beaver Falls. The advice is: leave Beaver Falls for the confluence no later than 10:30 in the morning.
You still have around six miles of hiking to go.

You’ll see the canyon walls grow steeper, and you’ll cross from the Havasupai Reservation into the Grand Canyon National Park.
At the confluence, it's almost mesmerizing to look down and see the clear water of Havasu Creek mix with the muddy water of the Colorado River.

The rafters tied up here are eight-days into their trip down the Colorado River, from Page, Arizona.
You’ll also see people swimming near the confluence, but avoid it if the water level is over your head. You definitely don’t want to be swept out into the river.

If you look closely, you’ll see big fish in the water. These are flannelmouth suckers, which swim upstream to spawn in the spring.

You can’t spend too much time at the confluence, because you have a long hike back ahead of you! As the sun sets below the canyon walls on the hike back, you’re likely to see desert big-horned sheep come down from their cliffs in the evening for dinner along the trail.

It's a beautiful hike to the confluence from the Havasupai Campground, but your group will have to decide whether it's worth an entire day of your trip! Hopefully this video helps with that decision!

Havasupai Falls, Arizona - How To Hike There! | 4K | PT. 1 of 3

Havasupai Falls in Arizona was such an adventure for us to hike there!
See the video here:

We secured our camping permit with the Havasupai Tribe back in February. In mid August, we set off on our journey not knowing if we could make the challenge to hike 10 miles through the desert in one of the hottest months of the year. We stayed at the Hualapai Lodge in Peach Springs, Arizona, which is the closest hotel to the Havasupai Trailhead. Trains at night made sleep very difficult but waking up at 2am much easier. We then drive a little over an hour to the trailhead. The hotel staff warned of to be on the lookout for elk and other cattle on the road in these early hours. This proved to be a great warning as we saw quite a bit of wildlife on our drive. We the arrived at the trailhead. Several other hikers were already there preparing to set out. We quickly prepared and weighed our gear and water and began our hike at around 4:30am. We made it down the steepest part of the hike in about 30 minutes. The canyon views we're spectacular here. We realized that we were hiking into the Grand Canyon to the most remote community in the United States. After about an hour, the sun was out but we made it into the canyon trail to keep cool. We tried to keep a quick pace in a race to beat the heat. We stopped at 4 miles to eat food, rest and refuel. Then we continued onto our journey. We continued to see unbelievable beauty in this canyon. Soon we saw the mules (or horses) trekking gear and supplies out along with members of the Havasupai Tribe. We soon made it to Supai Village. About two miles later, we arrived at the spectacular Havasupai Falls!
