NYC HISTORY - RIDGEWOOD GROVE ARENA QUEENS

The site of the former Ridgewood Grove Arena in Queens is our NYC History tour today. We detail the story of the arena from the 1920s when it was a boxing and wrestling hall, which then became a supermarket, before returning to its origin of boxing and wrestling from 1982 to around 1985.

Many of the wrestling stars of the 1980s appeared at this arena, and along with the ones mentioned in the video such as Andre The Giant, other stars who appeared here included Ivan Putski, Greg Valentine, The Wild Samoans, Big John Studd along with many other famous WWE wrestlers from the 1980s, far too many to mention in this short video.

At the end of the video I also give you a quick run down of the elevated railway that you see me walking under. It is over 130 years old!!

Today, Ridgewood's land area lies within Queens County. However, its political boundary with Brooklyn causes confusion and debate about where the western boundary of Ridgewood truly lies and whether part of Ridgewood is considered to be actually part of Brooklyn. The political dispute dates to the 17th century, when Newtown was under English rule and Boswijck was under Dutch rule. Disputes over the boundary between the two settlements continued until 1769, when a boundary line was drawn through what later became known as the Arbitration Rock. The street grid plan in Ridgewood and Bushwick was laid out in the late 19th century. Because the Arbitration Rock lay along a diagonal with this grid plan, numerous houses were built on the Brooklyn-Queens boundary, their owners sometimes subject to taxes from both counties. During the 19th century, this resulted in situations where some houses received water and fire protection from what was then the city of Brooklyn, while their neighbors in Queens had to rely on volunteer firefighting squads and paid exorbitant water bills to private utilities in Elmhurst.

In 1925, the political boundary was adapted to the street grid, resulting in a zig-zag pattern. The change resulted in 2,543 persons' addresses being reassigned from Queens to Brooklyn, and 135 persons' addresses reassigned from Brooklyn to Queens. Modern addresses in the two boroughs can be distinguished by the presence or absence of a hyphen in the house number. Queens's house numbering system uses a hyphen between the closest cross-street (which comes before the hyphen) and the actual address (which comes after the hyphen). While buildings fronting on streets that are west of Forest Avenue and the Bay Ridge Branch follow the Queens address numbering system, the avenues which run parallel to the county line—bounded by Metropolitan Avenue to the north, Forest Avenue to the east, and the Brooklyn border to the south—do not follow this address numbering system. Streets in this area that run perpendicular to the county line are demarcated by a jump in numbering sequence between the two boroughs.

The New York City Subway's BMT Myrtle Avenue Line (M train) runs through the heart of Ridgewood with stops at Seneca Avenue, Forest Avenue, and Fresh Pond Road. Additionally, the Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues station, in the southern portion of Ridgewood, is a transportation hub serving the Myrtle Avenue Line, the BMT Canarsie Line (L train), and several buses. At the end of the Myrtle Avenue Line is the Fresh Pond Yard, a storage yard for the M train. Halsey Street (L train) has entrances in both Ridgewood and Bushwick.

The Ridgewood Terminal at the Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues station serves New York City Bus' B13, B26, B52, B54, Q55 and Q58 lines. The B20, B38, Q38, Q39, Q54 and Q67 bus lines also serve Ridgewood. In addition, the neighborhood is home to the large Fresh Pond Bus Depot, which services many of the buses that run throughout Brooklyn and Queens.

The Ridgewood Park baseball ground, built on land owned by William Wallace, was part of a larger entertainment area bounded by Wyckoff Avenue, Covert Street, Halsey Street, and Irving Avenue. From 1886 to 1889, it was home to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms (later the Brooklyn Dodgers and now the Los Angeles Dodgers) for their Sunday games. The property continued to operate until 1959. Another similarly named site, called Grauer's Ridgewood Park, was located between Myrtle Avenue, Cypress Avenue, Seneca Avenue, and Decatur Street, and was used mainly as a picnic site.

Mafera Park, named after former Queens borough president Joseph F. Mafera, is located south of the Fresh Pond Junction, between the Myrtle Avenue elevated line to the west and the Bay Ridge Branch to the east.

Lost and Found Tours Ghosts in the Villages Preview

The East, West, and Greenwich Villages have been the favored neighborhoods for counter-culturalists, artists, delinquents, and partiers for centuries, and many of them have never left. Now considered the most haunted area of New York City, the Villages host ghosts as famous as Dylan Thomas and Harry Houdini, to history bigwigs like peg-legged Peter Stuyvesent and Aaron Burr, to everyone in between who met their deaths in gruesome murders, suicides, or out of loneliness. Touching on New York's history from the 1600s to the 1980s, these spooky stories will make you never look at these places the same way again, especially Washington Square Park.

Osgood Damm Theatre

info@HistoryInYourOwnBackyard.com
812-623-5727

The story of the Damm Theatre begins with its name sake, Louis Damm. Louis was only fifteen years old when he came to America in 1868. After settling in Cincinnati to live with relatives, he worked in a bakery earning $1 per week. Eventually Louis saved enough money to purchase his own bakery, and he soon after married Kathryn Vetter. For nine years Louis and his wife ran their bakery business in Cincinnati until they moved to Osgood in 1902 to open a new bakery.

Business in Osgood was good, yet Louis was enterprising. In 1914, he built a modern movie house next door to his bakery, which opened in October with the silent feature film Big Jim of the Sierras. Like many theaters in the early days of film, the Damm Theatre also hosted vaudeville and local amateur acts along with its major motion pictures. Remarkably, the Damm Theatre’s versatility allowed it to compete with other movie houses in larger cities.

In 1922 Osgood’s first movie theater, the Columbia Theatre , owned by local retired businessmen Richard Beer and Gottlieb Herman, was sold to Louis Damm. Soon after, Louis moved his theater into the new location across the street, and renamed the Columbia Theatre the Damm Theatre. As the sole movie house in Osgood, Louis decided to expand the number of days for showing films from one (Tuesdays) to five (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday). In addition to providing Ripley County with its largest auditorium, the new Damm Theatre location also included a large dance hall on the second floor. The approximately 400-seat theater could hold one-third of the town’s population. When popular movies played there, it regularly did.

The “new” Damm Theatre’s exterior architectural style is considered Nineteenth-Century Functional. As part of a city block, rather than a stand-alone structure, the theater’s exterior, though simple, reflects the original architectural look of the block and blends in harmoniously with the neighboring businesses. Its interior design is not one specific style, but is similar to other movie theaters of the past. The theater still maintains many original elements, such as its molded tin ceilings, cast-iron seats with original red velvet upholstery, wall sconces, and a maple hardwood dance floor upstairs. Moreover, individual pieces have also survived, including rare projection equipment, film memorabilia, and other historic items. At one time a piano-console Wurlitzer player organ was installed in the front of the theater to be used for silent films; however, the organ was repossessed during the Depression by the local Wurlitzer agent in Rising Sun, Indiana. The area has since been filled in with cement. The second floor dance hall also once housed a Wurlitzer orchestrion that provided dance music.

The Damm Theatre operated for thirty-nine years as a family operation, run by the five children of Louis Damm, until 1953, when Joe Damm purchased controlling interest in the business from his family. Business thrived into the 1960s, as the theater was open six days per week, and sometimes showed as many as three different films in a single week. When Joe Damm died in 1973, his wife Viola continued to operate the theater with the help of her son, Robert.

Image Courtesy Bob Damm However, times had changed by the 1960s. Decreased railway traffic meant fewer visitors to Osgood. Additionally, the advent of television caused declining theater attendances nationwide. Both factors severely limited business for the Damm Theatre, to the point of cutting back its hours of operation from six days to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday by the mid-1980s. Nevertheless, Viola devoted herself to running a family-friendly theater that was clean and affordable. With Viola’s death in 1989, however, the Damm Theatre was forced to cease continuous operation for the first time since it opened in 1922, thus shutting down the only cinema in town.

Globe Cemetery | Globe, Arizona | Seeking Out the Graves of Pioneers

With Halloween on our minds, an old video creeps out of the vault to offer some spooky seasonal atmosphere. Today we visit the historic old Globe Cemetery & cover what this location is like as well as visit some of the notable residents.

Check out our site for more!
⚪ Read our review -
⚪ Get more information -

We were recently in Globe, Arizona filming the old Indian ruins of Besh-Ba-Gowah for a video. As we were nearing the end of our visit, we asked the employee at the desk of the Visitor Center for recommendations of other historic sites in the area. One location she suggested was the Historic Globe Cemetery. Having seen an advertisement earlier with photos of notable burials, this sounded perfect for a rare cool and cloudy Arizona day!

Cemeteries can certainly be deemed strange places to go for tourism, however, they also can be quiet, peaceful and in cases like these, they hold a lot of history. Due to this cemetery, I've learned a lot more about the history of the Globe-Miami area and a few figures how shaped its past.

The first known burial is that of Thomas B. Hammond in 1876. His grave simply says murdered by Apaches. The story goes that he and his brother set off to prospect silver and gold that had been found in the area. While away on a trip with a group, Thomas's camp was raided by Apache and he was murdered. Doc Hammond, Thomas's brother, claimed his brother's body and buried him in the hillside that became Globe Cemetery,

Al Sieber is another buried in the Globe Cemetery. A civil war veteran, Sieber served as Chief of Scouts for the US Army during the Apache Wars of the late 1800s. He was highly regarded by many and even had tied to Josephine Earp. After a number of Yuma-Apaches escaped a reservation, he escorted Wyatt Earp's soon to be common law wife to a ranch house where her and her party would be safe.

Other areas of interest include the graves of several Buffalo Soldiers, a memorial to early Chinese residents of Globe, Judge Aaron Hackney (a frontier newspaperman who founded Globe's famed Arizona Silver Belt paper), Robert S Knowles (a fellow scout for Al Sieber) and the Sheriffs John Henry Rimrock Henry Thompson and Glenn Reynolds.

There is no shortage of stories one can find at Globe Cemetery. Expect to spend a decent amount of time if you want to explore more than the marked historic locations. There are roads winding through the cemetery, however they are not paved and can be quite bumpy. If you are a history buff and this is your kind of thing, Globe Cemetery is a goldmine of a location.
