Grand Canyon In Depth - More Than A View

Grand Canyon National Park is bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island.
The Park comes in at a massive 1,904 square miles, while Rhode Island is around 1,212 square miles. In some places, the canyon itself is over a mile deep and ten miles across.
The Hopi Tribe considers the Grand Canyon a gateway to the afterlife.
The tribe has always placed great spiritual significance on the site. They believe that upon death, a person passes westward through a “place of emergence,” located upstream from the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers in the canyon, on his or her journey to the afterlife.
Temperatures vary greatly within the canyon.
From the rim of the canyon to its lowest point, the temperature can change by more than 25 degrees. The depths of the gorge are notoriously hot during the summer, while the North Rim is often below freezing in winter.
The canyon is full of hidden caves.
There are an estimated 1,000 caves within the canyon, but only 335 have been recorded. Only one cave is open to the public.
In 1909, the canyon was the site of a giant hoax.
The Arizona Gazette reported that archaeologists had discovered traces of an ancient Tibetan or Egyptian civilization in an underground tunnel in the canyon. The Smithsonian denied this entire story, claiming that they had no knowledge of the archaeologists. To this day, conspiracy theorists still believe this may have been a government cover-up.
The Grand Canyon was once home to a booming photo business!
The Kolb brothers discovered that they could make money photographing tourists while they were photographing the canyon for themselves. They would take a photo when the tourists departed on mules and sell them back when the riders returned from their journey. The Kolb Studio is located in Grand Canyon Village.
Despite being the most famous, the Grand Canyon is not actually the world’s deepest canyon.
Depending on how the depth of the gorge is measured, the Arizona landmark actually comes behind the Cotahuasi Canyon in Peru and the Kali Gandaki Gorge in Nepal.
he most dangerous animal in the canyon is actually the rock squirrel!
Even though Gila monsters and bighorn sheep also live there, visitors are most often bitten by this humble squirrel.
The drive from the North Rim Visitor Center to the South Rim Visitor Center is about 200 miles (320km) and takes roughly four hours.
This definitely puts the size of this marvel into perspective!
No one is completely sure about the age of the Grand Canyon.
It was long believed that the Colorado River started carving out the canyon six million years ago, but recent studies have shown this process may have actually started 70 million years ago.
The canyon is full of fossils.

Though none of them are from dinosaurs, since the canyon layers were formed long before dinosaurs walked the earth. It is, however, home to fossils of ancient marine animals that date back 1.2 billion years

More Than A View - Grand Canyon

Bicycling the Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park. in this video we are going to get you prepared to bike Hermit Road on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. We will answer how to rent bikes in the grand canyon. The best biking in the grand canyon. biking the south rim? how to get to hermit's rest? can I bike hermit road? what are the bike trails like at the grand canyon? We'll show the best views from the South Rim of the grand canyon. We look forward to sharing all we know about bicycling Hermit Road from Grand Canyon Village to Hermit’s Rest. So let’s get started. Maps we use today are from the National Park Service. here is a link:

We didn't provide any video actually biking as our script didn't make enough time. So enjoy all the canyon views while you listen!

The focus of this video is Hermit Road and the Hermit Road Greenway Trail. However, The Grand Canyon Greenway has about 13 miles of paved asphalt trails built especially for bikes. Note that on these trails you will find hikers, walkers, and the occasional elk. Bikers must yield to pedestrians as a rule when in the Grand Canyon. The bike trails East of Grand Canyon Village are from the Visitor’s center and Campgrounds out to Kaibab Trail and Yaki Point and also South to Tusayan. The Tusayan trail is nice as parking is located south of the entrance station and people can find stress-free parking at Tusayan and bike into the park.

The best place we found to bike was Hermits road. The road from Bright Angel to Hermits rest is 7 miles one-way and during the busy months is only accessible via shuttle and bicycles. It’s not for everyone as the first hill is brutal for people who aren’t active. However, our 10 year old daughter rode this road well and therefore we would recommend it to anyone who is comfortable biking or choosing to e-bike. If you have littles you might consider taking a rope to tow your child up hills. The viewpoints are fantastic and on bikes you can go at your own pace. Make sure you pull over when shuttles drive by as it is a rule of the park. There are many other hills so expect to bike uphill from Hermits rest for most of the trip back to Bright Angel. We’ll put a link in the description with maps from the National Park Service.

Cycling in Grand Canyon National Park can be a lot of fun. However, the altitude is over 7,000 feet above sea level in some places on the rim. Altitude affects people in different ways so be cautious when biking the rim and drink a lot of water. Hot days can be especially difficult. If you feel shortness of breath or dizziness take frequent breaks and consider shortening your ride and if bad seek medical attention.

Hermit Road connects cyclists to the Hermit Road Greenway Trail. This trail is the exact placement of the original hermit road from 1912. We also saw California condors resting on a dead tree hidden in the woods. As another great bike trail the greenway travels from Monument Creek Vista to Pima Point and ending at Hermits rest, the trail is 2.8 miles one-way. We found this quiet trail to provide a great ride with twists and turns and small hills through pine forest with a handful of overlooks along the way. Hermit’s Rest is the destination at the end of the trail where you can find a souvenir shop with ice cream and other tourist essentials.

Renting bikes and e-bikes at the visitors center through Bright Angel Bicycles seemed to be the most convenient method of rental. We noticed a lot of traffic at the rental shop and they offer bike helmets too. Book Rental Reservations early as they do sell out. They are open 8-5pm in the Summer. We’ll put a link in our description so you can learn more. Continue planning your trip to the Grand Canyon by clicking the Playlist or video now.

In fact, at one point, the canyon was called “a profitless locality” by an early explorer. Find out how the Grand Canyon became one of America’s most visited—and beloved—national parks in this video celebrating its 100th anniversary.
