Golubac, Serbia - Golubac Fortress

Golubac (Голубац) is a small town in eastern Serbia that sits on the right bank of the Danube at its widest point, just before it flows into the Djerdap gorge (eng. The Iron Gates of the Danube). The Iron Gate park is popular for outdoor activities like hunting, hiking, camping and fishing.
Golubac is best-known among tourists for the nearby located Roman archaeological sites, the Iron Gates (part of Derdap National Park), and Golubac Fortress.
The Golubac beach is located at the entrance to this town. The beach is clean, covered with sand and set with umbrellas, thus creating a very pleasant environment.
In addition to enjoyment in nature, you can indulge in enjoyment of food, in the specialties of Golubac restaurants, which offer, above all, local traditional cuisine and fish specialties.
Golubac fortress is one of the best preserved fortified medieval towns in Serbia that is believed to have been built in the late-14th century AD. In historical sources, Golubac is mentioned for the first time in 1335.
As a cultural property of exceptional importance, Golubac Fortress also belongs to the Golubac Nature Reserve, the area surrounding the entrance into the Iron Gate gorge that at the same time represents the entry point into Djerdap National Park.
The fortress is located approx 4 km (2,5 mi) down the river from Golubac and was built in the late-14th century AD. At the castle location, the river has a width of 6,5 km (4 mi). During its history, the Golubac Fortress has repelled 120+ sieges and attacks. It was built as the last frontier and defense, and the view from it of Danube and Djerdap - The Iron Gates is a unique experience.
Golubac fortress has ten towers. The first and the true builder of this fortress gave it nine towers set in front, back and lower town, but Turks added another tower and strengthened the fortress with canon openings. All towers are built in a shape of a square except the donjon tower that has a polygonal base, and the cylindrical top, thus the name Hat Tower.
The Danube River and certain parts of the Djerdap Gorge are a real gem of this area, which is very rich in diverse and quality fish. The whole region is widely known for hunting and fishing, so that these two activities have become a symbol of Golubac and its surroundings.
The rich and long history of the town of Golubac, as well as its medieval fortress are a large and indispensable part of its cultural and historical heritage and significance.
Golubac should be visited, because of the beauty of nature, rocks, forests, the Danube, and then because of the spirit of history that is felt here.

Discover Serbia - The Medieval Golubac Fortress

In Serbian, the town is known as Golubac (Голубац), derived from golub (pigeon or dove) and is therefore often translated as the town of doves. Other names: Romanian: Golubăţ (also known as Golumbacu Mare or Columbacu), Hungarian: Galambóc, German: Taubenberg and Turkish: Güvercinlik meaning dovecote.

Historically, it was known as Columbria in Latin, a contraction of (castrum) Columbaria meaning city of pigeons (Latin: Columba, Greek: kòlymbos), and as a city derived from Cuppae during pre-Roman times.

It was a stronghold called Cuppae during Roman and Early Byzantine times (1-6th century) and turned into a city (Columbria) in 554/5 AD.[3]

Archeological sites include the remnants of one of Roman Emperor Trajan's tables near Trajan's Bridge, found along his road through the Danube's Iron Gates; and the Roman fortress Diana. Golubac fortress, 4 km downstream, is from the 14th century and also of interest. The fortress was the scene of a battle against the Turks in 1428, where the Polish knight Zawisza Czarny was captured and executed by the Turks.

Golubac Fortress (Golubački grad) is medieval fortified town on the south side of the Danube River, 4 km downstream from the small town of Golubac, Serbia. The castle, which was most likely built during the 13th century, is split into three compounds which were built in stages. It has ten towers. It is also unclear whether the Medieval fortress was built by Bulgarians, Serbs or Hungarians.
Golubac Fortress has had a tumultuous history. Prior to its construction it was the site of a Roman settlement (Cuppae). During the Middle Ages, it became the object of many battles, especially between the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary. It changed hands repeatedly, passing between Turks, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Serbs, and Austrians, until 1867, when it was turned over to the Serbian Knez, Mihailo Obrenović III. Now, it is a popular tourist attraction in the region and a sightseeing point on Danube boat tours.

8 Forts @ Danube in Serbia - Golubac Fortress.

Golubac fortress is an imposing medieval fortress on the Danube near Veliko Gradiste.
Position at the entrance to the Iron Gate makes it an extremely attractive. Golubac fortress is one of the most impressive buildings situated on the Danube, which is classified as a cultural and historical monument of great importance. For this beautiful fortress are related various myths and legends, not knowing exactly who built it or when. In progress is the great restoration of Golubac fortress, so its appearance deserves careful attention. It is located on steep cliffs 4 km from Golubovac Town and beautiful Iron Gate and they together make a fascinating tourist complex created by nature and history together. Fortress consists, front, rear and upper town. Its main specificity are nine massive towers that are up to 25m high, and are designed so that the interior of the tower testifies about the places that are reserved for guns and other ammunition of that time.
No one knows exactly who and when they began to build the fortress on Danube, but it was first mentioned in writings dating from the thirteenth century as a Hungarian facility. It is therefore characterized as a medieval fortress building. Golubac fortress has a turbulent history, since there were many battlefields and often envied it and losing the powerful force that led to the wars in this region. Prince Lazar was trying to conquer this building mostly without success, but in the - early fifteenth century, however, it came in the Serbian property. After the death of despot Stefan, the Turks advanced in their conquest in the territory of Hungary, and won the Golubac fortress and kept it in their possession until the early nineteenth century.
There is an interesting legend that explains the name of this fortress on the Danube. According to the folk tale, in the city lived a beautiful girl called Golubana. About her beauty was widely heard, so Turkish pasha wanted her for himself. However, beautiful Golubana did not accept his courtship gestures and persistently refused him. Pasha ordered the Golubana to be fine, so the girl to be tied to a rock above the Danube. Birds mutilated her body, and she died. The memory of her and her beauty and the sad fate of the rest of the people, and the place where she lived, received its name Golubac. There is another legend that says that in the imposing building lived a princess Helena who breed pigeons to alleviate the sadness and loneliness. In 2014 began the reconstruction of this amazing building, and finally is open to visitors in 2019.

The Golubac Fortress (Serbian: Голубачки град or Golubački grad, Hungarian: Galambóc vára, Bulgarian: Гълъбец, Romanian: Cetatea Golubăț, Turkish: Güvercinlik Kalesi) was a medieval fortified town on the south side of the Danube River, 4 km (2.5 mi) downstream from the modern-day town of Golubac, Serbia. According to recent discoveries, the fortress, which was built during the 14th century by Medieval Serbian state, is split into three compounds which were built in stages.[1] It has ten towers, most of which started square, and several of which received many-sided reinforcements with the advent of firearms. Towers were not connected for easier defense. Also inside the fortress were found Serbian Medieval frescos.[1]

Golubac Fortress in Serbia Worth Visiting? Belgrade Travel 2023 | Serbia Roadtrip

Today we drove from Belgrade, Serbia to Golubac Fortress in Eastern Serbia, on the banks of the Danube river. The fortress was a medieval fortified town which has changed hands since the middle ages. It has passed between the Turks, Hungarians, Austrians, Serbians and Bulgarians. It is now a beautiful tourist attraction in Serbia.

It was a windy day but it did not rain fortunately - it had rained almost everyday in our Serbia weeklong trip.
