Sending a GoPro to near space! We (almost) did it! Full Footage

0:00 - Lauch (duh!)
1:20:00 - Best views of Mountains!
1:25:00 - End of Footage and explanation of what happened

This was our first high altitude balloon launch, completed after several months of planning. As you will see, not everything goes to plan the first time. During pre-launch, we realized our calculations were off in regards to how much helium was needed and as a result we needed to drop wright if we wanted to get the package airborne. As a result, we had to eliminate the external battery pack, as well as the second GoPro. This got our payload off the ground, although it was now ascending at a much lower rate than we anticipated. Instead of a 120 minute ascent, we got around a 3.25 hour ascent time, and instead of a maximum altitude of 90,000ish feet, we got to 105,000 (although our GoPro was not able to record it). This meant the package landed a long ways away and it took us a full day to drive out to New Mexico and retrieve it. Overall, this was a great experience and we will be doing It again so stay tuned for more footage!

Balloon with GoPro to Near Space

MAKE SURE TO WATCH IN HD!

High altitude unmanned balloon launch that goes up to near space and back.

Two posts I've made that can answer many of the questions in the comments:
Post on the launch:
Post of How to do your own Balloon Launch:

All designed and launched by myself. All FAA regulations were followed, the FSDO was notified and given all the details, and a NOTAM was even filed with Ft Worth center for balloon activity.

A lot of people asked me why I was doing this. Mostly, I had free time and needed a project/hobby to keep me engaged and secondly, space is neat. Check out the video and see for yourself.

The Coin in the video is from my AFROTC detachment at Purdue University. Go Boilers! Shout out to Purdue Engineering for teaching me how to tackle a project like this.

If you are interested in doing your own balloon project check out this website. It is a great place to start.

Thanks for watching!

Earth From 100,000 Feet: Sending a balloon to space

This is a high altitude balloon launch with a weather balloon in order to send a gopro to near space.

This was our third high altitude balloon launch, and we finally made it to near space with the GoPro and got the footage we were looking for! For more details on how we planned on how to do your own launch see below:

All materials were purchased from High Altitude Science-
We got out 600g weather balloon, our helium tank adapter, and our parachute from them.

The foam cooler, rope, and GoPro, and external battery we got separately. To find a cheap GoPro, look on Ebay. We used a GoPro 5 because it saved money and did exactly what we needed. I also recommend buying an external battery or else the GoPro battery won't last long enough to capture the whole flight.

To calculate how much helium we would need, we again used high altitude sciences' ballon performance calculator:

To predict where our payload would land, we used this HAB trajectory calculator:

We have found this to be very reliable for all of our launches.

GoPro Hero 8: Model Rocket Launch

A little fun during quarantine after #SpaceX and #NASA sent the Dragon Crew astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley into space on the Falcon 9 Rocket for the first American's launched into space on an American rocket in almost ten years. Not quite the stratosphere but we had fun shooting the model rocket! Strapped a #GoPro to the side and let her fly!

Sending a GoPro to Space

For a college project, my team was able to capture a picture of the curvature of the earth by only using a weather balloon & a styrofoam cooler. The ballon reached a maximum altitude of over 90,000 feet.
