Acheron River - Gliki

The Acheron is a river located in the Epirus region of northwest Greece. In ancient times the word Acheron was interpreted as ὁ ἄχεα ῥέων (ho akhea rheōn), meaning the stream of woe, and it was believed to be a branch of the underworld river Styx over which in ancient Greek mythology Charon ferried the newly dead souls across into Hades. The lake called Acherousia and the river still called Acheron with the nearby ruins of the Necromanteion are found near Parga on the mainland opposite Corfu.

The springs of Acheron River is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Acheron River is located 25km from Parga and 44km from Preveza (Greece), in a beautiful surrounding with rich vegetation and crystalline waters which comprise a unique natural landscape. The river springs from the area known by the name of the village Glykí at an altitude of 1.600 metres in the mountains of Soúli and discharges in the area of Ammoudiá on the Ionian coast. The Acheron River is an ecosystem that is recognized and a protected area by the Natura 2000 Network. In Ancient Greek mythology the river Acheron was known as the river of pain and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. According to legend, the souls of the dead were transported to the other side of the river Acheron, towards the god of the underground world Hades, and the goddess Thetis bathed her son Achilles in this river, holding him for heel, giving him immortality. Today, Acheron River is an attraction for tourists, where they can try rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, fishing, but above all where they can enjoy the beautiful nature. Along the river there are several restaurants and cafes. You can use a trip to this river to visit the Nekromanteion, an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the god of the underworld, Hades. In it, the communication with dead souls took part, and visit to the crypts and corridors that led to the underground world can be so exciting.

Wiki writes about the Acheron River, The Acheron (/ˈækərən/; Ancient Greek: Ἀχέρων Acheron or Ἀχερούσιος Acherousios; Greek: Αχέροντας Acherontas) is a river located in the Epirus region of northwest Greece. It is 52 km (32 mi) long, and its drainage area is 705 km2 (272 sq mi). Its source is near the village Zotiko, in the southwestern part of the Ioannina regional unit and it flows into the Ionian Sea in Ammoudia, near Parga.
In ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was known as the river of woe, and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. The word is of uncertain etymology.
In the Homeric poems, the Acheron was described as a river of Hades, into which Cocytus and Phlegethon both flowed.. The Roman poet Virgil called it the principal river of Tartarus, from which the Styx and Cocytus both sprang. The newly dead would be ferried across the Acheron by Charon in order to enter the Underworld..

Acheron River
Steeped in ancient mythology and drenched in natural beauty, the Acheron River is a must-visit on your holiday to Parga. With a source over 50 kilometres from Parga, the river flows into Ionian Sea in Ammoudia.

This little seaside village is less than 20 kilometres away from Parga by road, a journey that takes around 25 minutes. There are a number of places you can head to where you can enjoy the waters of the Acheron River though, and there are tours that take you to some of the best bits.

In ancient Greek mythology, the Acheron was one of the underworld’s five rivers, and it had to be crossed by the newly dead. It was known for its healing properties, where sins could be washed away, rather than as a place of punishment like the Cocytus, which means the ‘river of wailing’.

Try to visit on a warm day, when the refreshing water’s a real treat. It’s not hard to conjure up thoughts of the river’s healing powers as you splash your way through the shallow current. You’ll wade through the crystal clear water surrounded by rocky slopes, steep cliffs, and lush vegetation.

If you have a waterproof camera then you’ll get some great photos to take home with you. Keep your eye out for birds of prey circling above too, as you amble past striking rock formations and pretty waterfalls.

For something a bit different, you can ride a horse through the river, or go rafting instead. After
paddling down rapids, stop for a picnic beside the water as you take in the beautiful scenery. When you return to Parga, head to Sugar Bar and raise a toast to your day at the Acheron River.
