Gates of the Mountains Boat Tour – Mann Gulch Fire of 1949 – near Helena, Montana MT

Gates of the Mountains Boat Tour including the Mann Gulch Fire of 1949 near Helena, Montana.

Join us as we embark on a two hour boat tour of the “Gates of the Rocky Mountains” as first described by Lewis and Clark in their journals during the Corps of Discovery in 1805.

Kyle, our boat captain and tour guide, was both enthusiastically entertaining and informative. Although he was responsible for over 80 people today, he still had time to provide us with two hours of expert narration on the gates, its limestone cliffs, and interesting stories of early explorers, natural wonders and wildlife of the area.

Kyle narrated the tour from memory. I know that his stories could go on for hours. Unfortunately the tour was only two hours long!

If you plan on taking this excellent summer boat tour please be aware the tour boats run on the hour during weekends/holidays and every two hours on weekdays. The older (1950’s vintage) wooden tour boat can be covered in case of rain. I still remember the wooden tour boat we took over 40 years ago in the mid-70’s! You can still see it in operation in a couple of scenes.

Kyle also explained in great detail the incident at Mann Gulch where 13 smokejumpers lost their lives in 1949. The incident is the subject of author Norman Maclean's book Young Men and Fire, the same author who wrote A River Runs through It.

This sequence was captured with a Canon Vixia HFS-100 camera and edited with Adobe Premier Pro 6.

GATES OF THE MOUNTAINS BOAT TOUR | Helena, MT travel vlog

HI GUYS :) okay so the GATES OF THE MOUNTAIN TOUR is one of my favorite excursions/day trips from Helena, Montana. It is natural beauty like you have never seen. This route on the Missouri River was explored and discovered by non other than Meriwether Lewis on his expedition through the area. He himself was the one who named it 'The Gates of the Mountains' in his extensive and incredibly accurate journal entries. This is one of the few places, if not the only, that he could still recognize today, if he was to trace his route.

However, I am not the only one who thinks this place is incredible. Their tour runs three times a day and sells out most days! The tour is 2 hours and there are two boat choices. One is covered, has a restroom onboard and doesn't stop during that time. The other boat is not covered and does not have a restroom. However, they stop at the campsite you see in my video for a few minutes (where there is a restroom you can use). Their website is linked below and I highly recommend booking in advance. Plus, they have tons of info on their website about times, ticket pricing, accessibility, etc.

I hope you guys enjoy the video and please don't forget to like, comment and subscribe! It means the world to me. Plus, if you ever get the chance to visit...you simply must!

Okay, let me know if you'd want to visit in the comments below!

Gates of the Mountains Boat Ride in Montana!

Helena, Montana is where this awesome wilderness boat ride is located! This boat ride follows the path of Lewis and Clark down the river. It was Meriweather Lewis that wrote in his journal about the Gates of the Mountains! On this boat ride, you can still see some landmarks that were described in his journal. It brings history to life. While on the boat ride you learn about the history of the area and see many animals and birds.

The cost of this tour was $16.00 apiece. Brian and I both felt that it was worth so much more. We were so excited to see the goats, a bear, and plenty of eagles while on the boat for an hour. This is a must-see in Helena, Montana!! Be sure to book it in advance because the reservations fill up fast.

Gates of the Mountains

Gates Of The Mountains in 4k Solo Kayak and Climb

This adventure started off with a three mile kayaking trip into The Gates Of the Mountains Wilderness area. On the most part, this area is really only accessible by boat. Once I arrived at Hunters Pointe, the hiking/climbing part of this trip started. It turns out to be a rather dangerous hike, as you ascend up 1200 feet on loose rocks, and limestone cliffs. Because of this, it made it that much more enjoyable, and lots of hygge moments. At the start of this adventure I left from Helena Montana. Helena Montana is not far only a 20 minute drive on interstate 15 to Gates of the Mountain road which is well posted. Helena Montana was a fun place to visit. Once you take Gates of the mountains road it will dead end at the Gates of the mountains boat tours and marina. At the Gates of the mountains boat tours and marina you can put in your boat or in my case my Kayak. If your not as adventurous as I was from Gates of the mountains boat tours and marina you can take a boat tour from them of the gate of the mountains. They have multiple boat tours you can take including a dinner cruise. In these boat tours they describe in detail about the Lewis and Clark expedition of this area. As mentioned in my vlog the Lewis and Clark expedition took place in 1805 and they described the area as the most remarkable cliffs we have seen yet. The Lewis and Clark expedition named this area. They named it gates of the mountains because as you travel by boat you will see the mountains open and close. For myself I would have liked to capture this but could not row fast enough, or I didn't feel like it as it was a three mile kayak trip in. I went on a day that there were no weather concerns so it was an enjoyable kayaking trip. To kayak along these spectacular limestone cliffs was an amazing adventure. The cliffs rise up from waters edge on both sides to an elevation of 1200 feet. I do recommend this as a trip even if it is on a chartered boat. The gates of the mountains wilderness area is part of the 1964 wilderness act. So, there are no roads, buildings, or bicycling in the area. The only access is via boat or hiking in. If you are hiking in this could take a very long time so I recommend boating. Along the way there are a couple of camping spots that you would access via boat on the Missouri river. My journey took me to Hunters point where I left the Missouri river. At hunters point I left my kayak and started my hike or mountain climbing adventure. In this area there are no trails you just make your way through the area bushwhacking. Because of all the bushwhacking I was glad I wore my jeans in the area. In addition I attempted to stay as close as I could to the ridge line of the cliffs as I could which were very steep and loose rocks. As mentioned it is going up 1200 feet and it was about an 80 degree angle to climb. If you are taking this hike or climb I do recommend going this way as you get the most out of the spectacular views of these limestone cliffs and looking down at the Missouri river. The best you can do as I did was to find deer paths and try to follow them as best you can. On this hike I never saw any deer, mountain goats or any large animals but, I am sure they saw myself. I expect carrying my bell on my backpack kept them away. I expect it was also what kept mountain lions and bears away also but, I did have my bear spray with me. Once at the top eagles kept buzzing me as I got a little to close to their nest. I respected them and didn't get to close to the eagles nest. Maybe next time I will sneak up on them and film it who knows. At the top it was amazing views and satisfaction. In fact it was hygge moments or what I like to call hygee act of living in the hygge moment. Once I was done at the top of the Gates of the Mountains wilderness area I started hiking back inward towards the west. I came across a deer trail wit the bones of deer on it so I new I was one to something returning. Hunters Point visit, Hunters Point by boat. Hygge Traveler thanks you for watching. Hygge Traveler property of Hygge Traveler. Previous name Hygee Traveler. Hygee Traveler living the Hygge Lifestyle. Hygee Traveler known as Hygge Lifestyle. Live it Hygge Lifestyle.

Rocky Mountain Passages--Lewis and Clark on the Helena National Forest

The Gates of the Mountains are one of the special places along the Lewis and Clark Trail located on public land.
This segment, managed by the Helena National forest, is open to everyone.
It is a place where people can still travel the route of the Corps of Discovery and can experience a
landscape that looks much as it did when Lewis and Clark treked here.
