GREAT BIRD ISLAND ~ ANCHORAGE ~ ANTIGUA ~ Best UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

This video is of the beautiful anchorage of Great Bird Island. This tiny islet lying almost three kilometers north-east of Antigua. Measuring just 20 acres (81,000 m2), smaller than most city parks, it is the only place on Earth where you can see an Antiguan racer (Alsophis antiguae) in the wild. The entire world population of this snake lives on the island. Named by sailors who were amazed at the number of birds that they found living and nesting there, Great Bird Island is a miniature paradise. As well as being the last refuge of the Antiguan racer, it is also home to a variety of other endangered creatures including the rare lizard Ameiva griswoldi, brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis), West Indian whistling ducks and red-billed tropicbirds (Phaethon aethereus). Luckily for the snake, there are no mongooses on the island, although hundreds of black rats lived there until recently. The island is currently privately owned by an American businessman.

Approach the island in good lighting as the area is maze of shallow reefs.

FORT BERKELEY 1704 ~ English Harbor Antigua ~ Best UAV Drone Caribbean Aerials ~ WeBeYachting.com

Fort Berkeley is over looking English Harbour is the most historic part of Antigua. Time should be taken when visiting Nelson’s Dockyard, to follow the path to Fort Berkeley. It is only a ten-minute stroll each way and the unfolding views of the harbour are spectacular. The fort is placed on the peninsula forming the west entrance to English Harbour. It was started in 1704, or 21 years before the Dockyard was built. Its defences were later extended in the 1740’s. In this strategic position, the fort commanded the entrance to the anchorage, where naval captains careened their ships and sheltered from hurricanes. On approaching the battlements from a footpath starting at the Dockyard dinghy wharf, a stone quarry may be seen on the right. It was here that the building material for the fort was taken. The fortified line, once known as the “Charles Line”, is further to the right. It was named after Commodore Charles Knowles, who once commanded at the Dockyard.  He added this line of battlements in 1745, when the fort was extended. On the left is a bombproof powder magazine, built in 1811 to hold three hundred barrels of gunpowder. Inside the entrance is a cooperage and shifting room for packing explosives. The next building was the guardhouse, for which there is an amusing 18th century reference to this building: “The Guard is in great distress, the allowance of 9 pence a day not being sufficient at such a cold post to buy more than warm liquor”.
In 1989, the building was re-roofed by the National Park as a pilot restoration-training project funded by Canada. The restoration is accurate to the point that the stonework shows smaller stones were used to extend the wall height.  In 1751, the roof had been blown off by a hurricane. Therefore added height to the walls was needed to accommodate extra beams to strengthen the roof against future hurricanes. The restored mechanics of the inside structure demonstrates great strength, and it certainly survived the great hurricane ‘Luis’, experienced in 1995.
At the end of the peninsula is the site of the first 1704 battery. Peeping out of the battlements towards Guadeloupe is a twenty-four pound cannon, cast in Scotland during the reign of George III of England in 1805. Look for the King’s cipher on the top of the cannon and the date will also be seen. The calibre of the gun is 5.5 inches and it weighs twenty-five tons, taking eleven men to handle it. Its range was one and a half miles with an eight pound charge of gunpowder.
Over the wall at the extreme end, is an upturned cannon cemented in the rock. A chain was once attached and extended across the harbour entrance forming a boom to discourage the entry of attacking ships. The chain was lashed to old condemned masts, preventing it from sinking to the bottom of the harbour.
With this gun in the round bastion in which you are now standing, and extending along the lines, were twenty other guns. Fortunately, English Harbour was not attacked so the fort was never used in earnest, though it must have been a deterrent against assault.
On the east side of the Harbour above the 'Pillars of Hercules' (q.v. under Natural Sites) it is just possible to see the walls of a half moon shaped battlement. This is the only remnant of Fort Charlotte built at the same time as Shirley Heights military complex visible high up overlooking English Harbour.
From this walk along the peninsula protecting the western side of English Harbour we can understand how well English Harbour with its vital naval dockyard was defended against attack, an attack that never happened as it was deemed too strong militarily.

BARBUDA ~ Coco Point ~ Robert De Niro ~ Best UAV Drone Caribbean Aerials ~ WeBeYachting.com

Barbuda is an island in the Eastern Caribbean, that forms part of the state of Antigua and Barbuda. It has a population of about 1,638 (at the 2011 Census), most of whom live in the town of Codrington. The island is famous for its beautiful pristine pink coral sand beaches. Low Bay beach is 17 of unbroken miles of pink sand beach. With mysterious abandoned forts, Neolithic caves and beachfront untouched since the days of Christopher Columbus, Barbuda is host to a wild bird sanctuary standing on a mesmerizing lagoon. A liberal scattering of ancient shipwrecks off its shores, Barbuda is both the deepest retreat into solitude you could dream of and almost untouched to the world.

Destinations in this video: Coco Point, Barbuda.

Green Island Antigua

A Sunday morning hike on Green Island, Antigua and Barbuda. Green Island is a small island east of Antigua; which happens to be the private property of Mill Reef Properties ltd. The island is uninhabited by humans and its the home for racer snakes, a few birds, lizards and the ideal breeding ground for sea turtles. Yachts can be found anchored near the lovely white sandy beaches.

109: COVID Clearing and Enjoying Antigua Green Island Anchorage. Farewell Captain Ben.

Arriving in Antigua, we had no idea what to expect. Our hope was that they would let us have access to the island, but we were prepared for not being allowed to go to shore. Thankfully, the Antiguans could not have been more welcoming. We took a day to clear, get Ben his Covid test, and chill in the bay. None of us had slept well due to a squall that came in the night before and sent the boat in every direction.

We took the time to walk around English Harbor and the UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy what we could access in the harbor. We also planned a trip to Green Island for the next day.

On Friday, we took off for Green Island, a 10 NM trip up the East Coast. It took us a couple of hours to arrive and we used the time to practice anchoring, tying up to a mooring ball, and navigating in tight spaces with surrounding reefs. We also enjoyed some snorkeling and meeting Yuka and Francesco, owners of s/v Oroboro, a blog we have followed for the past few years! It was a wonderful overnight in a gorgeous bay.

On Saturday, we hauled anchor and headed back to English Harbour, this time dropping anchor in Falmouth Bay. We also reviewed navigation bouys and making anchoring decisions independent of Ben, who was leaving us on Sunday.

In the late afternoon, we picked up Lauren (SailingCita) from the dock. I met Lauren on the WOMEN WHO SAIL Facebook site. She had just posted that she completed a delivery to Antigua and was ready for more work. We offered her a place on our boat and free passage to Sint Maarten if she would help crew. So, we decided to have dinner so she could take a look at the boat and see if she wanted to join us on the passage.

It was great to welcome someone new as we were saying goodbye to Captain Ben.

NEW TO OUR CHANNEL?
We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our NEW life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we have very little sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call home. After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia.

So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too!

As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures!
