Our next stop on our Baltic Cruise, onboard the Carnival Pride, was Helsinki, Finland. We ventured out on our own and found the public transportation to get over to the historical Sea Fortress Island aka Suomenlinna.

A Tour of SUOMENLINNA SEA FORTRESS in Helsinki Finland
SUOMENLINNA SEA FORTRESS travel vlog: I caught a ferry from Helsinki to Suomenlinna, a historic sea fortress built by the Swedes in the 18th century to protect against Russian expansionism.

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is around 3 miles off the coast of Helsinki and accessed by regular ferries that depart and arrive at least every hour. The sea fortress is built across eight small islands and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. I decided to make my visit a day trip from Helsinki and spend a few hours walking around the islands on a self guided tour.
Sadly this was my final day in Finland but I enjoyed the slow pace and relaxing nature of walking around Suomenlinna and taking in the pretty gardens, historic fortifications and charming views. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next country!

Suomenlinna (Finnish; until 1918 Viapori), or Sveaborg (Swedish), is an inhabited sea fortress built on eight islands about 4 km southeast of the city center of Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is popular with tourists and locals, who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site. Originally named Sveaborg (Castle of the Swedes), or Viapori as called by Finnish-speaking Finns, it was renamed in Finnish to Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 for patriotic and nationalistic reasons, though it is still known by its original name in Sweden and by Swedish-speaking Finns.
The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism. The general responsibility for the fortification work was given to Augustin Ehrensvärd. The original plan of the bastion fortress was strongly influenced by the ideas of Vauban, the foremost military engineer of the time, and the principles of the star fort style of fortification, albeit adapted to a group of rocky islands.
