Gibraltar is a tiny British territory located on the southern tip of Spain just 14 km north of Morocco.
It is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar and is commonly known as, The Rock.
We took a drive down from Marbella Spain to see this iconic landmark and to enjoy a little slice of Britain in the far south of Europe. We started with a Gibraltar Street walk from Spain to cross the border into the British territory of Gibraltar.
Our first stop was the top of the rock observation deck that offered stunning panoramic views of Gibraltar. We not only saw Gibraltar, but we saw across straight of Gibraltar to Morocco in Africa and Spain’s Costa del Sol. It is truly spectacular. But the star attraction is definitely the rock of Gibraltar itself.
One of the star attractions of Gibraltar is the Ape’s Den where you’ll find a group of monkeys who have decided to call this place home at the cable car’s mid-station. But the Gibraltar monkeys are everywhere. Legend has it that as long as the macaques inhabit Gibraltar, the British will remain.
The monkeys were so important to the British, that they were placed under the armies protection and Winston Churchill even ordered more monkeys from Morocco when their numbers were on the decline. They can be very feisty though so make sure to keep your distance.
The Skywalk is a glass walking dangling 340 meters above sea level. It offers panoramic views of three countries and two continents and is said to be able to withstand the weight of 5 asian elephants.
It’s an amazing hike through the rock of Gibraltar and we followed the rocky trails from one attraction to another. Gibraltar was heavily fortified and there are plenty of ruins, guard stations and old lookouts to explore.

GIBRALTAR | The Best Day Trip From Malaga, Spain
Gibraltar is a British territory, a 2 hour drive from Malaga, Spain. Gibraltar is famous for its military forts hidden within the Rock of Gibraltar, a nearly 1,400 ft tall limestone ridge jutting up from the Mediterranean sea. After going through border control and getting our passports stamped, we ate a full english breakfast and hiked to the top of The Rock. Although we took the road up to the top, we hiked down the Mediterranean steps with some of the sketchiest stairs we have ever seen.

5. Visit Europa Point
Europa Point is the southernmost point of Gibraltar and offers spectacular views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the African coast. The point is home to several historic landmarks, including the Trinity Lighthouse, the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, and the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe. Visitors can also see the remains of a 14th-century Moorish castle and enjoy the beautiful botanical gardens.
In addition to its historic landmarks and beautiful botanical gardens, Europa Point is also a popular spot for watching migratory birds. The point is located at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, making it a strategic location for birdwatching enthusiasts. Visitors can observe a wide range of bird species, including raptors, waterfowl, and seabirds, as they pass through the region on their migratory journeys.
4. Explore the Moorish Castle
The Moorish Castle is a medieval fortress built by the Moors in the 8th century, and later expanded by the Spanish and the British. The castle features a tower, a courtyard, and several defensive walls and towers, as well as a museum that displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history of Gibraltar. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the city and the sea from the castle's ramparts.
In addition to its historical significance, the Moorish Castle also has several legends associated with it. One such legend is that of the famous Moorish princess, Zaynab, who is said to have been imprisoned in the castle by her own father. According to the legend, Zaynab escaped from the castle by using a rope made of her own hair, and eventually found refuge in the nearby town of San Roque.
3. Visit the Gibraltar Museum
The Gibraltar Museum is a small but fascinating museum that showcases the rich history and culture of Gibraltar, from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum features interactive exhibits, artifacts, and displays that cover topics such as geology, archaeology, natural history, and the military history of Gibraltar. Visitors can also see the remains of a Neanderthal skull and learn about the Great Siege of Gibraltar.
One of the highlights of the Gibraltar Museum is the exhibit on the prehistoric period, which includes displays on the first human settlers in Gibraltar, the Neanderthals. Visitors can see the remains of a Neanderthal skull that was discovered in Gibraltar in the 1840s, providing evidence of early human habitation in the area.

Its geopolitical past and present and position as one of the world's richest places is what makes it unique place worth visiting. The people don't identify as British nor Spanish, they identify as Gibraltarian.. So that begs the question.. How similar to Great Britian is it? Brexit has also been an ongoing issue the last few years. In this travel vlog, we visit the British overseas territory called Gibraltar. It's known for its rock and the monkeys that live on it. This peninsula can be reached via the border crossing with Spain, and you can enter by walking across the airport runway on foot. We explored this remarkable piece of land and created this travel guide for you.

Gibraltar! A British overseas territory, located at the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula. Known for its rock, its Barbary Macaque monkeys, their extensive history regarding defending their territory, their typical UK telephone booths and one of the few places in the world where you can walk across the airport runway by foot. We start our day at the Gibraltar cable car, which will take us to the monkeys on top of the rock.
Once you arrive at the top station, you can enjoy breathtaking views and the first monkeys welcome you with pleasure. Follow the instructions indicated on the signs at all times, as you don't want them on their wrong side.
The monkeys are a joy to watch. Watching them take in the beautiful views, is a real delight. After seeing that, you can't help but do the same yourself. The observation platform provides beautiful views from all sides, and given Gibraltar's location, this creates an unique experience.
From the observation platform, you can walk a little higher,without paying extra for entry to the nature reserve. But visiting the Nature Reserve is definitely worth it. After entering the nature reserve, we continue our way to the Skywalk, passing a feeding station for the monkeys on the way.
The skywalk located at top of the Northern Pillar of Hercules, offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of three countries spread across two continents. That said, it is not for people with fear of heights.
The views are fantastic everywhere on the rock, but the highest viewpoint is O'Hara's Battery. It is located near the southern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. O'Hara's Battery itself was closed due to renovation work, so we continued on our way to the Mediterranean Steps.
The Mediterranean Steps is a beautiful hiking trail that goes all the way from the highest point of the rock, down to the Jew's Gate. We did not walk this trail due to lack of time, but instead walked to the Windsor Suspension Bridge. The bridge hangs 70 metres above a deep ravine. It is not for the faint hearted.
Via the Windsor Suspension Bridge, we arrived at the Apes Den. Given the name, we expected most of the monkeys here. This was not the case, but there were a few. We couldn't get enough of them!
The adventure on the rock was almost over. After saying goodbye to the monkeys, we walked towards the Moorish Castle.
Gibraltar has a tumultuous history, and the Moorish Castle is one of the unique things left over, from the time before Gibraltar fell into the hands of the British. The castle itself is not really worth seeing from the inside, but the outside is.
The Rock has given us a wonderful day, but it is time to explore the rest of Gibraltar. Starting at the Grand Casemates Square. Its a nice square with restaurants and the starting point of the main shopping street in Gibraltar. Towards the end of this street, we will have lunch at Amar's Bakery, a Jewish restaurant. After that, we continue our day to Europa Point.
Line bus number two gets you to Europa Point quick and easily. You can only pay in cash with pounds, so keep this in mind. Europa point is the southernmost point of Gibralter, it has a lighthouse, a mosque, and a number of other smaller monuments.
The mosque can also be visited within opening hours. We missed these opening hours, but it is also a magnificent mosque from the outside, From Europa Point, we catch line 2 back to the city centre for our last activity of the day. Ocean Village, a stunning waterfront nestled between two beautiful marinas and the Rock of Gibraltar.
Home to two Casinos, a nightclub and a lot of choice in terms of bars and international restaurants.
It looks stunning and it’s the ideal place to end the day in Gibraltar. Lovely by the water, several options to get something to eat, and close to the border crossing with Spain.
