ONE YEAR | Renovating Two Stone Cabins in the Italian Alps
I'm one year in building a homestead in these two stone barns at this plot of land in the mountains in Piedmont, Italy. The first months I focused on the electricity, water connection and creating comfortable space to live on the land, whilst I was waiting for the building permit.

YEAR TWO | Renovating Two Stone Cabins in the Italian Alps
Compilation of the second year living off the grid in Italy. I was halfway the roof renovation of the first cabin and got it weather tight just before heavy snowfall. During the darkest days of winter I carved out wooden rain gutters. Then moved on downstairs with the big work: digging out the floor, building foundation walls, digging trenches for drainage, sewage and plumbing. In summer I poured a floor, completely rebuild the small side room, replaced a lintel, fixed the holes and cracks and pointed the inside walls.

Complete Renovation of a Traditional Stone Roof in the Italian Alps
The renovation of the first roof in one video. I started in July 2022 and got it weather tight just before the snow arrived in November. The rain gutters are made of wood, which took me a long time, dealing with the challenges of winter. In early February the roof was already finished, but I wanted to include the finishing of outside walls in this video as well, which was done in between other jobs. One Room Cabin Renovation! Making our Own Tiny House! Living Off Grid in the Woods! Episode 3
#GoingOffGrid is hard work, but it will be so worth it! We could not do this without the help of our family and friends! 6 days of nonstop WORK! We tore apart the inside of our one-room cabin and replaced the insulation and drywall! Because this is somewhat of a tiny house at only 20x20 feet we built a loft to use as a bedroom! This was just the first step of many cabin renovations and we are so excited to share this journey with you all!

Growin up together as high school sweethearts, we got married at 19 years old in August of 2016. We have always dreamed of a life of adventure! We started traveling the US any free weekend we had, finding free campgrounds wherever we could, and converting our truckbed into a home for three weeks to make the trip across the country. After an incredible 3 years of living, working, and traveling in our self converted Sprinter Van we made the very tough decision to abandon it in Africa to take a rescue flight back to Canada. As it has for all of us this global pandemic has flipped our world upside down. When our Prime Minister announced that he was sending repatriation flights over to Africa to pick up Canadians who were stuck (due to border closures) we consulted with friends and family closest to us and realized that in this time of crisis we should be back in our home country. Halting our dream of driving around the world was a hard pill to swallow which is why we knew we needed a big project to keep our mind + body busy while social distancing back here in Toronto. Enter building an off-grid tiny house on wheels!! But after nearly 6 months, we realized that our dreams of continuing van life across North America in our new van build were not a current reality with the state of the world. So, we've found ourselves pursuing something we've dreamed of since we first got together 8 years ago... a cabin in the woods ????

The expansion finally begins! We are adding an extra room to our Italian stone cabin in the foothills of the Italian alps. We have excavated around the site and are now using the stones that were excavated to build out a stone room that matches the existing stone cabin.

Back in 2020, we bought this rundown cabin in the Canadian wilderness to make a family home and create a cozy home base. We are so proud of how far we've come with this (mostly) DIY project and couldn't be happier to be raising a beautiful new baby out here in the woods. Is there honestly anything better than being in nature, getting your toes in the dirt and swimming in Canadian fresh water lakes? This week we’re moving on to a tiny space that we think will have a BIG impact for us and baby! The boat shed has long been a rundown (kind of disgusting) building that we just throw our junk in and forget about it. But, the vision is to turn this 150 sq ft into a functional storage shed that ALSO doubles as a mini bar, change table for baby and keeper of the sand toys for the beach :)
