How to get to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany

Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited castles in the world. More than 1.3 million people visit it annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer. It is located in the municipality of Schwangau near Füssen and it lies at an elevation of 800 m (2,620 ft) at the southwest border of the German state of Bavaria.

Neuschwanstein Castle can only be visited within a guided tour and you can book it directly at the official website without going through a third party. The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes. The admission ticket is valid for a guided tour of the castle at a specific time. Keep in mind that the guided tours start punctually; in the event of late arrival, participation in the guided tour is no longer possible and you may not be allowed to enter the castle. Reservation in advance is necessary due to the high demand.

Hiking from the ticket center to the castle gate can take up to 45 minutes so make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes before your guided tour starts.

Photos and videos are not allowed inside the castle.

✅ How do you get to the castle?
If you are coming from Munich, take a train from Munich Central Station to Füssen. There is a direct train every 2 hours. There is also an additional connecting service that operates every two hours as well, requiring a change of trains in Kaufbeuren. Both the direct train and the other train with a connection in Kaufbeuren take approximately 2 hours to reach Füssen.

Once you arrive at Füssen’s train station, take bus number 78. The bus station is just right next to the train station. The bus is clearly marked for the Hohenschwangau castles. You will see a lot of tourists rushing to board a bus, you really can’t miss it.

The bus will take you to Hohenschwangau where the ticket office of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles is located. The bus ride takes approximately 5 minutes. Keep in mind that if you already booked a ticket online at the official website of Neuschwanstein castle, you WILL NOT need to enter the ticket center to redeem your ticket. Your online ticket should be good enough.

From the ticket center, you have 3 options to reach the castle gate:
1. You can hike all the way to the castle gate. This can take up to 45 minutes. This is what I did to reach the castle. I recommend hiking because you will enjoy the scenery along the way.
2. You can take a horse-drawn carriage ride. This can take up to 25 minutes. You will still have to walk for about 5 minutes because the horse-drawn carriage does not take you to the gate.
3. You can take a shuttle. The shuttle takes you to Marienbrücke viewpoint where the bridge is located. That bridge offers a great view of the castle. You will still have to walk for about 15 minutes to reach the castle gate.

Much like every other foreigner in Munich, Bavaria, we jumped to visit Germany's most famous attraction at the first chance we got. After much video planning and preparation, we headed out to Neuschwanstein, only to be sorely disappointed with this overcrowded, over hyped castle. After living in Germany for three years, and exploring Bavaria deeply, we have solidified our impressions of the Fairy Tale Castle, and come back with some alternatives.

TIPS FOR VISITING GERMANY'S FAIRY TALE CASTLES (NEUSCHWANSTEIN & HOHENSCHWANGAU)

Need tips for visiting Germany's fairy tale castles? Check out our vlog for helpful advice on how to spend the day exploring Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle.

Two of Bavaria's most beautiful castles are only one mile apart from each other, so we were able to easily visit both castles in one day. Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) was intended to be the home of King Ludwig II, and Hohenschwangau Castle was King Ludwig II of Bavaria's childhood home.

After parking in the village of Hohenschwangau, we began our hike to the castle. The hike took about 45 minutes. The castle was still in a fog when we arrived, so we decided to walk around the castle grounds. When we walked to the back of the castle, we could see Hohenschwangau Castle which was King Ludwig II of Bavaria's childhood home.

Unfortunately, Mary's Bridge was closed so we didn't get views of the castle from the famous viewpoint. After spending some time admiring the fairytale castle, we headed down the hill and grabbed some lunch from Neuschwanstein Castle Restaurant.

Next, we walked to Hohenschwangau which only took about 20 minutes. At this castle, we were able to explore the castle gardens. Views of the surrounding area were also pretty spectacular. Visiting the castles made for a great day trip from Munich.

Here are our top tips for visiting Neuschwanstein:
-If you don't want to pay to see the inside of the castles, it is free to walk around the grounds of both castles.
- If you want to see the inside of the castles, book a ticket online. You have to be on a guided tour to enter the castle and the tickets have specific times. Factor in enough time to pick up your reserved tickets and time to get to the castle.
-There are several ways to get to the castle (bus, carriage ride, hike). If you opt for the bus or carriage ride, you will still have some walking because they can't bring visitors all the way to the castle entrance.

Neuschwanstein Castle Eurail / Interrail first class train from Munich, Germany to Füssen, Germany

This is part of a series of videos documenting my Eurail / Interrail trip. I prefer not to speak in videos so will include details about each trip in the video description. The trip purchased was for an Interrail pass as a non-EU citizen with a pending temporary residency application from an EU country (I had a stamp in my passport stating that my application was under review).

General overview:
This particular trip from Munich, Germany to Füssen, Germany took approximately 2 hours with a 30 minute wait between trains, and did not require a seat reservation.

My opinion on the RE 3884 first class train and this trip:
The interior of the RE 3884 first class train for Munich, Germany to Kaufbeuren, Germany via Eurail / Interrail was in pristine condition. The seats were very comfortable, and they were extremely clean. The bathroom was also nice. The seating area features charging areas. No food nor beverages are offered during this trip.

The trip itself had didn't have any particularly memorable views, but it was relaxing. Overall, I would do this trip again especially because it did not feel like a long trip.

My opinion on the BRB RB77 first class train and this trip:
The interior of the BRB RB77 first class train for Kaufbeuren, Germany to Füssen, Germany via Eurail / Interrail was in pristine condition. The seats were very comfortable, and they were extremely clean. No food nor beverages are offered during this trip. There was no information about whether an additional fee needed to be paid for this leg of the trip to Füssen, Germany to see Neuschwanstein Castle because the Eurail / Interrail app does not have this trip available, but both going there and coming back proved that no additional ticket nor reservation is required. The train inspector simply looked at the manually created reservation in my Eurail / Interrail app and that was enough.
