Flying the Made in China Jet - ARJ21-700!

A special flight on the Chinese made ARJ21-700 on Chengdu Airlines from Chengdu to Linfen and back. Check out the interior of the Chinese made ARJ21. Watch the takeoff and landing performance of ARJ21. Enjoy commentary from the crew and myself about the ARJ21.


Join me for an incredible sight-seeing trip to Hukou waterfall in China, which flows quickly and forcefully into the Yellow river. I take an internal flight within China from Chengdu Shuangliu international airport, which is the major international airport that serves Chengdu, the capital of the Chinese province Sichuan, to Linfen Qiaoli airport in Shanxi aboard the first ever aeroplane made in China, the ARJ21.

I use Chengdu airlines but there are another two airlines which make use of the ARJ21 aeroplane – Urumqi Air and the Mongolian Genghis Khan airlines.

The placing of the engine right at the rear of the aeroplane makes our seat at the back very noisy and one of the major disadvantages of flying on the ARJ21 is the general noisiness and din overall; even sitting at the front, it’s hard to ignore the sound of the heavily labouring engine! It’s also frustrating that the ARJ21-700 has to fly so low as this makes the aeroplane vulnerable to the weather. As I hear in my interview with the captain, the ARJ21 is not able to fly in heavy rain!

This aeroplane is not certified by either the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), however, the larger, more able C919 jet is beginning to gain popularity in China, as the captain tells me, and this can only be a good thing, since the C919 is able to carry many more passengers (the ARJ21 is limited to only 90 passengers, which is a problem in a country with more than a billion people in it!) and also more cargo.

The ARJ21 jet was commissioned by the Chinese government in 2002 and the first aeroplane entered service in 2015 with Chengdu airlines. It is a twin engine, regional get which is made by the Chinese company Comac. ARJ itself stands for: Advanced Regional Jet.

After being given the emergency information (I am seated with extra leg room in a seat by the emergency door, but the price I have to pay is that I get extra safety tuition and am in charge of opening the emergency door for other passengers – I’d best pay attention!), I’m up in the air. The food could be better – I initially go for the congee but it’s so bland that I switch to the chicken noodles. There is an unexpected bonus though – a free breakfast with yummy red bean paste bread, a Chinese delicacy.

The sight of Hukou waterfall itself is astonishing – keep watching to the end to see it in all its glory. I feel that I had a very enjoyable day out and, as a further bonus, I was able to enjoy a number of the hi-tech comforts at Linfen airport before taking my flight home, including automatic massage seats and even a karaoke booth!

Flying the COMAC C919 - China's Game Changer?

I just flew on China’s new airplane COMAC C919 from Shanghai to Chengdu with China Eastern Airlines.

It’s been more than 3 years since I last visited mainland China. The flight was a pleasant and modern one for me and many other aviation enthusiasts. Powered by the same CFM leap engines, the C919 shares many similarities with Airbus and Boeing. My flight took almost 3 hours, flying at 34,000 ft with a maximum speed of Mach 0.78.

During the flight, I experienced both C919 Business and Economy class seat features, the lavatory and galley. The middle seat width on C919 is half an inch wider to compensate for the shoulder room like A220. I spoke with the operating crew about their training and operation on the new C919.

At the end of the flight, I gave my verdict as a passenger on the C919. In short, the C919 needs to prove itself in commercial service that it can meet the economics and the required efficiency. Currently, there are over 500 orders by Chinese airlines and leasing companies but the future success depends on foreign certification of this airplane.

The COMAC ARJ21 Is Getting Its First International Operator

The COMAC ARJ21 is set to get its first international, non-China-based operator. Indonesian carrier TransNusa will take 30 of the regional jets as part of its relaunch next year. The ARJ21 is China’s first domestically made commercial aircraft and is in active use with eight mainland carriers today.

Jiangxi Air【ARJ-21】Inaugural Flight · China Made Regional Jet

After returning to China at the end of March, the prospect of flying internationally became ever slimmer. This video is the first of many to come series of domestic aviation in mainland China. In the end of May, I had the opportunity to participate in Jiangxi Air’s inaugural ARJ21 flight from Nanchang to Shanghai.

My very first flight onboard the very first China made regional jet was an uneventful one. ARJ21 has completed its maiden flight back in 2008 but only recently did it enter the fleet of major airlines in China. The home made aircraft resembles closely to the Mad dogs but has undesirable fuel consumption and cruising altitude limitation.

Jiangxi Air’s cabin interior is nothing out of ordinary with economy class only configuration. ARJ-21 may be a landmark for China’s COMAC - Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, but with no foreign certifications and lacklustre economies, it has a long path to trek before claiming its native sky.

The Comac ARJ21 Xiangfeng is a 78–90 seat regional jet manufactured by the Chinese state-owned aerospace company Comac. Development of the ARJ21 (Advanced Regional Jet) began in March 2002, the first prototype was rolled out on 21 December 2007, and made its maiden flight on 28 November 2008 from Shanghai. It received its CAAC Type Certification on 30 December 2014 and was introduced on 28 June 2016 by Chengdu Airlines. Resembling the McDonnell Douglas MD-80/MD-90 produced under licence in China, it features a 25° swept, supercritical wing designed by Antonov and twin rear-mounted General Electric CF34 engines.The development of the ARJ21 (Advanced Regional Jet) is a key project in the 10th Five-Year Plan of China. It began in March 2002 and was led by the state-owned ACAC consortium. The maiden flight of the ARJ21 was initially planned to take place in 2005 with commercial service beginning 18 months later.The programme became eight years behind schedule.[6] The design work was delayed and the final trial production stage did not begin until June 2006.

Flying the MADE IN CHINA JET - Indonesia's TransNusa COMAC ARJ21-700

Recently I flew with Indonesian low-cost carrier, TransNusa Airlines to try out the Made-In-China Jet, COMAC ARJ21-700. The airline is the first non-Chinese airline to operate ARJ21.

Honestly, I was surprised to see some issues on this new aircraft. TransNusa received the new ARJ21 in December, 2022 from COMAC, and the airline just launched its ARJ21 commercial operations in April. I've also seen some issues on other aircrafts, but I've never seen any issues like that on other aircraft which was delivered in less than a year. Check out the vlog✈️

인도네시아 저비용항공사인 '트랜스누사 항공'은 중국산 여객기 ARJ21-700을 도입하여, 지난 4월부터 상용 비행을 시작했습니다. 그동안 ARJ21은 중국 내 항공사만 운용했기에, 트랜스누사는 ARJ21을 운용하는 첫 중국 밖 항공사가 되었습니다.

호기심을 가지고 탑승했는데, 비행기 상태를 보고 꽤 놀랐네요. 도입한 지 얼마되지 않은 비행기가 벌써.. 품질 이슈가 보였습니다.
