Flying from St Helena to Cape Town

This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. This is not a time to travel, but instead...please Stay Home! Stick around to the end of the video for some of my thoughts about the state of travel today.

In this video, I'll share a bit from behind the scenes at the St. Helena airport as well as some scenes from the flight back to Cape Town with Airlink. But the real star of the show on the flight from St Helena to Cape Town was the approach at sunset past Table Mountain. It was truly jaw-dropping.

Watching this approach into Cape Town from St. Helena – undoubtedly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen from the air – was an opportunity to pause and reflect.

I have always taken great comfort – even assigned some of my own identity to the fact that, thanks to commercial aviation, I can get anywhere, anytime, in unbelievable comfort. Producing these videos about St. Helena has been a cathartic process for me. A reminder of what was possible not too long ago.

Of course, travel like this is not possible now. We’re each doing our part, staying home, washing our hands, maintaining social distance. These things are hard, we all know that. We miss being in the sky. We miss what aviation provides – that’s connection. And, stunning views like this. Views, I’m sorry to say, I didn’t fully appreciate before this crisis occurred.

Aviation brings the world together. A place like St. Helena – previously weeks away – becomes only a matter of hours from anywhere else on the planet. But, now we’re more apart than we’ve ever been.

We’re separated from our family, our friends, and the rest of the world. I hope we use this time to celebrate the small moments and to feel gratitude for what we can enjoy.

I feel for everyone who works in travel or people who travel for work. Your world has been rocked. These are strange times. But we know this: We know travel will return. Yes! It will be different, but it will return. Will travel be what it once was? Will the glamor be gone? I don’t know.

But I am sure of this: It will come back. Humans are explorers. We yearn to see the world, to seek new experiences, to make strangers our friends, to see new places. Commercial aviation will make this possible again.

I look forward to getting back in the air, to connecting with the world, as soon as it’s possible to do so. In the meantime, I’ll continue posting on this channel with the goal of bringing a little joy to you, along with a reminder of what was, and maybe a prediction or two about what will be.

Flying to St Helena Airport

This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place on 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. Here's a video with my thoughts on that situation:

This video is about flying to the St. Helena Airport. St. Helena Airport is one of the most challenging airports in the world. Less than ten commercial airline pilots are certified to land here!

At either end of the runway are massive cliffs, which create challenging wind conditions.

I’ve wanted to visit St. Helena for a long time. When the St. Helena Airport received its first commercial flight in 2017, the trip became far more viable for me. Before St. Helena Airport opened, a trip there required a five day boat trip just to get there.

St. Helena’s role in the Age of Exploration cannot be understated. The Portuguese used St. Helena as a secret base for restocking their ships (they left a heard of goats and planted citrus trees. It then became a key possession of the British East India Company before it was suddenly converted into a prison for the world’s most feared man – Napoleon. He died there, too. Today, it’s a fascinating British Overseas Territory accessed thanks to the St. Helena Airport.

In this video, we’ll explore the flight’s route, the passenger experience, and even peak behind the scenes at the St. Helena Airport to understand how it all works.

The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

Cape Town to St. Helena, Part 1 - Ep. 22

We leave Cape Town in our prop wash and head out across the Atlantic for our very first ocean crossing and it's just the two of us. See how we handle a 24 hour watch schedule with only 2 people and I tackle the worst sea sickness I have ever experienced. This is the first six days of a 13 day passage halfway across the Atlantic to St. Helena Island.

What To Do in St Helena

This trip to the St. Helena took place from 15 - 18 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. I do not encourage anyone to travel now. #StayHome. Here's a video with my thoughts on the current situation:

St. Helena may just be one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. The Saints are some of the kindest people I’ve ever come across in my travels. Because I had such a great time, I thought I’d try something different for this video about St. Helena.

I normally make videos here on YouTube about airlines, but perhaps the most amazing part of aviation are the places it can take. Places like St Helena. So, in this video about St Helena, I’m trying a little experiment: Let’s check out some things on the ground in St Helena! We’ll explore some of the highlights of St. Helena and some of what I enjoyed while I was here. Let me know what you think about this experiment by leaving comments. I always appreciate feedback! And next week, I’ll post a more typical video about my return to the mainland.

St. Helena is home to epic history, out-of-this-world scenery, and incredible opportunities for intreprid travelers.

We’ll explore the infamous Jacobs Ladder, Napoleon’s two residences on St. Helena, some of the hiking available on the island, as well as some of the most amazing vistas.

This is my first attempt at a video about something unrelated to aviation, so I’d appreciate your feedback. I think it’s probably fair to say I need to expand my coverage of things like accomodations and food if I continue with this. Also, maybe I’ll do this on a separate channel. Anyway, let me know what you think of this first attempt. And, also, let me know if you’re heading to St. Helena once we can all travel again!

Will One Of The World's Most Remote Islands Get A Direct London Flight?

After reporting on Titan Airways medical relief flight from London to St. Helena last Sunday, it brought up the question of whether a regular service between the United Kingdom and the isolated island would make sense. The arrival of Titan Airways Airbus A318-100 marked the first time an Airbus aircraft has landed on St. Helena and now has the locals all talking about a possible air link to Europe.

Jamestown, St. Helena Island, South Atlantic Ocean | Part 1

St. Helena Island is one of the most remote islands located in the South Atlantic Ocean. This is my first time to travel to this part of the world and I was very excited to visit and experience what is like living in a remote island.

Life on Tristan da Cunha – the World's Most Remote Inhabited Island

Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).

South African Airways A320 Business Class

This South African Airways A320 Business Class flight took place on 14 February 2020, before the major current travel disruptions. Here's a video with my thoughts on that situation:

This video about South African Airways A320 Business Class is as much a preview of my South African A350 flight to New York as anything. That said, before I post that video, I'll be sharing a bit more from my time at my ultimate destination: St. Helena. Because I started in Cape Town, I had to make my way over to Johannesburg and what better way than with South African Airways A320 Business Class?

South African Airways A320 Business Class service between Cape Town and Johannesburg showcases the airline's approach to domestic business class service. I had the chance to experience it on 14 February 2020.

On this flight, I explored the lounge in Cape Town, the seat, the food, the inflight entertainment, and the service aboard South African Airways A320 Business Class. I had no expectations for South African Airways or their A320 Business Class because this was my first time flying with them. It wasn't the last!

Soon, I'll be posting a video of my experience on their flagship from Johannesburg to New York! Don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss that video...or my upcoming Airlink flight to St. Helena!

Fly Airlink to St Helena

Landing on Runway 20 at St Helena Airport (HLE/FHSH) filmed from Horse Point Plain (SA8138)

Landing of the inaugural Airlink flight from Cape Town on December 3rd, 2019 (SA8138) on Runway 20 of St Helena Airport situated on a plateau flanked by steep cliffs

Saint Helena now has an airport, The 'most useless airport in the world'

The 'most useless airport in the world' has finally received its first plane. Months after the planned opening, a flight from Johannesburg on the island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean landed yesterday.g of the first line flight AFP
Today's flight took six hours to arrive at Saint Helena. On board were mainly residents of the island and journalists from British and international media. After the landing they were personally welcomed by the governor of the island.

During the flight, the 68 passengers were already trained by the crew for champagne and chocolate. Thank you for being part of this historic flight, said the pilot before leaving South Africa. On Saint Helena, which has been British since 1658, about 4500 people live. The main tourist attractions are Napoleon's house, its empty grave and a cemetery of prisoners of war from the Boer War. In addition, visitors can dive and walk in unspoilt nature.

In order to accommodate the expected admission of additional tourists, the Saints, like residents of the island, had appointed additional hotel rooms: the capacity grew from a few tens to more than a hundred.

The first device goes back to South Africa today. In addition to this weekly flight, there will also be a charter flight to Ascension Island every month, another 1200 kilometers away.

Over 300 million euros were allocated to land an airport on the remote British island, 1900 kilometers off Angola's coast. The investment should make more tourism possible; So far, a five-day boat trip from Cape Town was the only way to get there.

However, when the runway was almost finished, it appeared that tragic windshield could not land large aircraft. Residents were frustrated, politicians were disgraced.

In recent months, alternatives have been sought for the major aircraft the island should do. A weekly scheduled flight with an Embraer E190 has now been chosen instead of a larger Boeing 737. Some test flights have recently gone without problems.O aeroporto mais inútil do mundo finalmente recebeu seu primeiro avião.

O primeiro dispositivo volta a África do Sul hoje. Além deste vôo semanal, haverá também um voo charter para a Ilha da Ascensão a cada mês, a mais 1200 quilômetros de distância.
