Flying Mooney to St. Pierre and Miquelon

Took off from Linden. 3.5 hours to Halifax. Picked up my dad and his friend. Made it to the French island of St. Pierre in 2 more hours. Next morning, flew over to Miquelon. Next day flew to St John's in Newfoundland. After a brief visit in St. John's, flew back to Linden with a stop for Customs and Lobsters in Portland Maine. 3 day trip, 15 hours flying, 3 countries, 5 different states/provinces. I have now been to every Canadian Province.

Caribbean Mooney Flying #2.3 - St Thomas to Beef Island

March 21, 2016 - Day 4 of my second Mooney flying adventure to the Caribbean. We spent all of day 3 enjoy St Thomas and set off on day 4 with two flights. The first was to Beef Island to visit Tortola of the British Virgin Islands. This was the shortest flight of the trip so I decided to post it in full for those who wanted to see things in real time. I sped up the taxiing but everything else is in real time. Video is available in HD and 4K and features a second view inlay. Enjoy.

How to fly the Hudson River VFR SFRA demonstrated in Mooney M20J

Video about how to fly the 3 levels of the Hudson River VFR SFRA in New York City. With my trusty sidekick and backup squawk, Kili, I set off to fly the Hudson at 800ft in the local level, the 1,200ft transient VFR exclusion level, and then in the 1,500ft+ Skyline route in the Bravo airspace. Get the view and full experience at different levels in this single video.

Don't forget to review FAR 93.350 - 93.353, 91.215, 91.131 as well as the NYC TAC Chart insert for the Skyline route and Hudson SFRA Special Flight Rules Area. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the route and all relevant information before flight. These guide is simply meant as an illustration and to help you get started and not instruction or necessarily everything required. Please use common sense and good piloting. Fly safe.

Caribbean Mooney Flying #2.4 - Beef Island to St Martin

March 21, 2016 - Day 4 of my second Mooney flying adventure to the Caribbean 2nd flight of the day. After spending the day at Beef Island, we got back in the plane to continue to St Martin. It was a fairly straightforward 45 minute long flight IFR to St Martin at 5000ft.

Things got a bit more hectic once handed off to the St Martin controller. There was just one controller working 6 positions at the somewhat busy airport. Clearance, Ground, Tower, Approach, Departure, and Ramp control were all being handled on a single frequency by a single person! This is an airport with 767 and larger jets coming in! My initial calls were going unanswered for the first 10 minutes. When I finally go a hold of approach, I was being some unclear instructions. Still, through the confusion, I made the RNAV 10 approach, flew low overhead spectators on Maho Beach, and landed in St Martin!

Near Midair Close Call - Mooney and Cessna by Caldwell

I was flying a PALS flight from Boston to Caldwell on an IFR flight plan. We were in the descent for Caldwell on an ATC assigned heading when suddenly a Cessna Skyhawk appeared out of nowhere coming right for us. Actually he was probably flying level and we were descending into him.

A passenger in the back pointed, but I could not see or hear her (microphone up). I spotted the traffic myself and pulled up to mediate the conflict. I reflexively turned to the right, but since the traffic was slightly to the right this would not have helped. However, the vertical separation that I created by pulling up was the action that saved the day.

I was in communication with ATC while the other aircraft was not. ATC did not point out this traffic. Just goes to show that even IFR in a Mode C area, ultimately you still have to see and avoid. Full video of the flight coming soon but just wanted to point out this little episode since I happened to catch it on camera.
