LONG FERRY RIDE MAZATLAN TO LA PAZ, MEXICO (2021) BAJA FERRIES

I was in the town of Mazatlan in the west side of Mexico and about to go on a over night ferry ride across the gulf of California and in to the town of La Paz in the Baja California peninsula (with Baja Ferries). I had paid 1500 pesos for the ride that would take 17 hours over night. Watch the video to find out what I did on the ferry! I had also previously come from other towns in Mexico further down south in Zihuatanejo And Manzanillo.

Taking the Ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan

Two ferry boat services cross the Sea of Cortez from La Paz, Baja California, to Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico. We traveled on the TMC Cargo Ferry loaded with large shipping trucks, five RV and a few cars. Why take the cargo ferry? Answer—we could stay in our camper with our furry family dog, cook our meals, and isolate away from other travelers and the crew. Not as fun, but safe and comfortable. Our Mitsubishi Delica is only 17 feet long, but fully self-contained. For the 13 hours it took to cross the Sea of Cortez we had a great view, cooked our dinner, slept well, had our coffee, and watch a beautiful sunrise! It was a bit bumpy at times, but that is part of being on the water. Part of the ferry crossing is preparation before you go! We did our research and learned from the posts of other overlanders. Our experience was smooth going—not at all a nightmare. If you are crossing for the first time here are a few tips. Go and reserve your travel in-person at least the day before travel. It is simple—they write your name on a list. Go early to the ferry terminal on the day of crossing. Our ferry was schedule to depart at 5 pm and we went to the terminal at 12 noon. Load your camper with only essentials for the crossing. Your ticket is based on weight of your camper and length. Why carry full a full tank of water and diesel? Bring your masks! And you must have your original Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit (TIP) and passports to show upon entering the terminal or you cannot buy a ticket. Happy Travels!

Descubre la experiencia de viajar en Baja Ferries

Ride Day 17: La Paz to Mazatlan to Puerto Vallarta

Full Post: I have included my trip across the Gulf of California from La Paz to Mazatlan onboard the Baja Ferry Service to Puerto Vallarta. As this is kind of like a border crossing, I will give as much information as I can. If you have no done some research, there are quite a few horror stories relating to the Baja Ferries service. I, however, had a pretty fantastic experience. A few days earlier I dropped into the ferry terminal and spoke with some immigration officials, and they told me just to make sure I have all documentation in order and return there a few hours before departure. Right next to the terminal is where you can get your temporary vehicle import permit (sticker) for your motorbike. You may have already got this when you entered Mexico through the border. You will also need your tourist card, originals, and copies of your passport, registration, title, drivers license, and insurance which you can get from Sanborns to get your permit.

Right next to the terminal is where you can get your import sticker (permit) for your motorbike. You may have already when you entered Mexico through the border. You will also need your tourist card, originals, and copies of your passport, registration, title and drivers license to get the permit. Once you have documents, you just go to a room next door and make a copy (20 cents). Once you have documents, you just go to a room next door and make a copy (20 cents) and then return to the desk for final paperwork and permit. The sticker you get should be attached to your bike, but the immigration officials did not care. The thing you have to remember is depending on the size and year of your bike you have to pay a $400 USD refundable deposit, which you get when you exit Mexico

With everything in order, you are ready to go. When you arrive at the Ferry Terminal on the day of your ride, you just go to the first immigration stop, show the paperwork, then they direct you to get bike weighed, and from there you just ride your motorcycle onto the boat. The only issue I had was getting all my gear up the stairs and into my room, I had a lot, and there is no one to help. Then once you have your gear, you go to the desk, get your room - pay the $20USD deposit for keys and remote control and settle in. Of course, if you don't have a room and are roughing it, you don't need that final step.

I got a room with a balcony, and the ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan was only about 20% capacity. I also got a free meal with my ticket, which was basic, but ok and then I settled down for a few beers and chatted for a while with a couple from the UK traveling south in their 4WD and another adventure rider and then went to my room to get some sleep!

Mazatlan to Puerto Vallarta

The ferry ride to Mazatlan was smooth, and I woke early to find hundreds of dolphins riding alongside the ship, birds following them and diving to get the fish that were jumping out of the water, it was quite a spectacle to wake up to. We arrived on time around 10 am in the morning, and it was a beautiful day in Mazatlan.

I only stayed one night in Mazatlan and made my way south to Puerto Vallarta where I decided to stay a few nights at a nice hotel on the cliffs and by the water! The only problem was it seemed that the hotel was not only a party place but also a hotel that targeted the gay community, so that was pretty funny. Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful place, very touristy, but nice nonetheless, the beaches are cool too, and there are lots of water activities to be had. I used my time to relax and do some planning for some long rides ahead!

The trip from Mazatlan to Puerto Vallarta took me through El Rosario, Villa Union, Tecualilla, Sinaloa, Zomatal, El Tesorero, Tepic, Xalisco, Testerazo, Compostela, Mesillas, Las Varas, Monteon, San Fransisco, Bucerias and onto my final destination in Puerto Vallarta

Sailing Mexico - Episode 5 La Paz to Mazatlan

We sail our Island Packet 37 cutter rigged sailboat from La Paz to Mazatlan in this Episode 5. The sail over was very mellow with hardly any wind at all. All that changed the morning we needed to enter Mazatlan Harbor. Winds picked up and the waves across the bar were increasing. I had to surf our sailboat into the harbor entrance. Sketchy.

While in Mazatlan, we check out Old Town, the Malecon, and take a bus trip down to Puerto Vallarta to get some of our mail.

We also rent a car and drive from Puerto Vallarta, through Mexico City, and then to Acapulco. We spend a week in Acapulco, visiting the silver town of Taxco.

We drive up the coast and visit Ixtapa and Manzanillo before returning to Puerto Vallarta.

Mexico 15: San Blas / Mazunte / Ferry to BajaCaliforniaSur: TECOLOTE Part 1

In diesem schönen Ort gab es nämlich brutal viele sogenannte No see hims - also Sandflöhe oder Sandfliegen.

Ensenada + La Paz Carnaval - VIDEO TOUR (Baja CA, Mexico)

Exploring Ensenada in Mexico and also checking out the La Paz Carnaval! We carnaval took place on the 25th of February 2020. It was a nice surprise to see while visiting!

------------------

Carnaval La Paz dates back to the 1880's and was originally established as a grand ball for the socially elite. The first queen was elected just after the turn of the century and the Black & White Ball at the La Perla Hotel became a part of the celebration despite the Mexican Revolution raging on the Mexican mainland in 1916.
Carnaval La Paz really came into its own after interest in the event grew in the 1950's and 60's. It was during that period that Carnaval evolved into an event for all social strata of residents and tourists. With the successful draw of Carnaval in Mazatlan a trans-Sea rivalry existed for many years between that city and La Paz.

My first Carnaval La Paz was in 2000, and just in the past 15 years the event has undergone some definite changes. The most memorable event of my first Carnaval was the fist fight that broke out in the parade staging area between drivers of the various beer companies being represented in the parade. Evidently, there was a disagreement about who was going to lead off the parade. The solution was quite Solomon-esque, the result was some awkward lags in the parade that left folks wondering twice if the parade was over. With three separate 'starts' on three nights, each company lead off the front segment once.

canaval2007logosm.jpg
Poster for Carnaval La Paz 2007 - The Carnaval Poster fell victim to the electronic age
Floats were smaller and less ornate, usually based on a flatbed trailer. I don't specifically recall any floats being towed by farm equipment, but it was certainly a possibility. Today many of the flat bases are recycled year to year by various civic and commercial groups that support the event.
Carnaval La Paz almost went away in 2013, as the ballooning cost of the event to the city and the limited benefits to the local economy raised questions among many business people and tax payers. La Paz is now a much larger city, both population wise and physical size verses when Carnaval benefitted more of the business community as more was located in downtown.

For myself, one of the great losses to time of Carnaval was the end of the Carnaval Poster. From the mid 90's to 2012 the large, often 30x40 Carnaval poster was a suitable for framing keepsake of the years events and a time line of the evolution and sophistication of Carnaval. A victim of the social media age, the Carnaval poster was expensive to make and distribute and in 2013 was replaced with the Carnaval Video, that was available on YouTube and the Facebook page for Carnaval La Paz. The first year's version was greeted with mixed reviews. It was glitzy, it had pretty girls dancing to a more than a little repetitive theme music on the beach in Balandra, but apparently the clip producers lacked any footage of actual events at Carnaval. A second edition was released a little later, but the patch sorta ruined the original motif.
