Family Has Been Sailing Around The World Non-Stop For 9 Years

The Gifford family left their home in Washington in 2008 to sail around the world. They have not stopped since. We met up with them in the summer of 2016 in Noank, Connecticut to learn their story and to see how they all live on a 47-foot sailboat.

Follow the Giffords on their journey.

Special thanks to Aline Escalon for providing some additional footage from her own film, Totem.

Ep1 | This family's spontaneous decision to sail the world - NEW Dream, NO Experience

Welcome to our very first episode!! :)

See how this American/Norwegian family of 5 decides to go sailing from our home in Norway with no prior sailing experience.

Stay tuned until the end part where you will see a sneak peak of some of our adventures weaved into the story about how we became liveaboards and have made it down the coast of Europe (in the rough fall season) over the North Sea & through the English Channel.
Then, down to the Algarve Coast, Portugal for the passage to the Canary Islands in early February, 2021. Our goal is the Caribbean Islands after visiting Madeira and possibly the Cape Verde Islands.

Toddler sees the WORLD by SAIL - Desert Island Family Adventure SV Delos Ep 394

Go to to get a 1 year supply of Vitamin D + 5 individual travel packs FREE with your first purchase. Thanks to Athletic Greens for sponsoring this video!

We traded our 9-5's 13 years ago for something totally different...find out what it's like to live a free, nomadic, and wild life at sea!

We've got another feel good episode comin' at ya this week! It pretty much ticks all the boxes of what we love in an episode...good sailing conditions, adventures with our family and amazing friends, margaritas, and of course some boat work to balance everything out.

In this episode we go on our first proper land mission. We hike from one side of the island we were anchored at to the other via a stunning valley that is full of cacti everywhere. Something about the desert just feels incredibly special and fascinating, it's so different than our usual cruiser habitat of white sandy beaches and palm trees. It's pretty wild when we think about all the different environments Delos has been in over the last year...The rainforests and mangroves of Panama, a fresh water lake 85 feet above sea level in the middle of the Panama Canal, the wild jungle of Costa Rica with howler monkeys echoing through the anchorages, an all inclusive beach resort marina in one of the busiest tourist spots in Mexico, and now here we were in this magic wonderland where the desert meets the sea standing under a cactus that's as tall as a house. Moment's like these make us realize how truly special our lifestyle is, and we are so incredibly grateful to all of you for coming along on the journey with us!

Take advantage of our amazing holiday deals in the shop from now until Christmas! Head on over to SVDelos.com/shop and check it out!

Sandefjord - Her Voyage Around The World - Full Sailing Movie

The true story of five young men and a girl that set out to circumnavigate the Earth with Sandefjord, a fifty-year-old lifeboat. 1965 - 1966

Sandefjord was first launched in 1913, and during her 22 years of service for the Norwegian Lifeboat Society, she saved 117 lives and assisted 258 vessels through fog and storm to safety.

After being sold out of the lifeboat service in 1935, the ketch passed through a succession of owners, the last of whom all but abandoned her as a rotting hulk in Durban.

It was a desperately sad shadow of the once proud and gallant Sandefjord that was found, half sunk at her moorings, by the Durban brothers Barry and Patrick Cullen in 1963. The task of refitting her required almost two years of hard work before she was ready for sea. She was taken from the water, stripped of all doubtful planks and timbers, and slowly restored to a state of complete seaworthiness.

Finally, in February 1965, Sandefjord was ready. She was provisioned for 400 days and with her complement of five young men and a girl, she sailed from Durban on what proved to be her greatest adventure yet.

Through the West Indies, Panama Canal...and on into the mighty Pacific. Sandefjord made her landfalls in the exotic South Seas in much the same way as Cook and other early navigators. Without exception, she was well met at all her ports of call. She made friends easily...for herself and her crew...as loyal and devoted a crew as any ship could ever wish to have.

Sandefjord sailed 30,279 nautical miles in 21 months in this memorable circumnavigation, receiving a thrilling homecoming welcome in Durban, Tuesday, 8th November 1966.

Sailing Alone Across an Ocean on a 30ft Sailboat and Losing the Rudder 1000 Miles from Hawaii

Hello Friends,

This is the long format episode that chronicles my 32 day, 2300 nm passage from Los Angeles to Honolulu onboard my 1965 Alberg 30 sailboat SV TRITEIA.

1000 miles from Hawaii my rudder failed due to striking a submerged object (that was painted red). After failed attempts to secure the control lines to the rudder due to large seas and high winds I was forced to steer with a small Sea Squid drogue for 18 days.

Triteia is equipped with a vintage Sailomat Aux Rudder wind vane which helped a great deal but was far undersized compared to the large rudder attached to Triteia’s full keel. The Windvane started to fail internally soon after the rudder failure. I was able to make a makeshift tiller handle that allowed me to turn the boat to get it back on course but the self steering started popping out of gear and stopped working completely while I crossed the channel between Molokai and Oahu forcing me to sit on the transom and hand steer for the last 6 hours of this intense passage.

If you would like to read the twice + daily blog posts I made during the crossing you can find those here:

(update: Rudder Repaired May 2022 - )

MY SHORE TEAM!
A much needed shout out to my amazing Shore Team for this passage!

Some of you signed up by accidentally being related to me and the rest of you accidentally signed up because I love you, value your opinion and had your phone numbers.

David Frederick: My big brother and Executive Director of US Cyber Command for the NSA. David kept me safe with twice daily ship reports, checking on my mental health and used his army training to advise me about operating under fatigue and high stress.

Colby Thorp: My baby brother, a US marine and a padi certified search and rescue diver. Colby managed all of my accounts while I was away including the SOS email and secured a trailer for Triteia’s return trip. Thanks to his girlfriend Ashley for her help as well!

Sarah Koenig: A singer / Songwriter and One of my closet friends for the last 18 years. Sarah was only a message away with any questions I had, Google searches daily and kept my spirits up sharing all of the nice comments on Instagram and YouTube. She also looked into general delivery to Hawaii and called ahead to the Harbor Master in Oahu to confirm details for me.

Captain David Stovall: 200-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Screen writer and a Texan so we are likely kinfolk. Stovall keep me updated with ships if I had questions while my brother was at work. He helped me work out the drogue steering and called BoatUS trying to get me a tow into port.

Captain Noah Peffer: 50-Ton Masters Near Costal License Holder, Professor of Nautical Sciences, Artist and dear friend. I hold Noah’s opinion as gospel and he has saved my ass on the last two passages. He is the one I bug when I am terrified.

I also want to thank my little brother Scott for checking on me, My oldest friend (since 3rd grade) Chance everything and My Buddy Dane for always being there.

I can never repay you guys and I don’t know what I would have done without you all!

Forever in your debt !

The Sail That BROKE US ???? Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 446

Get Exclusive NordVPN New Year deal + 4 months extra here ➼ It’s risk-free with Nord’s 30-day money-back guarantee!

We were in for a RUDE AWAKENING ???? Our weather window to make our final shot towards the Marquesas Islands had finally arrived, and it was time to pull the hook and set off on our first multi day passage in a while. We knew it would be a bit of an uncomfortable sail, but something about this one just hit differently. Both of us were SO seasick (which for Kazza is fairly normal when it's rough out, but I very rarely get seasick) and just struggling super hard as we beat our way north. It's hard to capture on camera what it's really like, but its a feeling of just being miserable and there is no where to escape except to keep moving toward your destination. You are literally just trying to survive, the smallest tasks like going to the bathroom or making a cup of tea become a monumental effort...when you can barely take care of yourself, and you need to take care of another tiny human that is completely relying on you, it becomes even tougher. So clip in, and get ready to join us for a rough ride!

WHO ARE WE?
We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for almost a decade.
Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
Because... Life is an adventure!
Extraordinary moments out there for anyone willing, and wanting, to go after it. Ya know life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

About Us: The Sailing Family!

Welcome aboard our family-friendly adventure! We are a family of five sailing around the world on our dream boat, a performance cruising catamaran named Archer!

Twelve years ago, before kids, we sailed a Lagoon 380 named Honeymoon halfway around the world from the East Coast of the US to Sydney, Australia. Along the way we shared our experiences with family and by happenstance created one of the first sailing channels on YouTube. But more than anything, we realized what an incredible experience that first trip was and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids.

We want to share with them the importance of taking time to be with family. To show them a world outside of the one they grew up in. We want them to appreciate how lucky we are to experience the natural beauty of this world. But mostly we want to spend time with our kids during these formative years and create lasting memories as a family. That's why we are The Sailing Family!

Day 1 Sailing Around The World! [Ep1]

It's a really odd feeling when you leave your dock knowing your boat will not return unless you sail all the way around the world to get there. It's a combination of very exciting and scary at the same time. It's also quite normal feeling, like we're just going for a day sail - but also quite a relief that after years of planning, the day of our departure has finally arrived.

In this episode we check in on everyone's feelings and expectations. A small group of friends and family see us off the dock and we have one of our best nights ever at anchor. It was truly beautiful that evening, which helped all of us soak in the excitement for what lies ahead. What a wonderful world - to see!

A family sailing around the world, stop in the San Blas archipelago / MyBoat&I #1

Jean-Philippe, Maryline and their two daughters Chloé and Célia set out to sail around the world over four years ago. After having left the Port of Toulon, they crossed the Atlantic and have since covered over 6,000 nautical miles in their Fountaine Pajot catamaran, the Lavezzi 40 “Eclectik”. Today, during their extended stay in the San Blas archipelago, they describe their experience for us, life on board and how they are organising this lockdown period, with fishing, onboard school lessons, meetings and activities.
