FOOD & THINGS TO DO IN SOFIA CENTER | Sightseeing in the city | Bulgaria Travel Vlog

Sofia city center has some incredible food, things to do, sightseeing and attractions to see. This travel vlog shows Bulgaria and it's food... ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇

Sophia aka Sofia, is the largest city in Bulgaria and home to some amazing buildings, history and attractions. The city center is the best place to start on your sightseeing hunt and covers a good amount of the best things to do and what to see in Sofia.

Bulgarian food is incredible, but our priority was the traditional Bulgarian breakfast for the purpose of this vlog! Bulgaria has some delicious cuisine, but any country that eats dessert for breakfast is high on our list of things we have to try! Mekitsa in Sofia was a must taste! They call it food, we call it dessert :)

Bulgaria is an easy place to make a travel vlog, city centers like in Sophia make our job easy with deciding what to see. For the most part, the city offers incredible buildings, churches, ancient ruins and age old structures. To really tackle the larger things to do in Sofia you probably need to get out of the city and venture deeper into Bulgaria as a whole. In upcoming travel vlogs we'll also show the other main attractions a few hours away, known as top sightseeing stops, to add some contrast to the concrete of the city along with more food where we can.

Stay tuned for more Bulgaria and Sofia vlogs from in and around the city including a free food tour coming soon.

Number 6. RAKETA RAKIA BAR
Raketa Rakia Bar
Rakia is Bulgaria's most famous drink, and homemade bottles are often proudly shown off after every evening meal. Raketa Rakia Bar is a popular restaurant in the middle of the city that serves a wide range of local and international dishes. It is also a lively bar with the best selection of rakias in the city. With its quirky decor and shelves full of random memorabilia, Raketa has a cool, trendy vibe, but it's also bright, airy, and very laid-back.

Number 5. BITAKA FLEA MARKET
Bitaka Flea Market
Bitaka Flea Market, which is the largest bazaar in the area, is a great place to find strange and interesting souvenirs from Sofia. Bitaka is a treasure trove of interesting things, including cameras and other technology, toys and watches, jewelry, clothes, and old photos. The market is in the middle of town, next to the Aleksander Nevski Cathedral. Bitaka is open every weekend from early in the morning until late in the afternoon.

Number 4. ALEXANDER NEVSKY CATHEDRAL
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was once one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world and an amazing place to visit. It is built in the beautiful and intricate Neo-Byzantine style and is one of Sofia's most popular tourist spots. The cathedral is full of history and is an important symbol of Bulgaria's past. It was built in honor of St. Alexander Nevsky, a prince who was famous for his military victories over Germany and Sweden in the 1300s. Today, it is the official church of Bulgaria's head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Simeon Nikolov Dimitrov, who is a Neophyte.

Number 3. POD LIPITE TAVERN
Pod Lipite Tavern
The Pod Lipite Tavern is a rustic pub that has been around since 1926 and is one of the oldest restaurants and bars in Sofia. Famous Bulgarians like actress Elena Snezhina and writer Angel Karaliichev used to hang out there all the time. Pod Lipite uses traditional recipes and cooking methods to make hearty, homemade Bulgarian dishes with meat and dairy from the restaurant's own farm. It's a great place to try real Bulgarian food. Pod Lipite is one of the best places to eat in Sofia.

Number 2. BORISOVA GRADINA PARK
Borisova Gradina Park
For some fresh air and peace in the middle of the city, go to Borisova Gradina Park. The park was built in 1884 and was named for King Boris III of Bulgaria. It is split into three parts. Joseph Frei, Georgi Duhtev, and Daniel Neff, all successful and skilled gardeners, were in charge of each section. The park is a beautiful place to see Bulgaria's natural beauty. It has a lot of peaceful green spaces and tree nurseries, as well as a famously beautiful water lily lake. It is a great thing to do to relax a bit.

Number 1. THE NATIONAL PALACE OF CULTURE
The National Palace of Culture
The National Palace of Culture is a beautiful building in the middle of the city. It was built in 1981 as part of the celebrations for Bulgaria's 1300th birthday. The huge hexagonal building is mostly made of grass and concrete. It was designed by the famous Bulgarian architect Alexander Georgiev Barov, who was a popular artist in Bulgaria when it was a communist country. Today, the building and the gardens around it are interesting examples of socialist architecture from the past.

As you'll see in this video, there are absolutely NO shortage of things to do in Sofia Bulgaria. We absolutely loved our time in Sofia & can guarantee you'll love it as well. Come check out the best things to do in Sofia with us!

We kicked Sofia off with coffee & breakfast at a place called Rainbow Factory. This is consistently rated the highest among the coffee shops & breakfast spots in Sofia & it’s VERY convenient for us since our Airbnb is basically right above it.

Nearby is a historical site called St. George Rotunda. This church is located in the courtyard of the Government Office so you’ll be able to easily find it from the center of Sofia. It’s believed to be the oldest building in Sofia, dating back to the beginning of the 4th century AD during the reign of Constantine the Great. It’s currently operational as a temple & holds daily worship services of Byzantine music.

Also while you're over here, make sure to check out Sofia's most beautiful statue, Saint Sofia Monument!

Next up was the Sofia History Museum. It’s about a five minute walk from the Saint Sofia Monument & to that point, Sofia as a city is very walkable. Most stops today are within about 10 minutes of each other so you can see a ton within a few hours. The Sofia History Museum is located inside the former building of the Central Mineral Baths & is centered around the archeology, ethnography, & cultural history of Sofia. It holds over 120,000 historical objects, dating between 6th millenium BC up to the 1940s. The two-storied museum has eight halls, each focusing on different themed historical moments & periods during Sofia’s existence.

One of the top things to do in Sofia is to stroll down Vitosha Boulevard. This street is home to popular restaurants, shops, & provides an incredible view of the nearby Vitosha Mountain, which is where the street got its name from. We stopped to grab some barbecue at Ribs Brothers & it was great!

Next up on our things to do in Sofia was to head over to the City Garden. This is the oldest & most central public garden. It’s been around since 1872 & the locals love it. Also if you’re visiting the city park then make sure to check out the Ivan Vazov National Theater!

Without question, the top of the list of things to do in Sofia is to visit Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It’s a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral that serves as the seat of the country’s patriarch is named after Alexander Nevsky.

Next to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the Church of St. Nicholas the Miracle-Maker. It’s referred to in short as the Russian Church since it’s built in the traditional Russian style of domed towers & elaborate facades.

Next up on our list of things to do in Sofia was to get traditional Bulgarian food at a place called Moma. Make sure to stop there whenever you're visiting Sofia!

Sofia has a rapidly growing craft beer scene so we headed to a place called Vitamin B. We got some local beers and wrapped our day exploring Sofia in the best way possible.

Thanks so much for watching our vlog on the best things to do in Sofia! Please leave a LIKE if you enjoyed the video as it helps us tremendously, & be sure to subscribe to follow along! Thanks so much again and see you soon!

Final video of our Bulgaria travel series, we finish our hiking in the Bulgarian mountains. After this, we go and try some Bulgarian food before a travel day back to Sofia. The food in Bulgaria really surprised us, especially mishmash and shopska salad. Worth a try if you are in Bulgaria. We didn't get a chance to explore Sofia as Emma was sick from our travel day but we loved our time in Bulgaria. It was not what we were expecting but would love to return as it passed all expectations. Bansko, in particular, is a hiking paradise and would love to try it in the ski season.

In 2017 we left home with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a sustainable travel lifestyle happen! We are now living our dream as digital nomads and want to inspire you to create your own story, whatever it may be!

After 5 years of aimless, yet enjoyable, backpacking around the world we found ourselves in New York City battling with depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on. After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle.

Our time spent battling depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. In our vlogs, we talk openly and honestly about our travel experiences, the digital nomad life and depression. We hope our videos can help to inspire you to create a life that makes you happy!

SOFIA BULGARIA - My First Impressions on the City, Food and People:

Moldova is a small landlocked country nestled between Romania and Ukraine in Eastern Europe, boasts a rich history, diverse culture, and picturesque landscapes. Chisinau, the capital city, serves as the vibrant heart of this nation.

Moldova's terrain is predominantly rolling steppes, with fertile agricultural land. The country is known for its vineyards and winemaking traditions, with wine being a significant part of its cultural heritage.

Moldova has a complex history marked by influences from various empires and neighboring states. It was part of the Principality of Moldavia, then fell under Ottoman and Russian control before becoming part of the Soviet Union. Moldova gained independence in 1991 with the dissolution of the USSR.

Moldovan culture is a blend of Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, and other influences. The country celebrates traditional events like Moldovan Independence Day and various folk festivals. Traditional music, dance, and cuisine are also integral to Moldovan culture.

Moldova's economy relies heavily on agriculture, particularly wine production, as well as manufacturing and services. The country faces economic challenges, including corruption and emigration.

Chisinau is the largest city in Moldova and serves as its political, economic, and cultural center. It is located in the central part of the country, on the Bâc River.

Chisinau boasts a mix of architectural styles, reflecting its history under various rulers. Soviet-era buildings blend with neoclassical, art nouveau, and contemporary structures. The city's skyline is characterized by Orthodox churches, government buildings, and modern skyscrapers.

Chisinau offers a range of cultural attractions, including museums, theaters, and art galleries. The National Museum of History of Moldova, the National Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the Pushkin Museum are among the city's notable cultural institutions.

Chisinau is known for its abundance of parks and green spaces, earning it the nickname The Green City. The Valea Morilor Park, Stefan cel Mare Central Park, and Dendrarium Park are popular recreational areas where residents and visitors alike can relax and enjoy nature.

Chisinau's nightlife scene is vibrant, with numerous bars, clubs, and restaurants offering a taste of Moldovan cuisine and hospitality. Local specialties include mamaliga (a type of cornmeal porridge), placinte (stuffed pastries), and a variety of dishes featuring locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Chisinau and Moldova, in general, offer visitors a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making them intriguing destinations to explore in Eastern Europe.
