LOS ANGELES: We Expected A Homeless Wasteland, But It Was Beautiful (Traffic SUCKS, Though)

We visited Los Angeles, California, not sure what to expect. News sites continually report about the rampant homelessness and general dirty condition of the city. We didn't see any of that. The city was beautiful, although the horrid traffic ruins visiting. It's simply near impossible to get anywhere. That said, we read that most of the homeless population had been cleared out for the Super Bowl game right before the Super Bowl game between the LA Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals. Which would explain why we hardly saw any. And in all fairness, we did not go downtown.

We stayed at the Courtyard By Marriott Orange County.

How Los Angeles Gets Its Water: A Complete History of The Los Angeles Aqueduct

Completed on November 5, 1913, the 233-mile Los Angeles Aqueduct stretches all the way from California’s Owens Valley to the city of Los Angeles – delivering somewhere in the neighborhood of 260-millions gallons of water per day to a thirsty city. The aqueduct stands as a testament to early 20th-century engineering might, however, the project set off a decades-long civil war between Owens Valley farmers and Los Angeles. Built to meet the increasing demands of a rapidly growing city, the Los Angeles Aqueduct has a history plagued with deception, corruption, and death.

9:10 - Annexing the San Fernando Valley

13:37 - The worst American civil engineering disaster
15:00 - Long Valley Dam creates Lake Crowley
16:31 - LADWP compelled by a court order
17:27 - What now?

In this video, I break down the entire history of the Los Angeles Aqueduct and take a look at the three main people who made it happen: William Mulholland, Frederick Eaton, and Joseph “J.B.” Lippincott. The motivations and decisions of these three men from over 100 years ago allowed Los Angeles to support its exponential population growth, but not without deadly consequences. The St. Francis Dam, completed in 1926, was one of the crown jewels of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. However, just 2 years later in 1928, the dam catastrophically failed, killing at least 431 people. To this day, the St. Francis Dam disaster is considered the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century.

The Los Angeles Aqueduct allowed the city of Los Angeles to become the sprawling metropolis we know today, but the lingering sociopolitical and environmental impacts are hard to overlook.

IN THIS EPISODE: The creator of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, was so fascinated by the occult, he believed he was the actual devil himself… and was even upset when his own son turned out to not be the antichrist. (The Devil L. Ron Hubbard) *** Scientology is already scary and mysterious – which may not be surprising once you learn how much black magic had to do with its creation. (Scientology and the Occult) *** A house in the Altamaha River Swamp in Georgia becomes darker and more dangerous than the swamp itself. (A Terrifying Haunting in Georgia) *** Was a well known UFOlogist murdered shortly before a scheduled speech he was about to give? (The Bleached Computer of a UFO Researcher) *** Some believe we all have a guardian angel watching over us. One infamous yet respected witch hunter many years ago wrote that we all – each one of us – have a personal demon. And many people believed him. (The Demon Witch Hunter) *** For some time now, Area 51 has been seen as ground zero for conspiracies and government coverups. However, a plot of land in Utah has started to attract much of the same kind of attention. Welcome to Dugway – also known as Area 52. (Welcome to Area 52)

IN THIS EPISODE: Los Angeles is one of the world's most famous cities. It’s known for being the home of the rich and famous, the film and music industries, theme parks, beautiful warm weather, gorgeous beaches, and an active nightlife… but it’s also known for smog, skid row, and bad traffic. But one thing most people don’t immediately think of is the almost overwhelming number of ghosts and the city’s history of the occult. In this episode we’re going to look at L.A.’s haunted locations and famous ghosts, as well as look at how prevalent the occult was and possibly still is in the City of Angels.
