Extreme Airport Approach in Iceland! (HD)

Visual Approach Iceland Extreme Airport | Cockpit Dash 8

Isafjordur is an extreme airport as its located in a fjord which requires the pilot to fly his aircraft very close to the surrounding terrain then making a full 180 degree turn on final approach just before landing. AIR ICELAND is the only airline allowed to service this airport and pilots require special training to be allowed to fly into Isafjordur Airport.
The complete Flightdeck film is nearly 5 hours long and includes 10 flights within Iceland as well as to Greenland.

(NEW) Landing at Extreme Airport in Iceland #Isafjordur

This is backdoor approach into the infamous airport in Ísafjörður, Iceland. This is a rare approach as the normal approach is a 230 degree turn inside the fjord. As can be seen in my video here: The airplane is a Dash 8 -200 turboprop. #BIIS #extreme #landing

Extreme Approach into ISAFJORDUR

The approach into this airport requires you to fly close to the terrain and make a 180 degree turn at the end of the fjord making this a pretty challenging airport to fly into!

JustPlanes first filmed Air Iceland in 2004 and that included a flight into Isafjordur on the Fokker 50 films with one camera. Its such a challenging approach that we had to return and film it again in HD with half a dozen cameras! The full 275 minute film is available at

This is the famous airport in Isafjordur (BIIS) in west Iceland. This is an approach into the fjord. The U-turn approach I filmed in 2009 from the other direction can be seen below.

Landing on Runway 08 of Ísafjörður Airport (Isafjordur / Isafjördur - Iata-Code IFJ) in Iceland with a Bombardier Dash 8-200 of Air Iceland Connect. The airport is located at the end of a fjord surrounded by steep mountains. The most used approach consist of flying into the fjord, turning 180 degrees left and then landing on the short runway. Filmed in November 2018.

Extreme Fjord Airport Landing in Iceland: Ísafjörður (HD) - Iceland Travel Blog

We've spent some time in Ísafjörður later for our Iceland Travel Blog:

Little did we know that we would be returning after this extreme fjord airport landing in Ísafjörður. This was our first flight we've been invited to from our friend who lives in Iceland and was training to become a pilot. The video only partly transmits how exciting this landing was, but it was just amazing to fly into the fjord, do a 180 just to land on this tiny airstrip inside the fjord.

Most dangerous airports: Crazy landing into Ísafjörður, Iceland

Of the ten most dangerous airports in the world, to me Ísafjörður is #11, to say the least. Enjoy the scary flight into the fjord!

The small town is deep in the western fjords of Iceland. I arrived there by bus in the summer of 2013, just for a night. Understanding the location of the airport, I immediately grabbed my little hand-held camera when I saw a plane approaching. My position was almost ideal. Had I had a minute of preparation, I might even have avoided the car and the people. But anyway, I knew there was no second chance.

So, here it is: Mountains. The fjord. And the full approach of the evening plane from Reykjavik. Just watch the almost indecent descent!

And here is the magnificent view of the approach from the plane:

I stand on the inner side of the peninsula (although in Summer).

Iceland - Landing at Keflavík International Airport (2022)

Keflavík Airport (Icelandic: Keflavíkurflugvöllur) (IATA: KEF, ICAO: BIKF), also known as Reykjavík–Keflavík Airport, is the largest airport in Iceland and the country's main hub for international transportation. The airport is 1.7 nautical miles (3.1 kilometres) west of Keflavík[2] and 50 km (30 mi) southwest of Reykjavík. The airport has three runways, two of which are in use, and the airport area is about 25 km2 (10 sq mi).[citation needed] Most international journeys to or from Iceland pass through this airport.

The main carrier at Keflavík is Icelandair, which has the airport as its main hub. The airport is almost exclusively used for international flights; most domestic flights use the much smaller Reykjavík Airport, which lies three kilometres (two miles) from Reykjavík's city centre, although seasonal flights from Akureyri fly to Keflavík. Keflavík Airport is operated by Isavia, a government enterprise.
