Exploring Africa's Strangest Country (Djibouti)

Have you ever heard of the country called DJIBOUTI? If not, don't feel embarrassed... because it's a very tiny country in the Horn of Africa that gets minimal tourism -- roughly 70,000 visitors per year.

Over the last 2 days, I have explored every facet of the capital & biggest city called Djibouti City. I find this place to be the most interesting country in Africa.

Here are some of my quick realizations:

- It's VERY EXPENSIVE -- I have spent more than $400 in the last 2 days and I haven't done much other than walk around, take a few taxis, eat 4 meals & sleep (keep in mind my visa was $90 and my hotel was $105).

- Walking around the streets feels very much like France, from the colonization period that started in 1884 and ended in 1977. The people here speak French (first), Arabic (second) and English (third, if any at all).

- There is a LOT OF SECURITY everywhere -- police/military guards standing on every corner (literally) with giant guns strapped to their backs. It is kind of crazy and very intimidating, but safe.

- About a quarter of Djibouti's population (~250,000 people) are living in extreme poverty, which is more extreme than you'd think given that this country is so expensive. A massive contrast between rich & poor.

All of my thoughts on this mysterious country, and more, are in this video. Have you ever been to Djibouti?

About Djibouti
Welcome to the enigmatic land of Djibouti, a hidden gem nestled in the strategic crossroads of the Horn of Africa. Situated at the meeting point of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Djibouti's geographical significance transcends its modest size. This small nation holds the key to some of the world's busiest shipping lanes, making it a vital nexus for global trade and maritime activity.
Djibouti's importance is underscored by its role as a gateway between Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Its strategic location has not only attracted the attention of traders throughout history but has also led to the establishment of military bases by various international powers, further solidifying its geopolitical relevance. Despite its compact footprint, Djibouti's geopolitical and economic importance resonates far beyond its borders.
Internationally, Djibouti is gaining recognition for its contributions to regional stability and economic development. Its reputation as a key player in counterterrorism efforts, a host to foreign military installations, and an emerging economic hub has placed it firmly on the global stage. Join us as we delve into Djibouti's multifaceted tapestry, exploring its rich history, diverse geography, resilient people, intriguing facts, and evolving economy that continue to shape its intriguing narrative in today's interconnected world.

The History of Djibouti
The history of Djibouti is a tale that weaves together ancient cultures, colonial influences, and the quest for independence. Situated at the crossroads of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, Djibouti's strategic location made it a natural trading hub for centuries. It has seen the footprints of various civilizations, from the ancient Djiboutiians and Greeks to Arab merchants and Ottoman rulers, who recognized its significance as a gateway to the Red Sea.
The 19th century brought European colonial interests, with the French establishing a presence in the region. Djibouti became a French colony in 1888, known as French Somaliland. The colonial period saw the construction of infrastructure, including a railway connecting Djibouti to Ethiopia, further enhancing its role as a trade conduit. The 20th century brought turmoil, as Djibouti underwent periods of struggle for independence, finally achieving sovereignty in 1977 as the Republic of Djibouti.
In the decades since gaining independence, Djibouti has sought to harness its geographical significance for economic growth. The nation's ports and naval bases have made it a valuable partner in international trade and security efforts. Djibouti's history serves as a testament to its enduring resilience and its ability to navigate through the currents of changing powers, ultimately forging a distinct identity as a bridge between continents and cultures.

Exploring Lac Abbé in Djibouti

Exploring Lac Abbé in Djibouti, which has been named by Lonely Planet as one of their Best in Travel destinations of 2018. We visited in December 2017.

Lac Abbé was used as a location for the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. With its belching chimneys and steaming hot springs, the salt 'lake' is a suitably apocalyptic setting. It is located on the Ethiopian border in the west of the country. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon to witness the truly magical sunset.

Don't try to vlog in Djibouti (My experience in the most camera-phobic country I've ever visited) ????????

From Ethiopia, I headed north to the small nation of Djibouti, perched on the Red Sea & Gulf of Aden directly across from Yemen, on the horn of Africa. I had been so excited to begin my journey here - but my enthusiasm quickly faded when I realized that this is no country for a travel vlogger (I should have known this, given Drew Binsky's experiences here on his trip). Everywhere I turned, I was accosted by unfriendly, aggressive Police officers who resorted to intimidation and bribery in order for me to continue filming my experiences in the diminutive capital of Djibouti City.

The Djiboutian locals that I met were invariably kind and understanding - they being the unfortunate victims of their own corrupt police, which are highly averse to tourism and tourists in general. The constant threats of fines and possible jail time completely ruined my two days in this small nation. I am hopeful that, should the people of Djibouti demand it, the corruption that plagues the nation (and that causes tourists to flee) will be no more, and the nation would be a tourist-friendly haven in the horn of Africa. Until then, this country is best skipped by the solo traveler.

I mean no disrespect to the people of Djibouti - I sympathize with them that you Djiboutians to live in a country where the Police serve to ruin the nation's economy by driving tourism from their country. Please know, these are just my own experiences - others may experience something very different.
