The Sierra Nevada Mountains are located in eastern California and are part of the Rocky Mountains. The range runs 400 miles north-to-south and is 70 miles wide. The mountains are home to Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park. These parks are some of the most popular tourist destinations in California.

The mountains were created by the tectonic plates moving and colliding over millions of years. The mountains are made up of granite, making them some of North America's oldest rocks. The granite is resistant to weathering, which is why the mountains have been able to stay tall for so long.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains are a popular destination for hikers, climbers, and skiers. There are over 1,500 miles of hiking trails in the mountain range. Yosemite National Park has some of the most popular trails, including the Half Dome Trail and the John Muir Trail. The John Muir Trail goes for 211 miles from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States.

It is a popular destination for climbers. There are over 1,000 climbing routes in the range. Some of the most popular climbs are Half Dome in Yosemite National Park and El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Both climbs involve scrambling up a steep cliff using ropes and other climbing gear.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains are also a popular destination for skiers. There are over 2,000 miles of ski trails in the mountain range. The most popular ski resorts are located in Lake Tahoe, which is on the border of California and Nevada.

Exploring California's Highway 39 - Closed For Over 40 Years

California State Route 39 as it heads into the mountains north of Azusa has been called California's Forbidden Highway or California's Forgotten Highway, as the last four and a half miles of it have been closed since 1978, preventing it from connecting with State Route 2. Because of the closure and dead end, the road sees very little traffic, despite being only miles from the second largest city in the United States.

In this video, we drive up the road through the Angeles National Forest (the same road part of Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was filmed on) and check out what there is to see along the way. We then explore the section of road that has been closed for over 40 years, a road that was once considered one of the most scenic in California.

For another look at Highway 39, check out this video on the road by Roaming Benji:

Chasing Down The Out-Of-The-Way Gold Mines Of The Sierra Nevadas

We’ve been hitting the deserts, mountains, jungles (and more) pretty hard over the past months to find the most unique, interesting abandoned mine sites that we can for you… Given the growing public interest in mine exploration and the determination of various federal agencies to eliminate these same historical mines, we must increasingly get to the most out-of-the-way mines that we can to find the real treasures. Really, that serves as a metaphor for many things in life!

The summer season is a busy one for the TVR crew as that is when we accumulate much of our content. The winter weather prevents us from exploring much of the Sierra Nevadas and much of the desert regions of Nevada and elsewhere. Yes, those desert regions are desert, but they are HIGH desert, which means that they are subjected to much of the same extreme weather that blocks us in the mountains. Thus, our winter trips are often restricted to places like Tombstone in Arizona. I have been chatting with the lads with QLD Abandoned Mines in Australia though and they have extended an invitation to come down and explore Australian mines with them. Visiting the southern hemisphere during winter in the northern hemisphere would certainly solve the trouble with the limited abandoned mine access of winter…

Having just returned from two serious back-to-back mine exploring trips, I can assure you that there is a lot of good stuff sitting on the hard drive, waiting to be edited. I look forward to getting it out to you. I hope that you also enjoy the videos, such as this one, of the smaller mines and the things that we find along the way while we are hunting the big mines.

*****

You can see the full TVR Exploring playlist of abandoned mines here:

You can see the gear that I use for mine exploring here: and here:

Several kind viewers have asked about donating to help cover some of the many expenses associated with exploring these abandoned mines. Inspired by their generosity, I set up a Patreon account. So, if anyone would care to chip in, I’m under TVR Exploring on Patreon.

Thanks for watching!

*****

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.

These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.
I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

Solo Hiking in the John Muir Wilderness | Sierra Nevada Mountains , California

Emerald Lake is an easy 1.5-mile trail that starts out of the Coldwater Creek Campground and is an out-and-back type trail. The trail to Emerald Lake winds uphill along a beautiful creek with only about 450 feet of elevation gain. I started this hike at Twin Lakes, road walked up to lake Mary and headed up through Coldwater campground to begin the hike.
