Antarctic Cruise with Aaron Strahlke, Geologist, Faces of the Polar World
Antarctica is a must on every adventurer’s bucket list. North Pole: Polar bears and cubs with Poseidon Expeditions
To see a polar bear in the wild is at the top of many people’s must-do lists. Svalbard and Franz Josef Land are two of the very best places to find polar bears in their natural habitat. In these High Arctic territories, polar bears can be seen engaging in natural behaviors such as stalking seals on sea ice, caring for their cubs, roaming across the vast tundra wilderness, and perhaps devouring a whale or walrus carcass. Remarkably close viewing can sometimes be had from the ship or on a Zodiac cruise. However, close encounters with polar bears on land must certainly be avoided. Antarctic cruise with Andrew Wenzel, Whale Researcher, Faces of the Polar World
There are few wildlife experiences as exhilarating as an encounter with a whale. Now add the beauty of the pristine polar environment and you have something truly amazing. In an expedition cruise to the Arctic or Antarctica, you can observe whales from the ship or small Zodiac boats, or even from a kayak. Arctic Cruise with Kari Herbert, Travel Writer, Faces of the Polar World
When we ask our passengers what was the highlight of their Arctic expedition cruise, the answers vary. Some name amazing nature, some - abundant wildlife, and others - polar history. There are no rights or wrongs: when all of these elements combine, the Arctic is born, diverse, pristine and divergent.
On Arctic cruises with Poseidon Expeditions, we travel to different destinations in search of different things. There are places like Spitsbergen where the flowering tundra meets the rugged mountain landscapes and the snowy desert. Or Greenland, where the northern lights make for the most epic polar scenes. There are also places steeped in history, like Franz Josef Land, which are the most exciting to visit.

Arctic Cruise with James Balog, Photographer, Faces of the Polar World
Arctic and North Pole expedition cruises are rare opportunities to visit the remote northern reaches of our planet. While the main purpose of our cruises is taking you to extraordinary places and giving you a chance to explore the polar regions, we at Poseidon Expeditions also understand the opportunities these cruises give to scientists, historians and researchers from all over the world. They are united by a passion for the Arctic, and a desire to keep it pristine for as long as possible.
On this Arctic cruise, we were joined by James Balog, experienced nature photographer and producer of 'Chasing Ice', the award-winning documentary on climate change. With the Extreme Ice Survey project, he has been monitoring the state of sea ice for more than 10 years with time-lapse cameras. The Arctic glacial ice is receding dramatically, according to Balog. He considers it a sure sign of global warming making its way to the polar regions.
As worrying as the climate change signs may seem, James is optimistic and hopeful that the raising awareness among people of all nations means we will be able to keep the Arctic pristine for future generations.
