MOROCCO TRAVEL DOCUMENTARY | The Grand Moroccan Roadtrip

► ITINERARY + GPS TRACKS -
► SUPPORT - 'Buy us a refill of diesel' -

Follow us on our Grand Moroccan Roadtrip!
From sweeping sand dunes to desolate highways of emptiness, bustling cities, and snow-covered peaks, we explored Morocco from north to south and east to west. Driving more than 10,000 km in eight weeks, our roadtrip included many unforgettable adventures. Watch as we explore remote landscapes, climb high peaks, battle breath-taking dust-topias (double pun, yeah!), and navigate the hectic bustle of Morocco’s major cities.

Thank you:
A big THANK YOU goes to Saloua Dabhi who helped tremendously with pronouncing Moroccan names. Additionally, we’d like to thank Christina Neumann ( for her insights into correctly identifying many bird species. And, of course, a big thank you to La Sultana ( for welcoming us to both of their wonderful properties.

Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.

Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.

Full Disclosure:
This trip was entirely self-funded. However, we did enjoy a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Oualidia and a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Marrakech.

BEST Sahara Desert Morocco Experience | Overnight in Merzouga

Welcome again! In my previous videos I showed you Marrakech and some towns. Today, we entered the deepest part of Morocco, reaching the Sahara desert. It was so magical. I'd never seen sand so orange. And of course, we will continue to explore flavours that are very different from the ones we know and that I loved. So, grab something to drink and keep watching.

I was getting more and more excited to get to the desert and it seemed that the moment would never come. Finally they told us that we would make one last stop in the city of Erfoud, the last city before the desert. There we could find one of the best dates and sweets in the country.

I decided to keep the balls as a gift to my family but I couldn't resist eating the dates. The closer we got to the desert the landscape changed from rocky to sandy, and we finally reached the desert. The Berbers helped us mount a camel to start our adventure.
It was an incredible landscape. There was absolutely nothing. It is impossible to describe it with words.

Despite the silence of the Sahara, I was overwhelmed by the power of the dunes that were around us.

After a lot of free time, we rode camels again to reach the Berber camp. After eating, we all gathered around a campfire for some traditional Berber music.

I couldn't record much because we were so tired, but that's what camp was like. We went to a high dune to receive the sunrise very early in the morning. This is me running with a very strange outfit but enjoying my last moments in this paradise.

It was time to go back to Marrakech again and we stopped to eat in a place where I discovered a new food: pasta with sugar and cinnamon. Later they told me that there was a very typical and delicious pomegranate juice. I have to say that I felt cheated because it was like a yogurt kind of drink and I'm not a big fan. But if you like liquid yogurt you will like it.

Our journey continued and we saw many things, such as this sheep, which is obviously the cutest sheep in the world.

Finally we arrived at our accommodation. This time we did not stay in a hotel but in a Riad. They welcomed us with delicious Moroccan tea and typical sweets. A traditional Moroccan Riad is a home with multiple floors centered around a fountain or a pool. Riads were once the places where the wealthiest citizens lived and they are a part of traveling to Morocco. No visit to the country is complete without staying in one.

Breakfast at the Riad was freshly made and delicious. We enjoyed our last moments before going downtown to buy gifts. As it was our last hours in the country, we decided to have a second breakfast to eat the Moroccan pancakes with peanut butter that I liked so much.

And well... the worst moment of any trip arrived, the time to leave. We took a taxi for €10 that dropped us off at the airport and we took our first flight to Spain.

Well, as you can see I bought a lot of small things that people forget in a week too.

Silent Hiking & Wild Camping in Morocco | Atlas Mountains

I spent the first part of my time hiking and wild camping in the south of Morroco exploring the Tafraout Valley, in the heart of the Anti-Atlas mountain range. Morocco has a fantastic and diverse wilderness where you can really feel ‘off the grid’ if you travel to the right areas. The town of Tafraout is a well-known ‘base-camp’ for climbers, runners and walkers hiking in the Anti-Atlas mountains. The Atlas Mountains are actually more northeast in Morocco. The hike starts at Marac Telecom in Tafraout and past a couple of carpet sellers on the outskirts of town. I picked up the trail through the village of Tazga and passed the Ancient Berber House which has a fantastic museum, and relies purely on donations. The day after I visited and the outside temperature was between 30-35 degrees but the thick mud and stone internal walls inside were ice cold. Down the valley was some ancient rock art with a ‘mouflon’ or sheep colloquially known as the ‘Tezekkas Gazelle’. I headed over a ridge and down into the Blue Rocks Valley with the first glimpses of the ‘Painted Rocks’ or Les Roches Peints - also known as the Blue rocks. They are truly bizarre but a real feature on the landscape. Apparently in 1984 a a Belgian Artist decided to coat some boulders with 18 tennis of paint with the help of the local first service - its a bit of a ‘Marmite’
Feature for people - some folk love them, some see them as sacrilege and an act of pure vandalism. ….

Once through the Valley I headed along the Air Mansour road and up a long valley through to Ayerd. It was actually fairly slow going on account of the heat and evening crept up on me. I decided to camp up on the Ridgeline that continues though to Adrar Mqorn, a stunning spot with a view of the valley and the changing climactic conditions of the night.

I camped under an overcast sky and the wind crept up overnight. I was really lucky to warm myself with a fire into the night, and ensured it was dealt with properly and extinguished. Sometimes a good fire can warm the soul especially when you’re on your own and far from home and those you love. My Real Turmat meal certainly kept me warm. I was hoping for some opportunities for Astrophotography overnight but the sky wasn’t perfect, but got a couple of Timelapse’s nevertheless.

Coming back the next day through the painted rocks the conditions were perfect.

I have included a link below to the route on AllTrails if anyone would like to have a go at it.

How to get a visa for Morocco? On the ferry is a small office which will give you a 3 month visa to enter Morocco. You can extend the visa for another three monthes in Morocco.

Is wild camping allowed in Morocco? is a question we get frequently asked. And yes, wild camping is allowed in Morocco. Only if there is a sign 'do not camp' you are not allowed to wild camp.

How to have internet in Morocco? You can buy a Maroc Telecom simcard when arriving in Marocco for a few dirham (around €2,-). Internet in Morocco is good and cheap and you will have internet almost everywere.

Does GoogleMaps work in Morocco? It does, but the turn-by-turn navigation is not working. So choose an offline navigation is our advice.

How safe is Morocco 2020? We felt super safe during our 2,5 month road trip through Morocco and didn't experience any negative things. Just respect the country rules and people and use your common sense.

Is it safe to travel Morocco with your campervan? We think it one of the nicest countries to road trip with you campervan. You will find a lot of places to wild camp, plenty of watertaps for drinking water and super friendly people who like to help you when needed.

Getting into morocco with a campervan is not a problem. You just book a ferryticket for your van, take your car papers with you and the custom will give you a car registration card. Keep that card with you when travelling and you will be fine.

MOROCCO | Morocco's best guide 2023: Agadir, Mhamid, Merzouga, Ait Ben Haddou, Marrakesh

Welcome to our luxury travel couple's adventure in Morocco! In this first part of our journey, we spent the first 5 days exploring the stunning beauty of this North African country. Our journey started in Agadir, where we rented a car and spent the first night in the city before heading out to explore.

We visited the Agadir souk and medina, where we immersed ourselves in the vibrant culture of Morocco. Afterward, we embarked on a nine-hour drive to Mhamid, where we were picked up by our driver to take us to Umnya, the luxury desert camp. The camp is located in the middle of the Sahara desert, and we were amazed by its epic, magical, and mystical beauty. We enjoyed camel riding, sandboarding, and delicious local cuisine while we were there. We also took some time to create unique content for our Instagram account.

Our experience at Umnya was unforgettable, and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for a secluded and unique experience in the desert. After two days, we traveled to Merzouga, a town famous for its stunning sand dunes. We stayed at the Riad Serai, a luxurious accommodation situated on the outskirts of the Merzouga dunes. During our stay, we visited Sunrise Palace, a unique accommodation with the most unique pool we've ever seen.

We then went camel riding through the desert to the Caravan Serai Camp, the first luxury camp in Morocco, where a famous Chinese series was filmed. We had the chance to enjoy green tea on the dunes while admiring the stunning beauty of the desert. We also had the opportunity to spend the night with the local Berber people from the Ait Atta tribe.

Our next stop was Ait Ben Haddou, where we enjoyed the sunset and sipped tea on the terrace cafe at the top. Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been used as a filming location for many popular movies and TV shows.

Our first part of the journey ended with a drive across Morocco to Marrakesh, stopping along the way at the Todra Gorges, where we enjoyed the clean water and views of the canyon. We can't wait to share the second part of our journey with you!

We live to discover! #GOBACKPACK2022 in Morocco | Jack Wolfskin

Our three-week adventure in Morocco is over. Together we have discovered beautiful places and met remarkable people.

The #GOBACKPACK trip has taught us many things. During this journey, our adventurers did not only experience Morocco but also got to know a new side of themselves. But what did we want to accomplish with GOBACKPACK?

First and foremost, we wanted to give our creators a trip filled with exploration, nature, and people. We only have one planet. It is essential to respect and appreciate it.
One of the best ways to discover our planet (which we highly recommend): is in a lively group of curious people willing to fully open their hearts and minds to the extraordinary country of Morocco!

Being able to explore the freedom in the outdoors deeply connected us all! Through GOBACKPACK, not only a community has been built but especially many friendships. Our adventurers have gone to their limits while hiking, biking and climbing – sometimes even beyond. Due to the amazing nature discoveries and authentic experiences with Moroccan locals, emotions ran high. There even have been tears of complete and utter joy and appreciation for being in this moment – having the opportunity of this experience – and bonding with some of the most amazing human-beings around a campfire.

So what was #GOBACKPACK?
An experience and a passion for deepening our freedom outside. A journey to the self and us. A campfire with friends. The enjoyment of local hospitality. A cross-cultural exchange. The urge to wander and discover the most beautiful places. The search for harmony with nature. The will to be curious and to grow beyond yourself.

Traveling and discovering the outdoors is for everyone! We learn something new every day! When one adventure ends, another one is just around the corner. That's what #GOBACKPACK stands for, and that's what we stand for at Jack Wolfskin:
WE LIVE TO DISCOVER!

We will protect 3,000 m2 of forest for the next 50 years. In doing so, we significantly bind more than 10 tons of CO2 during this period, thus, compensating for our CO2 emissions throughout our trip. At the same time, we contribute to preserving old pristine forests, including its biodiversity.
