PORI, FINLAND | Exploring Finland’s West Coast
PORI, FINLAND: A day trip from Tampere to Pori - a city situated on Finland’s West Coast. I spent a few hours walking around the city centre, church, waterfront, old houses & parks - come & see for yourself.

I took a ninety minute train journey from Tampere all the way over to the West Coast of Finland where I discovered Pori - a small city that’s been rebuilt nine times over the centuries. I started off in the city centre where I spotted a local market in the market square selling lots of fruit, vegetables and snacks. This part of Pori is modern with lots of relatively new buildings, however I did manage to find some slightly older houses and a town hall hiding nearby.
After finding the waterfront and imagining what it would be like on a warm Summer’s day I walked over to Pori Central Church where I learned about the unusual iron spire, photographed the sculptures lining the walls of the cemetery and walked through a well-kept memorial garden.
When I heard that Pori had burned down nine times I had to find out why - I got my answer whilst visiting the oldest parts of the city where the streets are still made up of old wooden buildings. As devastating as nine fires must have been there was still one Finnish city that burned down more often!
From the old colourful wooden houses to a more modern area of Pori, I walked past high rise apartment blocks until I reached the Pori Water Tower and historic Käppärä Cemetery which contains the country’s most famous Mausoleum. My next task was to cross the Kokemäen River and see the parks and beaches of Kirjurinluoto - a place that provides some wonderful views back across towards central Pori. I had seen a photo of an anchor positioned on a tiny corner of land in the park overlooking the river and city beyond - my final goal was to find it and enjoy the view.

Walking in Pori Finland - Summer Morning Walk in the City Center (Aug 2021)
(4K) Friday Morning Walk in the City Center of Pori, Finland. Pori is a city located on the west coast of Finland 110 kilometers from Tampere and 140 kilometers from Turku. It is the capital of Satakunta region and the 10th largest city in Finland. It was established in 1558 by Duke John of Finland.

This walk starts at the Market Square, makes a stroll in the city center via the pedestrian streets, continues to the shore of Kokemäenjoki river and ends in front of Central Pori Church.

Pori (Swedish: Björneborg) is a city and municipality on the west coast of Finland. Pori literally means 'Bear City'. The name comes from the -borg part (meaning citadel, fortress or castle) of the original name in Swedish with a Fennicised pronunciation. Pori was established in 1558 by Duke John, who later became King John III of Sweden. The city has a population of 83,171 (28 February 2023) and it is the 10th largest city in Finland, and the 7th largest urban area. Pori is especially known nationwide for its Jazz Festival, Yyteri's sandy beaches, Kirjurinluoto, Porin Ässät ice hockey club, FC Jazz football club, which won two championships in the Veikkausliiga in the 1990s, and Pori Theater, which is the first Finnish-language theater in Finnish history. Pori is also known for its local street food called porilainen. During its history, the city of Pori has burned down nine times; only Oulu has burned more often, as many as ten times.

Aufgrund der aktuellen Corona-Situation haben wir beschlossen, auch unseren Urlaub hier in Finnland zu verbringen. Auf unserer Rundreise an Finnlands Westküste sind wir von Kanta-Häme über Uusikaupunki, Rauma und Luvia nach Pori gefahren. In #Pori haben wir unsere Ferienwohnung bezogen und uns auf Erkundungsreise rund um Pori gemacht. Wir haben folgende Ort besucht: Pori City, Kokenmänjoki, Kirjurinluoto, Yyteri mit Strand und Nationalpark, Kallo und Reposaari.
Pori ist ein Paradies für Familien, mit Jazzfestival, Strand, Stadtparks und jede Menge weiterer Ausflugsziele ist für jeden etwas dabei. In der Region gibt es zahlreiche Arten von Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten, seien es die belebte Innenstadt oder die Ruhe der Küste.
