El Faro Los Morrillos ~ CABO ROJO Lighthouse ~ Best UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

Faro de Los Morrillos is the most beloved landmark in the municipality of Cabo Rojo.  Commonly known as “El Faro”, it is located at Los Morrillos Peninsula perched on commanding limestone cliffs that drop 200 feet into the Caribbean Sea.  Los Morrillos Lighthouse was the second lighthouse built by the Spanish in Puerto Rico, construction began in 1887 and completed 1882.  The lantern room was constructed out of cast iron, copper and glass.  The interior served as a home for the keeper and the family.  All the walls were built with brick and mortar.  Los Morrillos Lighthouse is one of the 27 sites.

Lighthouse lovers will enjoy the simplicity and elegance of the structure.  In 2002 a three million dollar restoration was initiated, and in 2007 it was re-opened to the public.  The lighthouse got a brand new coat of paint in the original colors of gray with white trim;  a punch of color was added to the windows and doors in lime green.  The lighthouse is fully automated, still shines brightly helping ships navigate safely through the Mona Passage.

Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico - El Faro Lighthouse

The lighthouse in Cabo Rojo is one of many historical landmarks in Puerto Rico, and makes for a wonderful day trip, especially when paired with a day of sun, sand, and turquoise waters at La Playuela Beach.

Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico

Located at the southwestern tip of the island of Puerto Rico, the Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo was constructed in 1882 in order to guide passing ships through the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the treacherous Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse is located over a white lime cliff which is surrounded by salt water lagoons and marshes. The cliffs surrounding the lighthouse drop over 200 feet into the ocean. I spent a couple of hours there with my Lumix GH4 and a few good lenses. Enjoy...

History
The area near Las Salinas (salt flats) has been inhabited since 30 BC and AD 120 according to archaeological evidence. Punta Ostiones, listed in the National Register of Historic Places as an archeological site, was home to a large group of Archaic Indians.[2]

Despite the threat of pirates and natives, the Spanish settled the area of Los Morrillos around 1511. By 1525, salt mining was an important industry in the area. In 1759 the first request to establish itself as a town was denied. Cabo Rojo was founded on December 17, 1771 by Don Nicolás Alfonso Ramírez de Arellano y Martínez de Matos, a descendant of Spanish royalty and nobility, with the approval of Governor and Captain General Miguel de Muesas. According to Fray Iñigo Abbad y Lasierra by the end of the 18th century,[citation needed] Cabo Rojo had a population of 1,215 people.[when?]

Cabo Rojo (Red Cape in English) derives its name from both the reddish color of its salt-flats and the reddish tint that characterizes the seaside cliffs along its southern coast. According to legend, the name was given by Christopher Columbus himself. The first church, founded in 1783, was called San José. The present-day main Catholic church is called San Miguel Arcángel Church located in the town's square.

Geography
The Municipality of Cabo Rojo[3] lies on the southern-west corner of the island of Puerto Rico, on the Western Coastal Plains. It is bordered by Mayagüez and Hormigueros to the north, San Germán and Lajas to the east, the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Mona Passage to the west. Cabo Rojo has a surface area of 72 square miles (187 km2).

Cabo Rojo's terrain is plain. However, some notable peaks are Mariquita, Buena Vista, Vargas, and Peñones de Melones.

Seq_Los Morrillos Lighthouse: Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico

The Morrillos lighthouse is located south of the town of Cabo Rojo and illuminates the southwest corner of the island. The neo-classical style structure dates to 1882 and is classified as a third-order lighthouse with a reach of 18 miles from its white light and a period of one minute. The original plans show that the structure is very similar to the lighthouses of Arecibo and Cabezas de San Juan in Fajardo. It was the third one built under the Spanish government's master plan for lighthouses. Source:

Cabo Rojo Lighthouse, Puerto Rico

Located on top of 200-foot limestone cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the Cabo Rojo Lighthouse (Faro Los Morrillos de Cabo Rojo) is located on the southwestern tip of Puerto Rico. The lighthouse was built in 1882 by the Spanish government in order to guide passing ships through the southeast entrance from the Caribbean Sea through the treacherous Mona Passage into the Atlantic Ocean.
My family and I had a few afternoon hours to kill on our recent trip to Puerto Rico so we drove down there from Rincón to take in the absolutely breathtaking views. Shot with the Panasonic GH2 and Olympus M Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 lens - enjoy the video.

Faro Los Morrillos (lighthouse) & Playa Sucia, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico (Must Visit!)

What started as a rainy day ended up being a beautiful sunny day at Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico (west coast). I went to Faro Los Morrillos which is a light house just off the coast, surrounded by beautiful cliffs and blue waters. I also went and relaxed at Playa Sucia (translates to: Dirty Beach, but there is absolutely nothing dirty about this beach). White sands and crystal clear waters. Took several photos which you can check out on my Instagram @Rams.VnP.

Definitely a must visit/see in Puerto Rico!
