alexandria sarcophagus Mystery black tomb opened in Alexandria

alexandria sarcophagus Mystery black tomb opened in Alexandria
Could it contain the remains of ancient Greek leader Alexander the Great, or (less appealingly) a deadly curse?

According to experts who have now unsealed it, it's a no to both.

Instead, it revealed three skeletons and red-brown sewage water, which gave off an unbearable stench.

Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities had appointed a committee of archaeologists to open the relic, which was unearthed at a construction site.

According to Egyptian news outlet El-Watan, they initially lifted the lid of the tomb by just 5cm (2 inches) before the pungent smell forced them from the inspection scene entirely. They later prised it open with help from Egyptian military engineers.

We found the bones of three people, in what looks like a family burial... Unfortunately the mummies inside were not in the best condition and only the bones remain, said Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
Are mummies' tombs dangerous?
Scientists have debunked the infamous Mummy's Curse, but are there other threats in ancient tombs?

Lord Carnarvon, financial backer of the excavation of Tutankhamun's burial site, died from an infected mosquito bite shortly after they opened the chamber in 1923.

Since then, rumours have swirled that mould or bacteria survived in the sealed area and caused or contributed to his fate.

But F DeWolfe Miller, professor of epidemiology at the University of Hawaii, told National Geographic that there's no real danger.

We don't know of even a single case of either an archaeologist or a tourist experiencing any negative consequences [from bacteria or tomb moulds], he told the magazine.

Experts have said the three individuals in the Alexandria sarcophagus may have been soldiers in the time of the Pharaohs.

The skull of one is said to show cracks which point to an arrow injury.

The huge sarcophagus weighs almost 30 tonnes
The structure is almost two metres (6.5ft) high and three metres long, and is the largest of its kind ever found intact.

It weighs in at 27 tonnes (59,500lb), and is believed to date from the early Ptolemaic period, which began in 323 BC after the death of Alexander the Great.

Archaeologists will now study the sarcophagus in depth to pinpoint when its occupants lived, and how they died.

Ancient Egyptian Sarcophagus

Ancient Egyptian Sarcophagus is a carved, usually a stone container that usually houses a coffin and an Egyptian mummy. The word 'sarcophagus' is derived from Greek words sarx meaning flesh, and phagien meaning to eat derived from a Greek word for flesh-eating.

The name sarcophagus was eventually applied to stone coffins in general which were not sunk underground. The Egyptian interpretation of the word was the 'possessor of life' which related to the Egyptian beliefs of afterlife and rebirth. A sarcophagus is a funeral receptacle for a corpse, the plural of which is a sarcophagi.

The most terrifying place in Palermo Sicily, The Capuchin Catacombs - Mummy of Rosalia Lombardo

IN SICILY, WHERE THE RELATIONSHIP between the living and the dead has always been strong, the city of Palermo hosts one of the world’s more bizarre and morbid tourist attractions. Through the doors of the Capuchin Monastery, which looks like any other building from the outside, visitors can descend into the large Capuchin catacombs.

Pinned to the walls, sitting on benches and shelves and tucked away in open coffins are nearly 8,000 corpses, each one dressed in their Sunday best. In most of Western culture, the long-dead are generally kept out of sight, hidden from the living. Here, it is the exception. Nothing stands between the living and dead, except maybe a rope with a sign asking visitors to be respectful.

The conservation status of the countless corpses exposed make the cemetery of the Convent of the Capuchin Friars, known as the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, one of the most impressive places to visit in the world.

A macabre spectacle that brings out the uses, customs and traditions of the Palermo society from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century.

City of Dead || Catacombe dei Cappuccini

#Palermo's #Capuchin #monastery outgrew its original cemetery in the 16th century and monks began to excavate crypts below it. In 1599 they mummified one of their number, the recently-deceased brother Silvestro of Gubbio, and placed him in the catacombs.[citation needed]

#Bodies were #dehydrated on racks of #ceramic pipes in the catacombs and sometimes later washed with vinegar. Some bodies were embalmed and others were enclosed in sealed glass cabinets. Friars were preserved with their everyday clothing and sometimes with ropes they had worn in penance.
#Initially the catacombs were #intended only for #deceased friars. However, in later centuries it became a status symbol to be entombed in the Capuchin catacombs. In their wills, local luminaries would ask to be preserved in certain clothes, or even have their clothes changed at regular intervals. Priests wore their clerical vestments, while others were clothed according to contemporary fashion. Relatives would visit to pray for the deceased and to maintain the body in presentable condition.[citation needed]
The #catacombs were maintained through donations from the relatives of the deceased. Each new body was placed in a temporary niche and later placed into a more permanent location. So long as contributions continued, the body remained in it's proper place but if relatives stopped sending money, the body was put aside on a shelf until they resumed payments.
n 1871 Brother Riccardo was the last friar interred in the catacombs, but other famous people were interred after that. The catacombs were officially closed in 1880 but tourists continued to visit. The last burials are from the 1920s and 1930s. Among the final interments was #Rosalia Lombardo, then nearly two years old, whose body remains remarkably intact, preserved with a procedure performed by Professor Alfredo #Salafia. His process included formalin to kill bacteria, alcohol to dry the body, glycerin to keep it from over-drying, salicylic acid to kill fungi, and the most important ingredients, zinc salts (zinc sulfate and zinc chloride) to give the body rigidity.[1][2] The formula is one part glycerin, one part formalin saturated with both zinc salts, and one part of an alcohol solution saturated with salicylic acid.[citation needed] The final burial was that of Giovanni Licata di Baucina, the count of Isnello, in 1939.[3]

The catacombs contain about 8,000 corpses and 1,252 mummies (as stated by last census made by EURAC in 2011) that line the walls. The halls are divided by category: men, women, virgins, children, priests, monks, and professionals. Some bodies are better preserved than others. Some are set in poses; for example, two children are sitting together in a rocking chair. The coffins were accessible to the families of the deceased so that on certain days the family, including the deceased, could join their hands in prayer.[citation needed]
