CHEAP EATS Kuala Lumpur | DIY Food Tour

Today is our first and only full day in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and we will be taking ourselves on a DIY Cheap Eats Food tour!

We are here on a long layover and will be continuing on to Bali tomorrow. With that, we want to make the most of our 1 day here and for us, this means focusing on the food!

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia and from what we understand, it is a melting pot of different cultures. Similar to the food culture in Singapore, there is a lot of influence from other neighboring countries so we are very excited to try many different things today.

We start out at a local spot that serves Nasi Lemak which is Malaysia’s national dish. While this can be eaten all throughout the day, it is a very popular breakfast dish so we make it our first stop. Nasi Lemak is a coconut rice dish and there are many different side options you can choose to accompany it. We must look confused while going through the line and a very sweet restaurant employee steps in and helps us with our order. To make things even better, a local lady behind us in line ends up paying for our meal which is incredibly unexpected and so sweet.

Our day is off to a great start and after enjoying our breakfast, we continue on! Next up we head to the Petronas Twin Towers. These were once the tallest buildings in the world and still remain the world’s tallest twin structures. The buildings are very impressive and beautiful and we enjoy the views from a nearby park.

For lunch, we head to the Lot 10 Food Court which is comprised of some of Malaysia's best hawker stalls. We try a few different things including Penang Asam Laksa, Fried Kuey Teow and Pure White Coffee. After we get our fill, we head back to our guesthouse to do some planning for our upcoming time in Bali.

We venture back out and check out the Central Market. We do a quick walk through and head to the Petaling Street Market because we are after Hokkien Mee Noodles. This is another one of Malaysia’s most famous dishes. It’s noodles in a soy + mushroom sauce with pork belly pieces and cabbage. We go to the Kim Lian Kee stall which is coined as the birthplace of Hokkien Mee in Kuala Lumpur.

While this doesn't exactly match up with our cheap eats agenda, we head to the Sky Bar which has the most amazing view of the Petronas Towers and the skyline. We enjoy a couple drinks as the sky grows dark the city lights up.

Our last stop for the day is the Jalan Alor Night Market. We have now been in mainland SE Asia for over 3 months and there is something we have frankly been avoiding...but tonight is the night! We plan to finally try durian!

Durian is a controversial food that is native to Southeast Asia. It's smell is so bad that it has been banned on airplanes, trains and mass-transit. We have been told it's an acquired taste but people either love it or they hate it!

We buy the smallest piece we can find and are given a glove to put on while eating it so the stench doesn't get on our hands.. that is how bad the smell is!

Smell aside, the texture is less than desirable and after several more minutes of avoidance, we each muster up the courage to try a small bite. I have to say, it was honestly as bad as I was expecting to be so we wash it down with some ice cream and then it's time to call it a night.

It was such a great day in Kuala Lumpur... we are sad to have such little time here but it definitely makes us want to come back to Malaysia again soon!

$1 Fried Mozzarella at Sabah's Best Night Market ????????

Back in Malaysia for the first time in a few years, I visited the most popular night market in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, for an evening street food rally.

The Api Api Night Food Market on Gaya Street is open every Friday and Saturday night from 6 p.m. until midnight. After spending a rainy Saturday afternoon in my hotel room, the downpour finished just in time for me to go out and visit the food street at opening time.

The first culinary delight I indulged in was a big mozzarella stick. A huge chunk of mozzarella, covered in dough and breadcrumbs, deep-fried and then covered with mayonnaise, cheese sauce and chili sauce.

It was every bit as delicious as it was messy. About half of the sauce ended up on my leg as I attempted to walk and eat it.

Unfortunately there are no tables and chairs set up at the market so it was going to be difficult for me to eat the food while standing up and holding a camera in one hand.

Since my hotel, the Hilton Kota Kinabalu, was nearby, I had the genius idea to just buy food and take it back to my room to consume it. So that's what I did with the next thing I bought, a plate of black pepper lamb.

I ended up needing a metal knife and fork to eat it properly so I was patting myself on the back for having the idea to enjoy it in my hotel room.

I headed back out to the night market and the first thing that looked appealing to me was Takoyaki. It's a famous Japanese street food from Osaka. The food street seems to be more Asian street food in general rather than specifically Malaysian cuisine.

I enjoyed that tasty Japanese snack, again, back in my hotel room, with one of my favourite drinks. A delicious ice Milo.

On my third trip to the food street I went for something more local, the Char Kuey Teow. There was a massive queue for it so I knew it must be good. According to the guy in front of me in the line, this stall 'Penang Kuew Teow' is famous after going viral on Facebook.

After grabbing a lychee juice, I took Malaysia's famous noodle dish back to my room to much. My thoughts - delicious! I'd definitely eat it again.

After nipping out to the market for the fourth time, I returned with meatball pasta, Tahu Perkedel and an iced green tea. The Tahu Perkedel is fried tofu with minced beef inside. It was decent but a bit on the bland side. Definitely should be consumed with sauce.

And after that I was well and truly stuffed!

I ate a ton of food at the Api Api market but spent very little money. Malaysia seems a bit more expensive than Indonesia but it's still definitely a great budget travel destination.

Roadside Street Food In Malaysian Village - Traveling Malaysia Episode 73

During our Malaysia roadtrip we found roadside street food in Malaysian village with nothing but friendly locals – Let’s check out Malaysian street food in a village

Welcome to episode 73 of my trip all around Malaysia. If you haven’t seen the previous episodes you can watch them here:
➡️

We are currently on our Malaysia roadtrip and what I really like to do is to stop at random roadside street food stalls to check out their Malaysian street food. Its always super interesting to see their offers and how much it costs in these Malaysian villages. We stopped in a small town called Bekok, in the Johor state in Malaysia. A state that a haven’t visited while traveling Malaysia yet. Beside nice Malaysian street food I found nothing but super friendly locals there. Everyone is always so welcoming towards us foreigners here, especially in these small villages. Amazing!

When you travel southeast Asia, make sure to stop at small villages like this. The experiences there are totally different than travelling southeast Asia just in the popular big cities. If you want to get to know the real side of the countries, travel off the beaten path.

What’s your favorite street food? Let me know in the comments ⬇️

Full Day of Eating in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ????????

I started my day in the Imbi area of Kuala Lumpur, looking for some Malaysian breakfast food. Nasi Lemak is known as the national dish of Malaysia and is commonly eaten in the morning, so that was what I was specifically hunting for.

I found a restaurant that sells it, packaged to takeaway, but was able to eat it at one of their outdoor tables.

The Nasi Lemak is rice that's been cooked with pandan and coconut milk, with all those flavours soaked right into the rice. It's served with anchovies, peanuts, egg and a spicy sambal sauce.

It was incredibly tasty but ridiculously spicy, especially for me first meal of the day.

After visiting the KLCC urban park in the centre of KL for a bit of exercise, I returned to my hotel for a well earned siesta.

In the afternoon I took a trip to Chinatown. Petaling Street is a big pedestrianised road hosting a popular market. There is a roof cover over the street, which I really appreciated as it started raining as soon as I arrived.

I was there on a food hunt but there was little on offer on Petaling Street itself. It was mostly clothes and knockoff watches and bags. Still, it was a good opportunity for me to add to my football shirt collection. I successfully bargained for a jersey of the Malaysia Super League champions, Johor.

I was leaving Jalan Petaling to find food and found it right at the end of the street. There was a stall selling pork jerky. I'd tried this type of meat before in Macau and it was very tasty. A lot juicier than the type of jerky you'd buy from the supermarket.

I got the pork bacon version and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was covered in a sweet, tasty glaze. Mmmmmm!

I had asked the vendor how long the meat lasts for and he said 2 weeks, however I finished it in 2 minutes!

The bussin' bacon got my appetite perked up and I continued the food hunt, stumbling upon the Tang City Food Court. It was like one of those hawker centres you find in Singapore, where there's many simple street food cart type vendors, but they have stalls inside the centre rather than out on the street.

Seafood dumpling noodle soup seemed like a good choice of Chinese food in Chinatown. The soup and noodles were tasty but nothing special, but I really loved the dumplings, each one stuffed with a seafood meatball.

I went searching for a local Malaysian dessert such as Ais Kacang, but then it started raining. I found the nearest mall on Google Maps and hoped they'd have a food court. But I had no chance of getting local food there because it turned out to be a Filipino Mall, where almost all the shops, restaurants and staff were Filipino.

So instead of Ais Kacang I enjoyed some Pinoy Halo Hallo dessert!

With still enough room in my belly for one last meal, I went on the hunt for Ayam Penyet. It's another famous Malay dish that I hadn't tried yet.

I found a street vendor that was highly rated on Google Maps, but after trekking all the way there the vendor was nowhere to be found. Instead I went to the nearest food street in Bukit Bintang and asked the locals where I could get Ayam Penyet.

I'm not sure the one I tried was fully authentic, as I had heard that penyet means they smash up the chicken before cooking it, but they didn't do that. So I will have to try this dish in another restaurant in the future.
