Episode 78 - Everything you ever wanted to know about hiking Mount Carrigain
Show Notes – Episode 78
Welcome to the Sounds Like a Search and Rescue Podcast! Also known as SLASR. Join an experienced search and rescue volunteer and his friend as they discuss all things related to hiking and search and rescue in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
This week we bring you to the center of the White Mountains Universe - also known as Mount Carrigain. Join us as we break down the various approaches to this classic NH hike and we will throw in some stories about near misses of disaster - Stomps climb of the Mount Lowell Shoot and Mike's experience with a friend suffering from Hypothermia on the Signal Ridge trail. Later in the show, Stomp is going to lead a brief discussion about broken specter phenomena. All this and some stories of hikers getting in trouble over the weekend.
Correction: We got the mileage wrong on Sawyer River Road - Parking lot is 2 miles into Sawyer River, Livermore is down the road to Sawyer River Trail. Stomp comes in from Hancock Notch so he referenced Livermore as being before Signal Ridge while Mike was talking in terms of coming in from Sawyer River Road.

Sustainable travel | Amadeus Sustainable Ecosystem interviews Chooose, Caphenia & Travalyst
After decades of continuous growth of the travel and tourism sector, with a primary focus on economic development, concern for the environment has risen to unprecedented levels over the last two years - and this is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.
With this in mind, we recently convened a webinar to examine the key challenges we face creating a more environmentally sustainable travel industry – and how we might overcome them. From key partners and industry experts, CHOOOSE, Caphenia and Travalyst, we heard that measuring the environmental impact of travel is a challenge in its own right, while scant supplies of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) were highlighted. Carbon offsetting was also explored by our panel, shedding light on significant change in the area.
Calico Ghost Town- Christmas Festival 2021- Yermo California
Calico Ghost Town- Christmas Festival 2021- Yermo California
Calico is an old West mining town that has been around since 1881 and was abandoned in the mid-1890s after silver lost its value.
The town that once gave miners a good living lost its hustle and became a “ghost town.”
Walter Knott of Knotts Berry Farm fame, purchased Calico in the 1950’s architecturally restoring all but the five original buildings to look as they did in the 1880’s. Calico received State Historical Landmark 782 and in 2005 was proclaimed by then Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to be California’s Silver Rush Ghost Town.
Today, Calico is part of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks system, which is visited by people from across the country and from all over the world. Along with its history and attractions, Calico Ghost Town has shops, restaurants and offers camping, hiking and off-roading.
Calico is located close to Barstow California and is only 3 or 4 miles off of Interstate highway 15 between Los Angeles California and Las Vegas Nevada.
