Eat Raja is the fascinating story of an engineer turned radio jockey who gave up his career to help his mother look after the family juice shop upon the untimely passing of his father a couple of years ago. And along the way, elevated it from a mere juice shop to the country’s first zero waste juice bar. Where there is no plastic, no paper used, where imaginative juice concoctions are served in vestibules fashioned out of fruit shells, highly instagrammable, that after serving their purpose are then gathered to be fed to cows. I catch up with zero-waste evangelist, Anand Raj aka Raja, taste six of his slurp-worthy creations, and leave with the one thought that we must all pay heed to what we waste. Take care and stay safe.

Mr. Srinivas Padiyar, a native of Kundapura, set up a sugarcane juice shop in Seshadripuram in 1977. However, fed up with the flies that would swarm around sugar cane, he shifted to making fruit juices, his attempt being to offer fruit juices with no sugar to the extent possible, by juicing only the freshest produce in the prime of their season. This coupled with his honest approach, “to offer customers full value for their hard earned money’ has earned for Lakshmi Juice Centre a loyal following through the years. I visited the store one warm evening to taste some of his most popular offerings.

Shyam Mishra moved from Allahabad to Bengaluru 35 years ago to set up a small juice shop in a narrow alley of Chickpet. That in itself wasn’t an event perhaps, but it was his recipes for fresh juice blends and rich creamy milk shakes created only with seasonal produce that over time has made Shyam Mishra Juice Centre a destination not only in the area but am told also in the dozen or so outlets it operates in Bengaluru, manned by the extended family that has since migrated to the city to support the trade. I dropped in at their original store to taste nine of their popular offerings, each one special and refreshing. Definitely a juice shop to add to your summer cooler list.
