Napa Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to Napa

Things you'll want to know before you travel to the Napa Valley in California. The best time of year to come: September & October. Grape Harvest seasons. June/July/August is HOT! Really Hot in the day like 90-100F. But cold at night... in the 50's. The morning fog during June through August is deceptive; temperatures get toasty once it burns off

2. Napa is Expensive: Think Disneyland prices, Hotels, Food, and wine tasting. Wine tastings cost $20-$75

3. Napa is more than the city of Napa: The whole Napa Valley, St Helena, Calistoga, Sonoma too

4. Getting to Napa: Ultimately Driving, but you can fly in to
Sacramento, Oakland, SFO, SJC. Napa is located 40 miles south of Sacramento and 50 miles north of San Francisco. About an hour drive from each. You can also take a bus to Napa from Oakland and San Francisco.

5. Public transit is non-existant, but there are wine tours if you don't want to drive.

6. Reservations: Make reservations, for winery tastings, and dinner. You'll thank me later.

7. Wake up early: Especially on the weekends if you are visiting the wineries, go to the busy ones before noon. After 12 is when they get crazy busy.

8. No nightlife -- all the wineries close at 5-6pm to prevent drunk driving. Only thing to do a night is eat. And you better do that before 9pm.

9. Food: Best food is in the town of Napa itself. Think about a picnic lunch from V. Sattui or Dean and Deluca (Both in St. Helena)

10. Don't drink too much -- particularly on a hot day... the wine goes to your head faster. Many tasting rooms have a place that you can spit your wine. It's okay to spit it out after tasting, the more you spit, the more you can taste.

Calistoga, Saint Helena, Napa

Walking Tour - (4k) California - Calistoga

Calistoga is a small city in California's Napa Valley. It's known for hot springs, mud baths and wineries, including one set in Castello di Amorosa, a medieval-style castle.

The Old Faithful Geyser of California erupts at regular intervals.

Works by Italian artist Carlo Marchiori are displayed at the Ca'toga Galleria D'Arte, in town.

To the southeast, Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park has an 1846 mill.

Calistoga, Napa Valley (California)

We had a wonderful few days in the Napa Valley township of Callistoga.

Wandered around the pretty town, drove up into the mountains nearby and generally got a feel for this pretty and quaint township.

Due to summer forest fires in the area, we stayed close to town. Met some wonderful folk with great stories and took time to have some town time, coffees and lunches out.

Napa Valley Drive in Autumn - Yountville to Calistoga on Main Highway.

Enjoy a relaxing real-time drive through Napa valley on Main Highway (CA-29) on a overcast autumn day.
The drive starts just after Yountville and ends at Tubbs Lane past Calistoga.
Main highlights are the beautiful town of St. Helena and trees with autumn foliage that form a canopy over the highway just outside St. Helena.
