Humanitarian Crisis in Yemen, Feb 22, Dr. Aisha Jumaan

Time to learn about Yemen from a native expert who visited Yemen in Sep and Oct 2021. Aisha is very knowledgeable about Yemen and what is going on there today in Feb 22. Aisha will discuss the 6+ year war’s impact on the population’s health. This video presents the harsh reality of life for civilians in Yemen. And in 46 minutes later you will have an understanding of what life for the civilians in Ukraine may soon become like.
Since March 2015, the Saudi-led coalition with US support, has waged a brutal war in Yemen against the Houthis who control the country. Saudi imposed a blockade on Yemen, has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. The Houthis, representing the other side of the war, are themselves blocking relief efforts and are actively fighting the Saudis and the UAE. The losers are the Yemeni people. The UN reports that millions of Yemenis are on the brink of famine. Over 16 million people are food insecure and 2.5 million are under 5 years of age. Outbreaks are rampant including the largest cholera outbreak in recorded history, dengue, diphtheria and severe acute respiratory infections including COVID19 with the highest fatality rate. Dr. Aisha Jumaan has over 30 years of experience in public health, including viral vaccine preventable diseases, cervical and breast cancer research, maternal and child health and nutrition, and primary health care. Aisha worked for over 10 years with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also worked in her native home, Yemen, with the UNFPA and UNDP and participated in health-related program development for the Peace Corps. Aisha was an Assistant Professor on the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sana’a University in Yemen, and at Emory University school of Public Health in Atlanta, GA. She is currently working as an independent consultant managing health projects in Yemen. Aisha also the Founder and President of the Yemen Relief and Reconstruction Foundation.
