PAYSON ARIZONA ROADS | Driving through the beautiful landscapes of Payson

In the geographic center of Arizona lies the “Rim Country”, so named by the overwhelming presence of the Mogollon Rim. The Rim rests 7,000 feet above sea level and presents a dramatic drop of over 2,000 feet to the communities below. It is covered in forest and grass land, and has been the home to Native Americans, cowboys, ranchers, farmers, hunters, fishermen, and nature lovers for centuries. It is a land of extreme beauty, natural endowments, and historical significance.

Ep. 222: Mogollan Rim | Payson Arizona RV travel camping

The National Park Service pronounces it mo-go-yown, whereas the Forest Service says it's pronounced muggy-own. Whatever, it seems like a distinction with little difference to us. Between intense summer heat, thick wildfire smoke, and incidents like what happened to us here at the Mogollon Rim, our 2021 season seems to be one of the best laid plans going awry. We nevertheless share a wonderful visit to these pine-covered highlands of Arizona, including Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, ancient ruins of prehistoric inhabitants at Shoofly Village, the Payson Campground & RV Resort, and of course the stunning natural beauty of the Rim itself.

SHOOFLY VILLAGE RUINS | Education & Imagination of Arizona Heritage | Payson, AZ

Arizona has no shortage of locales offering Indian ruins. Shoofly Village Ruin is just one of the many which stirs up the imagination. Today we went to visit to see how it stacks up to some of the others we’ve visited.

▬▬ C A C T U S A T L A S . C O M ▬▬
⚪ Read our review -
⚪ Get more information -

Today we adventured to a new location for us. Just north of Payson, Arizona near the Mogollon Rim, lies the Shoofly Ruins. These ruins are what remains of a village thought to be occupied between 1000 and 1250 AD.

The Shoofly Village Ruins covers 4 acres and was originally occupied by people with ties to the Hohokam and Salado. As with many nearby cultures, trade was common here which expanded pottery, jewelry, and minerals as well as architectural style. The Village Ruins are composed of three different architecture groupings which represent different ages in the growth of the village.

As we wound our way around the footpaths we could make out the remains of these different building styles. Early oval rooms along with later square and rectangular shapes stood where once families slept, ate, gathered, and generally lived their day-to-day lives. Eventually, adjoining square block rooms, much like a modern apartment building, were built. It felt amazing to stand where others lived before and look out onto the grassland and Mogollon Rim seeing what they likely saw and were their immediate resources. Our minds wandered imagining what life and community was like.

All in all, the village contained around 80 rooms with several courtyards and a wall encompassing the entire village. Remnants found by archeologists at Arizona State University included storage jars, grinding stones, and hearths. Many remains of corn were found which indicate that corn may have been a primary crop grown by the people living in the village.

While not much remains other than the outlines of what once were buildings and walls, the signage is helpful, plentiful, and supplies visitors with information. The pathway is paved and accessible. And you cannot beat a free activity for the family to do.

How to locate quartz veins and find the best stones at Payson, AZ

We spent some time talking with a few people who found some excellent stones in Payson and they shared some of their knowledge with us.

This particular video is focused on honing in on where the source of the quartz is coming from based on what you find randomly on the ground.

This video is the one that describes the rocks you'll be looking for:

One person said they went from finding 20 nice stones to 200 nice ones during a dig (in open dig season: Sept 30 - Mar 1). When you find 10 times the stones, and those stones are closer to the source, they are often less damaged and ultimately are 10x more likely to find the ones that you'll really love!

Roosevelt Lake - Payson Arizona Real Estate

Roosevelt Lake near Payson, Arizona is a beautiful body of water set in the desert 40 miles southeast of Payson in the Tonto Basin. Roosevelt lake is the first lake on the Salt River Chain of lakes and is by far the largest of the large desert reservoirs. Because of its lower elevation in the Tonto Basin south of Payson, Roosevelt is a warm water lake with a desert landscape.

For more information on Roosevelt Lake or Real Estate opportunities in Payson, Arizona or the Tonto Basin, contact Dennis Riccio at (928) 517-4550 or visit

Roosevelt lake was created in 1911 with the completion of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam that was constructed on the Salt River as part of the Salt River Project. The lake was the world’s largest man-made lake at the time and today remains the largest lake located entirely within the state of Arizona. Both the dam and the lake were named for U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt who dedicated the dam himself in 1911.

Roosevelt Lake contains a variety of warm water game fish including largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, flathead and channel catfish, carp and sunfish. Because of its massive 21,500 surface acres most fisherman utilize a boat.

Roosevelt accommodates a variety of boats ranging from kayaks to houseboats and everything in between. The lake has 6 boat launch facilities and is popular with fisherman, water-skiers, jet skiers, and kayakers.

The lake has a full-service marina and store with boat rentals with a variety of different kinds of boats. Accommodations around the lake include camping, and RV Park, and even a floating hotel. There is a full-service bar and public barbecue at the Marina and restaurants near the lake.

Tonto Basin is located roughly 30 minutes south of the center of Payson and situated at 2,500 feet lower than Payson in the Valley of Tonto Creek. The lower elevation and higher temperatures change the landscape from lush pine forest to the Sonoran Deserts iconic saguaro cactus.

Tonto Creek and Roosevelt Lake are two water features that dominate life here. Tonto Creek flows down from high atop the Mogollon Rim before flowing into the Salt River and Roosevelt Lake. Ranches are prevalent along the creek in both Punkin Center and Tonto Basin and residents include year-round residents as well as vacation homeowners who are here for the area's natural beauty and vast recreation opportunities.

Between Tonto Basin and The Town of Payson you will find the communities of Rye, Deer Creek, and Gisela.
