DOCKING OUR 35ft SAILBOAT WITH NO EXPERIENCE!!

A big thank you to Squarespace for sponsoring this video. If you’d like to open your own online shop or create a website go to Squarespace.com/wildweroam for 10% of your first purchase.

Do you own a boat? Do you remember your first time docking it? Docking was something that had me so nervous, especially because wind and current around here can get crazy. However, with a few tips from local boaters to take it slow, go when the conditions are flat, and ask for help from the dockhands, things turn out much better than expected.

Hope you enjoy this one! It feels like one we're going to look back at on in many years and relish in how far we've come as boaters.
Big hugs,
Dana

How to Dock Twin Rudder Boat With No Prop Wash and Prop Walk

In this video, I’ll discuss how to single-handed dock and undock twin-rudder boat with no Prop Walk and no Prop Wash. Previously I made a few videos talking about my experience of dealing with Prop Walk in the narrow fairway. If you are interested, please check them out.

Recently I had chance to sail two twin-rudder Beneteaus with sail drive, 35 and 38 respectively. They have two rudders, one on port and the other on the starboard side. Since the rudders are not directly behind the propeller, combined with the sail drive, the boats have no prop wash and prop walk is close to none. No prop walk and prop wash mean no maneuverability in a complete stop.

In short, single-handed docking twin-rudder boat follows exactly the same routing, but needs more precision in terms of where to put the stern. If wind or current is in play, being able to quickly tie one dock line is the key.

This video will show you how I cope with these differences and improve my own single-handed docking.

Number one, twin-rudder boat gains steerageway at very low speeds, little over 1 knot, thanks in part to its increased blade area. The slow speed with steerage is key to the next step.

Number two, I have to dock more precisely by putting the stern close enough to the finger while the boat is still in motion. The key here is in motion. Otherwise, I am stuck. Without Prop walk and Prop Wash, I couldn’t kick the stern over in a complete stop. Some people suggest throwing the stern line over the cleat and secure it while still onboard. It might work. I just motored out and had a do-over. Second time is a charm. I was able to get off the boat.

Number three, prepare your dock lines. I found out I need all three lines, especially the spring line secured in the center cleat closer to the boat’s pivot point. I led the bow line back to the center of the beam. After I got off the boat, I grabbed two dock lines. One is always the spring line. Depending on the situation, pilings, neighbor boats, wind and current, the other one is either bow or stern line. I tied the spring line first.

Of course, if you have the bow thruster installed or help either on board or on the dock, you don’t have to go through these troubles.

In terms of undocking, without prop walk, undocking stern first is as easy as it could be. Just remember there is no prop wash either. When you turn the wheel and push forward the throttle, the bow won’t turn immediately, only after the boat move forward a little. Basically the standing turn needs slight bigger space.

Ok, that’s all for today’s video. For your information, I really like twin-rudder boat in sailing. I’ll see you next time.

DOCKING STERN TO IN 40 KNOTS

So many have been asking for the docking in more serious conditions! This was a learn to sail day I ran in Croatia with some beginners in Dec 2021. We got some great weather for learning heavy weather sailing. And came into the marina in 35-43knots of wind.
Leave your comments and questions.

I will do a walk through explanation follow up video and answer or address any of the discussion.

Apologies about the quality of the video! Was happy to have one of the students record on their phone and only got it via whatsapp, I was a bit busy!

Dock and undock Catalina 30

In this video, I’ll show you a series of maneuvers how I dock into and back out of the slip. Videos were recorded in different days with different weather and current conditions. Docking/undocking processes hugely depend on the marina, and more importantly the wind and current.

Our First Time Sailing Alone - with ZERO experience!

Before we get into the description for today's video, I just want to say how grateful we are for the experience with David this past winter and spring. Not a lot of adult siblings get this kind of time together and so we are grateful that our paths could cross for this experience. We wish him all the best and love him dearly.

Hope you guys are excited as we are to share in this learning process as we go from zero knowledge of sailing to hopefully enough to get us out into the open ocean successfully. It's going to be a huge learning curve, but we're really thrilled to get to do this together and share it with you. Sailing is an art form and while it's probably going to take us a decade to become masters, we're just looking forward to the day when we'll be able to get off and back on the mooring without stress hahah

Thanks for all your words of encouragement and support along the way! Penelope really is our dream home and we're so happy to be living life on the water.

Big hugs,
Dana

Compilation of Sailboat Docking

Hi, this video is a compilation of four rounds of sailboat maneuvering and docking with bow first both starboard and port side. Personally, I like to record and watch my own videos that have a lot of details I didn’t notice in the first place when I was driving the boat. I think It’s the best way to help me catch what I did wrong and which areas need to improve. This video is pretty much self explained. Thanks for watching.

Our first time docking did not go according to plan

After having a rough first night anchoring on Lake George, we decided to make day two of our Maiden Voyage a bit shorter. We left Lake George and took a short cruise to Astor, Florida and chose to dock at Astor Bridge Marina! Unfortunately our first time docking outside of a protected marina, did not go as planned.

Thanks for watching,

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive head first into boat life, and kick off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.

Thank you for following us along our journey!

This is How We DOCK IT! [Ep. 56]

This is how we dock our boat and prepare it for storms in a new harbor known for damaging boats. We even witness a few major boat docking fails ourselves.

#sailing #docking #storms #boatfails #liveaboard

We sail 100 miles offshore overnight from Terceira to Sao Miguel in the Azores. It is the next leg in our journey to sail around the world. We dock up in a big city as we prepare to leave the boat for one month and fly home to do some racing and professional boat prep and delivery work.

This harbor is known for its rough conditions with damaging winds from the south. We prepare with extra fenders and double dock lines as well as removing the sails from the mast and boom and securing the halyards.

While we are at this we witness a a yacht crash into the dock right ahead of us and go to assist. We tour the harbor and find more boat carnage from the 35 knot + southerly winds.

Who are we?

We are a young YouTube sailing channel couple that sold it all and left to sail around the world. We enjoy traveling off the beaten path, so we are sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good hope, not through the Panama Canal like most others.

Meet Kate and Curtis. Kate was a school teacher. Curtis was a business consultant. Roxy the dog was rescued from a shelter. They bought a boat, spent months refitting it on a budget, and set off to see the world together.

Before leaving, like you, we watched videos of sailing and cruising, ocean crossings, and circumnavigating, every week. We enjoyed the best sailing channels such as Sailing La Vagabonde, SV Delos, Gone with the Wynns, Project Atticus, Sailing Nahoa, and more. We were inspired by these influencers and hope to return the favor. We want to show you the world and inspire you to break free and go sailing.

We are a little bit different than the rest. Our new sailing channel is dedicated to performance sailing and relaxing videos. Our goal is to teach you a little bit about sailing fast as we were both experienced offshore sailboat racers before leaving. We hope to teach you about sail trim, boat handling, safety, and navigation while passagemaking in bluewater. Sorry, but you won't find Instagramers, bikini models, or sailboat fails here. Just real sailing and cruising stuff that you can watch with the family.

Prior to our sail away we both enjoyed racing sailboats at a high level. Kate was a sailing instructor, Jr. National Champion sailor, and race winning offshore helmswoman. Curtis has been on the water all his life, raced one-design Melges 24s, and has accumulated quite the list of offshore racing wins as a navigator.

We are enjoying the digital nomad and tiny home lifestyle on our boat. We have a long way to go. It has been extra challenging due to pandemic related lockdowns and border closures, but we are determined to push through and sail around the world before the music stops.

We've checked all of our things. We're nice and clear. I was going to say we've looked at the wind but the wind unfortunately just died completely on us. Unfortunately cos I wanted to show you how to do that with wind but, yeah, anyway so. Marina Baotič, Marina Baotič this is yacht Marie do you copy. So we call up the marina on the channel that they are designated. Here it's 17. Now we are here in our approach to the marina. Now one thing I am teaching all the time when I teach, training and skippering, and all that sort of thing. With docking and manoeuvring under power, because its one of the hardest things about sailing and that is ONLY GO AS FAST AS YOU NEED TO and use neutral as a gear. So right now I'm doing just under 2 knots and I'm in control I have control because there is not that much wind in here and I don't need more than 2 knots to have control with my rudders. So you only go as fast as you need to, to stay in control. So I can click in and out of forward to maintain that control while I'm in here

we bought a sailboat with NO EXPERIENCE (where it has lead us) | Beau and Brandy Sailing

We bought a sailboat with no experience, but knew that we could learn along the way. We left Florida with our barebones sailboat and along the way we have made her more comfortable with the generosity of many. We didn’t even know if we were going to like #sailing, so we didn’t add a lot to #sailboat, because why spend money on her if it turns out we didn’t like it. Well turns out we have fallen in love and after 3 years things are starting to rip and rust. So we need to replace our rusty old anchor chain and replace some sails. We received a very nice email from Anne saying she has three hank on sails that she would like to give to us. And after waiting for weeks they finally arrive. We find a reputable anchor chain supplier in St. Thomas, so we finally are able to replace the anchor chain. And now we can sail to St. Croix, where we hope to get some diving in, including a night dive.

Lighthouse Marine St Thomas:

MANY thanks to all our amazing patrons, that really go above and help make these videos possible.

big love,
Beau + Brandy

BLUE LAGOON, SPINY LOBSTERS & 225 STEPS IN ST VINCENT

#catamaransailing #leopard48catamaran #sailing #BlueLagoon #PetitByahaut #YoungIsland #FortDuvernette #spinylobster

On our sail to St Vincent, we anchored for the night at Petit Byahaut, a secluded spot not even accessible by road with great snorkeling along the north side of this small bay.

Next day, we sailed to the Blue Lagoon and took a dock for a couple nights so we could wash the boat in preparation for our guests. The marina had everything you would need. Dock, fuel, water, electric, laundry service, gardens, pool with lounge areas, car rental, taxi and restaurants. You can walk into nearby village for provisions.

While at the dock, of course, Stephen made friends with the local fishermen and scored us some spiny lobsters!

After Blue Lagoon, we took a mooring ball at Young Island, a private island resort with 13 acres of tropical gardens and 29 airy cottages to choose from (translation: no air conditioning!)

Fort Duvernette
The French built this fort on top of a large volcanic rock near Young island, to defend the town of Calliaqua. We climbed the 225 steps that were carved into the rock to get 360-degree views of the shoreline. What we can’t quite figure out is how they got all of the cannons to the top! Give us your educated guess in the comments.
