I went to a country that ‘doesn’t exist’ at least on the map. But it’s a place that sure feels like a real country. Being here is a reminder that international relations can often ignore the realities on the ground, and the people who live in these places. For me it’s important to not just look at these places on a map but to go and see them. Feel them. Talk to the people who live there. That’s what this fourth and final episode from Cyprus is about. I hope you enjoy.

The Untold Stories of Cyprus' Buffer Zone

In this video we explore the Green Line of Cyprus. The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarized zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that was established in 1964 and extended in 1974 after the ceasefire of 16 August 1974, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and the de facto partition of the island into the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus (excluding the British Sovereign Base Areas) and the largely unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. The zone, also known as the Green Line (Greek: Πράσινη Γραμμή, Prasini Grammi; Turkish: Yeşil Hat), stretches for 180 kilometres (112 miles) from Paralimni in the east to Kato Pyrgos in the west, where a separate section surrounds Kokkina.

The dividing line is also referred to as the Attila Line, named after Turkey's 1974 military intervention, codenamed Operation Attila. The Turkish army has built a barrier on the zone's northern side, consisting mainly of barbed-wire fencing, concrete wall segments, watchtowers, anti-tank ditches, and minefields. The zone cuts through the centre of Nicosia, separating the city into southern and northern sections. In total, it spans an area of 346 square kilometres (134 sq mi), varying in width from less than 20 metres (66 ft) to more than 7 kilometres (4.3 mi). After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, Nicosia remains the last divided capital in Europe. Some 10,000 people live in several villages and work on farms located within the zone; the village of Pyla is famous for being one of the few remaining villages in Cyprus where Greek and Turkish Cypriots still live side by side. Other villages are Deneia, Athienou, and Troulloi. Some areas are untouched by human interference and have remained a safe haven for flora and fauna.

This is not a regular city walk, but a passage through a town frozen in time. It will give you an insight into the current situation of the Buffer Zone “Green Line” off the beaten track, on streets that are hard to discover without the experience of a local guide. You will see the Venetian walls and how they form a border around the old city, so unusual that once seen on a map will never be forgotten as a design synonymous with the unique shape of this ancient fortification.
On our walk we will explore the south side of the city and follow the infamous “Green line” that cuts through the center, separating the city into southern and northern sections. This division has kept the two major communities, of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots apart for more than four decades. Our journey begins at the Ledra Palace hotel known in its era as the largest and most majestic hotel in the capital.

You will witness life having evolved along either side of this schism, something once impossible to do until recent agreements between the two sides to open border crossings. We will explore Ledra street located at the heart of the aforementioned walled city now once again rekindled to one of the most popular pedestrian commercial streets accented by abandoned buildings reclaimed by nature through decades of lost time scarred by bullet holes, military outposts and barricades.

Journey Through Cyprus - Europe Travel Documentary

Cyprus has been at the crossroads of civilizations for millennia and is among the most diverse and fascinating places in the Mediterranean Sea. Located on the edge of Europe, the island has been influenced by traditions, religions, and cultures from three different continents.

Due to its complicated recent history, the country is divided into two parts, that are inherently different yet surprisingly similar. For the traveler, Cyprus offers an abundance of ancient sites, spectacular natural scenery, vibrant cities, tasty food, and friendly, welcoming people.

In this travel documentary, I’m traversing Cyprus, visiting some of the most beautiful and interesting places, in both the Southern and Northern part. The video was made in November 2022, when I had the chance to travel around Cyprus for 2 weeks.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start this journey in Nicosia, the vibrant capital city of Cyprus, also known as the ‘last divided capital in the world’, symbolizing the island’s complicated political situation. We explore both the South and North, and witness some of the contrasts and similarities. While the narrow streets of the old city offer some incredible historic monuments, we also visit some newer parts of Nicosia.

After renting a car, we drive through the Troodos mountains, a spectacular region with picturesque villages, rugged mountain landscape, and hidden monasteries that contain colorful frescoes. Some of the highlights include Mount Olympus, Agros and Kykkos Monastery.

Our next destination is Paphos, a friendly tourist center that boasts the mesmerizing ‘Pafos Archaeological Site’. Following the coastline, we briefly stop at Aphrodite’s Rock (or Petra tou Romio), a mythical landmark surrounded by pretty beaches.

We visit the ancient city-state of Kourion with its striking location on the Mediterranean, before catching a break on the coastal promenade of Limassol (or Lemesos), a cosmopolitan city and important business and entertainment hub.

Driving back inland, we come across one of the oldest and best-preserved pre-historic sites in the region, Choirokoitia, before arriving in Lefkara. Surrounded by steep valleys, this photogenic village is famous for its historic embroidery, lace, and silverware production. Although the industry has diminished over the years, you can still witness artisans at work in the narrow cobble-stone alleys.

Larnaca is a laidback city and gateway to the island, providing a good introduction to Cypriot daily life and culture. It’s our last stop before arriving in Cape Greco peninsula and national park, the Easternmost point in the European Union. It’s a beautiful place with rugged scenery, full of walking trails.

We return to the North of Cyprus, visiting the intriguing walled city of Famagusta. The historic center provides a great insight into this former stronghold, with narrow alleyways, crumbling churches, and the massive Lala Mustafa Mosque. Just outside central Famagusta is Varosha, where we are tragically reminded of Cyprus’ complex political situation. This abandoned neighborhood used to be a thriving beach resort but has now turned into a ghost town.

Traveling further North, we visit Bellapais, with its imposing Abbey, and arrive in Kyrenia, the most visited city in Northern Cyprus, partly due to its connection with Turkey. The skyline is dominated by the massive castle, but the city also offers a pretty old town and lively harbor with restaurants and cafes.

Not far from Kyrenia is our final destination, St Hilarion Castle. Built on a craggy mountainside, it’s a captivating place to explore, with crumbling towers, tunnels, hidden courtyards, and sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscape.

Welcome to Amazing Europe! In today's video, we delve into the comprehensive ranking of all European countries from worst to best, as determined by the Legatum Institute. This ranking takes into account 12 different factors including security, health, economy, infrastructure, and education. We've also included transcontinental states and those that identify socio-culturally as European, but excluded the 5 microstates as they are not part of the Legatum Institute's ranking. We can't wait to hear your thoughts! Enjoy the journey as we unveil Europe's diverse landscape, from its lowest to its highest ranked nations.
Welcome to this new video titled: Europe Unveiled: Ranking ALL European Countries From Worst to Best.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Legatum Institute's Prosperity Index does not include microstates and Kosovo. The reason they gave for this choice is the following: due primarily to their small size (in terms of population).

These are the 12 categories considered by the Legatum Institute: Safety & Security, Personal Freedom, Governance, Social Capital, Investment Environment, Enterprise Conditions, Infrastructure & Market Access, Economic Quality, Living Conditions, Health, Education, Natural Environment. Each category is further divided into many subcategories. If you want to know the complete list (which includes all the nations of the world), you can find it here:

How Many Countries Are There in Asia?

How many countries are there in Asia? Well, that’s a question that many have been asking for years! Well, for starters, the continent of Asia is made up of 48 different countries and three other territories. However, the list excludes Russia, as despite of having it 75% of land in Asia, only 22% of its population resides in that part!
Apart from the countries, Asia itself is divided into 5 different sub-regions by the United Nations. So, today in this video, we will look at these 5 different sub-regions of Asia and the countries they inherit in greater detail.
So, without further ado, let’s get to it!

A Brief Knowledge about the Asian Continent

The Asian continent is the largest and most populous of the seven continents. It covers an area of 44,579,000 square kilometres (17,212,000 square miles), or about one-third of the world’s land surface. As of January 1, 2018 its population was estimated at 4.5 billion.
Asia is bounded by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the east and south, Europe to the west (specifically Russia), and Africa to the southwest (through Turkey). The Ural Mountains form a natural boundary between Europe and Asia; they also mark a division between northern Eurasia (which includes Siberia) and southern Eurasia (which includes Central Asia).
Geopolitically speaking however we often group all of these regions together as “Eurasia” for convenience sake. The continent can be subdivided into five major physical regions:
• Eastern Asia
• South-Eastern Asia
• Southern Asia
• Central Asia
• Western Asia

Eastern Asia

Eastern Asia is a large and populous region of the world, containing some of the most economically powerful countries in existence. It comprises China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea and South Korea, and has a population of 1.7 billion people – making it home to over 20% of the world’s population. China is by far the largest country in Eastern Asia both in terms of landmass and population; with around 1.4 billion citizens it contains almost ten times as many people as second-placed Japan (127 million).
This makes China not only the most populous country on Earth but also home to more than 18% of humanity. Unsurprisingly given its size and importance, China also boasts one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations and possesses immense economic clout; according to World Bank figures it was responsible for around 15% of global GDP growth between 2010 and 2015. In fact, such is China’s current rate development that some analysts believe it will overtake America to become the world’s largest economy within a decade or two.
The remaining three nations in Eastern Asia are all considerably smaller than either China or Japan; indeed, at just 3.29 million people Mongolia is actually less populous than several individual US states. Meanwhile tiny North Korea continues to be viewed warily by its neighbours due largely to fears over its nuclear weapon stockpiles; although recent diplomatic overtures suggest this may begin to change soon!

Top 10 Places To Visit In Cyprus. 10 Top Tourist Attractions In Cyprus Official Video

This video is showing Top 10 Places To Visit In Cyprus. valuable information but also try to cover the following subject:
-10 top tourist attractions in cyprus
-visit cyprus
-best attractions cyprus

Just south of Turkey, and in the far eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea, is the island of Cyprus. The island is a mixing pot of cultures that is technically geographically located in Asia but has clear ties to Europe.

10. Famagusta

In eastern Cyprus is the city of Famagusta, where the deepest harbor on the island is located. As a result, this is where many of the cruise ships dock when visiting Cyprus. In addition to a thriving port, Famagusta is home to a traditional walled city, which still stands to this day.

9. Akamas Peninsula

The western tip of Cyprus is an area known as the Akamas Peninsula, and it is one of the least-inhabited parts of the island. If you’re eager to get off the beaten track, then this is the place to be: There are literally no paved roads! As a result, it is ideal for hiking or mountain biking.

8. Nicosia.

Nicosia is the capital city of Cyprus, but it is unlike any other capital. Nicosia is divided between the Turkish-controlled Northern Cyprus and the cultural Greek Republic of Cyprus to the South.

7. Protaras.

For maximum relaxation and accessible beaches, it is hard to beat the coastal resort of Protaras.
6. Kyrenia.

he northern section of the island is under Turkish control, rather than the cultural Greek Republic of Cyprus. Kyrenia is a harbor town in Turkish Cyprus that boasts a stunning backdrop made up of the Pentadaktylos Mountains, architecture that is more than 1,300 years old and endless opportunities for outdoor recreation.

5. Larnaca.

Historical evidence shows that Larnaca is likely the oldest city in Cyprus, boasting a history that dates back more than 6,000 years. Many visitors today pass through Larnaca because the city is home to the largest international airport on the island.
4. Troodos Mountains.

In the southwest of the island, the towering Troodos Mountains stand as a major destination for outdoor recreation in Cyprus. You can hike to the rushing waters of the Caledonia Falls, hike over the Milia Medieval Bridge or rent a mountain bike and explore the miles of trails up the mountains as well as around the foothills.
3. Ayia Napa.

If nightlife is what you’re after, then the resort destination of Ayia Napa is the perfect spot to visit.

2. Limassol.

After the capital city, Limassol is the largest urban destination on the island of Cyprus. It is a major sea port, and over the last few decades it has become a major tourism destination for those in search of sun and sand.
1. Paphos.

On the southwestern tip of the island is the coastal town of Paphos, commonly referred to as the birthplace of Aphrodite. Today, Paphos is split into two parts. The lower section is known as Kato Paphos, and it is where many of the hotels and archeological landmarks can be found. The upper destination is the commercial area where you can find shops and eateries. Ruins and archeology are the main attractions in Paphos, and you won’t want to miss the Roman ruins called the House of Dionysus and the House of Theseus, the 16th century Paphos Fort built by the Turkish, the Tombs of the Kings or the Odeon, a classic Greek amphitheater where plays and other live performances are still offered.

Grounded: KTHY Kibris Türk Hava Yollari

This episode of grounded looks at KTHY, otherwise known as Kibris Türk Hava Yollari or Cyprus Turkish Airlines. The de-facto flag carrier of the occupied north of the island, KTHY was a part state-owned airline operating flights to various destinations across Europe, with the caveat that all flights must operate via the Turkish mainland. Starting off as a paper airline without its own aircraft or crews, KTHY would eventually operate numerous aircraft types from the Boeing 727 and 737-800 to the Airbus A321 and A310 widebody. The requirement to operate via the mainland was a big ball and chain for KTHY and the airline eventually collapsed into bankruptcy leaving North Cyprus without an airline of its own...

***Important Note***

This episode was originally intended to air towards the end of February, tying in nicely with the Helios and Eurocypria episodes. Given the political situation that exists in Cyprus and the parallels with what is currently going on elsewhere I put this one on ice for a while, I also found myself out of the area for a month so unable to finish putting the video together. Having finally completed the video and watching it back I admit that this one could be a bit divisive. I have snipped a few bits out from the script which was originally completed & recorded in early January, some parts remain, in-particular some remarks on the situation with the North and Turkey. While I do not mean any disrespect, I should point out that I have personally lived with a group of Greek Cypriots, have visited the island several times and have several Greek Cypriot friends so it should be understandable that some biasness seeps through.

History Matters recently did a video which covered the simplified and unbiased explanation as to the history and division of Cyprus, I honestly recommend checking that video out for a greater understanding of the situation. Video link below;

I mention a few airlines in this episode which I have previously covered in this series, those episodes are listed below.

*Eurocypria
Established by the state owned flag carrier Cyprus Airways, Eurocypria were a leisure airline with a mission to bring more tourists to the island nation. Having begun with a fleet of Airbus A320s Eurocypria would eventually split from Cyprus Airways and switch to a fleet of Boeing 737s. After some turbulent years in the early to mid 2000s things took a turn for the worse with their rescue package being opposed by the European Commission which ultimately saw Eurocypria Grounded, permenantly...

*Helios Airways
Helios Airways was founded in 1999 as the first independently owned airline in the country, Helios would operate a mix of charter and scheduled flights from across Europe to Cyprus. The airline would sadly be mostly remembered for the crash of Helios Flight 522, aka The Ghost Flight which crashed in 2005. Following the tragedy Helios would rebrand as Ajet but despite their best efforts could not shake the ghost of Flight 522 and would cease operations towards the end of 2006.

I really appreciate any comments and feedback on this or other episodes as well as suggestions for future episodes. Believe me, if I say that your airline is on the list, it really is :) Check back to see future episodes or better yet, subscribe to catch them as they land and as always, thanks for watching!

Crete – the ‘big island’: 9,000+ Years of History

Crete is a remarkable island! 260km west to east, 60km north to south at its broadest point and only 12km at its narrowest, it is the largest Greek island and is often called simply ‘the big island’, το μεγάλο νησί. It can also boast over 9,000 years of human history, to which various adjectives have been attached: Minoan, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Venetian, Ottoman. Part of the Greek state only since 1913, it was home to the earliest attested written form of the Greek language, in the Linear B script, one of at least five writing systems used on the island to record an even larger number of languages.

In this illustrated talk, Professor John Bennet (Sidney Sussex 1976) will attempt to bring some order to this dizzying complexity and offer an outline ‘history’ of the island.

Exploring Cyprus: History and Culture

This video delves into Cyprus, exploring its divided geography, tumultuous history, and cultural richness. Cyprus, an island with beautiful coastlines and mountains, is politically divided, with the northern third controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the southern two-thirds forming the Republic of Cyprus. Historically, it has been influenced by Greek and Ottoman rule, and suffered from ethnic tensions leading to its division in 1974. The population is mainly Greek Cypriots in the south and Turkish Cypriots in the north, each with distinct cultural and religious backgrounds. Politically, Cyprus is significant in the Eastern Mediterranean but plagued by unresolved issues between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The culture reflects a blend of influences, showcased in its art, music, and cuisine, including iconic dishes like Souvla and Mahallepi.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite promised to try to step up EU accession talks with Turkey during its presidency over the EU as Turkish President Abdullah Gul is visiting capital Vilnius.

Yesterday Gul met Grybauskaite, today he discussed cooperation with Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius and attended an economic forum.

Turkish President said that the economic crisis in Cyprus is an opportunity to work towards ending the dispute over the decades-old division of the island. He noted that lifting sanctions on the Turkish-held north and reunification could bring huge economic gains.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third in response to an Athens-engineered coup in Nicosia aimed at union with Greece.

Cyprus has been a major obstacle to Turkey's efforts to join the EU. Negotiations started in 2005, but stalled in June 2010. Of the 35 so-called policy chapters EU candidates must negotiate, Turkey has opened talks on only 13.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said she expected the talks could resume later this year as Lithuania would take over the EU presidency in July.

According to Grybauskaite, talks on one or two more chapters might be launched this year.

The Lithuanian president also warned that, taking into account the geopolitical situation, it's very important for the processes not to protract.

The Turkish president said that the accession of large countries with large populations to the EU is a painful process and underlined that even upon the end of talks on all chapters, Turkey would not become an EU member country automatically.

Turkey is one of the main regional leaders and is very important for European Union, very important for us as a Nato partner.

Soundbite (Lithuanian), DALIA GRYBAUSKAITE, Lithuanian President:

During the EU presidency next half of the year, Lithuania is ready to help Turkey not only to resume but also to step up the negotiation process. There's such a political opportunity.

Soundbite (Lithuanian), DALIA GRYBAUSKAITE, Lithuanian President:

The most important thing is that Europe needs Turkey and Turkey needs Europe for the meantime. I say for the meantime because it's very important that these processes do not protract. Because Europe is changing and Turkey is changing. The geopolitical situation in the entire region is changing.

More of the meeting

Soundbite (Turkish), ABDULLAH GUL, Turkish President:

Because at the end of the day, even if the negotiations are completed usefully, full membership is not automatic because, as you know, some countries have decided to take that issue to a referendum. Turkish people may be in a different state of mind at that point of time, but these are issues for that point in time in the future. What is important in our view now is successful completion of negotiations and we do hope that during your presidency, new chapters for negotiations may be opened.

(Cutaway)

Soundbite (Turkish), ABDULLAH GUL, Turkish President:

There is at the moment a significant economic crisis on the island. This should be seen as an important opportunity because there is also a new government on the Greek side. We invite to work together Turks of Cyprus and Greeks of Cyprus, to cooperate in solving this problem.

Cyprus, a Mediterranean gem, is a land of diverse landscapes, ancient history, and vibrant culture. One of its most captivating cities is Limassol, situated on the southern coast. As I strolled through Limassol, I found myself immersed in its unique blend of tradition and modernity.

My journey began at the Limassol Old Port, a place steeped in history. This port has witnessed centuries of maritime activity, from Venetian rule to British influence. Today, it stands as a testament to Limassol's rich past. The Limassol Old Port is a charming area filled with quaint cafes and restaurants, making it an ideal spot to start the day with a cup of aromatic coffee.

Moving on, I ventured towards the Limassol Port, a bustling hub of trade and commerce. The sight of massive cargo ships docked alongside sleek yachts is a testament to Cyprus' significance in the maritime world. The Limassol Port also serves as a gateway to the island, welcoming travelers from near and far.

From the port, I made my way to the heart of Limassol. The city center is a vibrant tapestry of modernity and tradition. The bustling streets are lined with shops, boutiques, and eateries that cater to every taste. As I walked, I couldn't help but notice the harmonious coexistence of old and new architecture, a reflection of Limassol's evolving identity.

My journey then led me to the nearby town of Ayia Napa, which is renowned for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa, with its crystal-clear waters and golden sands, is a paradise for beach lovers. The warm Mediterranean sun kissed my skin as I relaxed on the shore, taking in the breathtaking views.

The nightlife in Ayia Napa is equally exhilarating. The town comes alive after sunset, offering an array of entertainment options. From beachfront clubs to cozy tavernas, Ayia Napa caters to every taste. It's no wonder that it's a top destination for those seeking vibrant nightlife in Cyprus.

Cyprus, though a relatively small island, is divided into two parts: the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. The division has a complex history, but exploring both sides of the island offers a comprehensive view of its unique character.

The northern part of Cyprus, commonly referred to as North Cyprus, has its own distinct charm. As I crossed the border, I marveled at the contrasting landscapes. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus boasts rugged mountains and serene beaches, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling cities of the south.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Cyprus is its culinary scene. The island's cuisine is a delightful blend of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors. From succulent kebabs to fresh seafood, every meal is a culinary adventure. The diverse range of flavors reflects the island's history of cultural influences.

Navigating the trash system in Cyprus is an interesting experience. The island has adopted a recycling program that encourages responsible waste management. Visitors may find it a bit different from what they're used to, but it's a positive step towards environmental sustainability.

In conclusion, my journey through Limassol and Cyprus as a whole was a captivating experience. From the historic Limassol Old Port to the vibrant nightlife of Ayia Napa, and from the divided island to its diverse cuisine, Cyprus offers a unique and unforgettable adventure. Whether you're interested in history, culture, or simply basking in the Mediterranean sun, Cyprus has something for everyone. This island is a treasure waiting to be discovered, and I encourage everyone to explore its beauty and charm.
