Japan's Most Beautiful Cycling Route | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.

Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!

So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.

Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.

So, hope you enjoy the new adventure with me and let me know in the comments something you have always wanted to do!! And then MAKE time for it and actually go do it! :D

Onomichi is a cruisy sea-side town that offers hiking, ramen and more cycling than your butt can handle. Ferry across the peninsula and cycle the Shimanami Kaido as it slowly dawns on you how woefully wrong you were to overestimate your cardio fitness.

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido

The Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道) is one of my favorite cycling routes in Japan. While the route sounds quite intense, most of the inclines are manageable—as long as you stick to the main route—and speeding down the mountains can be very rewarding. Crossing the first few islands from Onomichi can feel tough at times with frequent ups and downs, and some busy urban areas. However, pressing on makes it all worth it as you get used to cycling the long distance and the views just keep getting better. We've covered the route in a few articles on AAJ, as it tops our top three cycling routes in Japan list, but this time we're giving you the full experience.

Watch the video above to experience the journey and then read below for the key spots along the route 75-kilometer (46.6-mile) journey along the Shimanami Kaido.

The route starts in Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and ends in Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. Rent a bike and get going on one of the most beautiful routes with plenty of perfect beaches and sea views. Get that perfect snap as you hit the halfway point or go for a quick swim to cool off before hitting the trail again.

[Shimanami Kaido] Best biking trail in Japan! | 80km Imabari to Onomichi adventure on Setonaikai

This is a 2 day 80km biking adventure across 6 islands connected by bridges with biking trail, starting from Imabari to Onomichi.

Lots of interesting things to do on the way instead of biking and enjoying the view. There was an Onsen place at the end of first day biking and it was definitely BLESS. We also saw dolphin training in very close distance and they are sooooo cute!

First time biking such long distance, it was so tiring for me but absolutely worth it! The view was so amazing without any editing!! Lots of thanks to QQ for making the trip happen and filming this :3

Can't wait to travel to Japan again next year!!

The Shimanami Kaido is a 70km (150km return) long toll road that connects Honshu to Shikoku, crossing over 6 islands and 7 of the worlds longest suspension bridges to do so. There is a bicycle-only route so you don't even have to interact with cars.

EXPLORING SHIMANAMI KAIDO しまなみ海道

The Shimanami Kaido crosses the Seto Inland Sea for 70 kilometers from Onomichi City through six islands to Imabari City on Shikoku. The whole course has a dedicated cycling route, keeping cyclists away from the traffic and close to the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea. You can customize your journey, choosing to cycle the whole course, or opting to complete small sections and return to Onomichi on a boat or a bus.

Japan Bikers Paradise - Shimanami Kaido Cycling Road

Shimanami Kaido - しまなみ海道 - The Japanese Bicycling Paradise

Went to Shimanami Kaido, one of the best places to bike in Japan maybe even the world, over the weekend. Its an amazing sea route that goes over 6 different islands as you cruise through the small seatowns. We started from Onomichi city which is on the Hiroshima side of Japan. If you are ever interested feel free to drop a comment or send a message, I completely recommend cycling it.

My friend James and I decided to do it all in a day due to the lack of hotels since we planned late. That meant we only got to do a little more than half of the route, but ended up doing around 90kilometers which is longer than the route itself.

SEASIDE BICYCLE RIDING on the Shimanami Kaido | Shikoku Travel Guide

We get the train from Kokura to Onomichi
- Hire some bikes
- Catch a ferry to the start point for 200yen or so
- Ride our bikes towards Innoshima
- Have an old man try to speak English to us outside a convenience store saying we stole his bike
- Realize my bike's front brakes are stuck 3/4 of the ride in after asking various people as to what was wrong with it
- Finish bike ride with only one brake, and extremely tired
- Catch ferry back to Onomichi
- Run for two trains (local train + Kodama Shinkansen) to Takamatsu
- Check into Takamatsu Hotel at like 11pm

TLDR; Check that your bike works properly or you will have a very bad day.

Japan Trip: Taking in the Fresh Sea Air on the Shimanami, Kaido Bridge, Onomichi, Hiroshima 08

Japan Trip: Taking in the Fresh Sea Air on the Shimanami, Kaido Bridge, Onomichi, Hiroshima 08 Moochan

Visitors who love the outdoors, island hopping, or cycling are strongly recommended to visit the Shimanami Kaido bridge located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. However, to be fair, Shimanami Kaido Bridge’s Honshu location is in Onomichi City with its Shikoku partner in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. This 60 kilometer bridge which spans over Seto Inland Sea also connects Honshu (Japan’s main island) with the island of Shikoku. In addition, bridge has ramps along the route for visitors to stop at one of the six islands (Mukaishima, Innoshima, Ikuchijima, Omishima, Hakatajima, and Oshima) in the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors can either drive or cycle across the bridge.

Many visitors, both domestic and international, who love to cycle, will enjoy travelling across this bridge via bicycle, experiencing the wind in the hair as they take in the beautiful sea scenery. Please note: the total bicycle route is 70 kilometers, including the bridge ramps. There are 14 different bicycle rental terminals along Shimanami Kaido Bridge. In addition to the main terminals at Onomichi Port and Sunrise Itoyama, visitors can rent bicycles from various terminals including Hakata Rental Cycle Terminal on Hakatajima Island, Shigei Nishi Port on Innoshima Island and so on. A deposit of 1000 yen is required. For adults (meaning junior high school students and older), the rental fee is 500 yen per day. For children (meaning elementary school and younger), the cost is 300 yen per day. Electric bicycles are available, but only for adults. Electric bicycles are 800 yen for 4 hours.

The islands have various accommodations, including minshuku (private residences turned into a bed and breakfast), camping grounds, and traditional hot spring (onsen) inns (ryokan) for visitors to spend the night. The view of Shimanami Kaido from one of the islands in the evening is just one of the beautiful sights visitors can experience.

Visitors looking for rest spots need not worry. The cycling route takes cyclists along restaurants and other rest areas the islands have. For motorists, there are various “service areas” on the expressway bridge where drivers can exit the car to stretch, eat, and take in the fresh sea air.

Please enjoy the attractions the islands hold. Among the most popular are Kosanji Temple and Museum on Ikuchijima Island, Flower Center in Innoshima Island, and Home of the Yoshihara Family (Very Important Cultural Property) on Mukaishima Island. In addition to the cultural aspects, in the summer, the islands have great beaches, annual firework festivals. Visitors can experiences thrilling and scenic boat rides such as the Tide Ride (a boat ride on the one of the fastest streams) in Oshima Island. And foodies are sure to enjoy the fresh seafood, caught in the local sea, as well as local, seasonal vegetables.

Cycling along the Shimanami Kaido Toll Bridge/Road is a new way to explore the islands of Seto Inland Sea. With the beautiful view of the water and the islands, cyclists from all over the world are sure to remember this Japanese cycling adventure!!
