FULL TRAVEL GUIDE & BUDGET PLANNER FOR CROATIA ➡️
TRYING TO FIND TRADITIONAL CROATIAN FOOD IN ZAGREB | #Croatia in 30 days
In Zagreb we taste Croatian food, beer & coffee and review the best dishes in Croatia. Strukli is our go to food choice in Zagreb... People told us Croatian cuisine was amazing and we'd have to hunt out some food very quickly, in particular Strukli while in Zagreb. Our Airbnb host explained about Zagorski Štrukli, which is from/famous in Zagreb, and why the dish should be high on our list of the best food to try in Croatia. Should note, it's proper spelling is Zagorski Štrukli.
Some of the landmarks we visited: Tkalčićeva Street, Upper Town (Gornji Grad), St. Mark's Church (Crkva sv. Marka), Ban Josip Jelačić Square, The Lotrščak Tower and Grič cannon, La Struk, Uspinjača (Zagreb Funicular), Museum of Broken Relationships, Gradec, Dolca Market

Truffle hunting in CROATIA (Istria) with my Dad! (Plus overnight in stunning 5* Villa Tina)

Find out more about our private tours throughout Croatia:

Truffle hunting is such a unique experience, and the Istrian region in Croatia is known for truffles! We went out with the Prodan family and their sweet pups, Stiv and Brum, to find some truffles in the forest. Mama Vanda made some incredible truffle dishes for us to try, and they were incredible. After an amazing day with the Prodans, we went back to a beautiful, nearby villa to spend the night, which was such a treat!

If you're interested in booking this incredible villa, here's Goran and Tina's direct contact:

*Tina and Goran also give amazing discounts in the winter months, which is a great time to visit Istria, because the weather is still mild and you can use the villa as a base to explore the whole region!

(We highly recommend this place, especially for group gatherings, having the pool, the outdoor space, huge terrace, beautiful bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms, the whole place was amazing!)

Croatian Food - Delicious meal in Zadar, Croatia Travel Video Transcript:

So it is time for actually lunch and dinner because it is the middle of the afternoon. Yeah. So we didn't really have a proper lunch today let's be honest. We were just kind of snacking at home before we left. Yeah. And we've been filming most of the day so we've worked up an enormous appetite. We are so ready to eat. Oh yes. So we have a favorite restaurant in the city.

So okay it would appear that the name is Konoba Skoblar so in we go. In we go.

Starting things off with the wine then. And we've become quite familiar with this one. Yesterday we were trying to figure out what hints can we smell and taste in here so let's try once again. I like how they give us a nice generous portion too. I know that is a big glass of wine. No stinginess. I think that is 200 mL.

So the hints I believe, same as yesterday, it is the same wine. I was going with black cherries and what was the other one? I think you said raisins. Raisins. Yes. I said black cherries. I think it has a bit of currants.

Okay guys the food is finally here and no surprises here. We've ordered the truffle gnocchi. This is our third time having this dish and we have not grown tired of it. It is so good. So it comes in a cream sauce with truffles. It is wonderful taken to a new level. Yeah. So you've got like the truffles in the sauce and then you have the real truffles on top and then you have like the grated cheese. It is just amazing. This is so good that I could be having a really bad day and if I came here and had this that would make it all better.

Okay so in we go for dish number two. Yes. What are we having? So we are having black risotto and that comes with cuttlefish. Cuttlefish. And my gosh that ink is something else. Look at that. I'm leaving smears on the side. Oh my gosh it is so good. Yeah, again it is really creamy and also the cuttlefish is so tender. It almost melts in your mouth. I thought it would be more chewy but it is not. And yeah, it is great to have a second pasta. It is like they really complement each other because their flavors are so different.

Initially we were planning to share one dessert because that was a lot of pasta but then the waiter came over and Sam was like I'll have one of each. So now he said do you want panna cotta do you want cheese cake and I was like I can't decide. So let's get both.

What is best? Oh my gosh. I love cheesecake. So cheesecake for the win? This was so good too. Like they're both really good but man. Okay let's be decisive here. Okay, I'll choose cheesecake. Haha.

Alright alright how are you feeling after that lunch / dinner? Bulging belly at the moment. That was 243 Kuna which was 32 Euros total. Two glasses of wine, two mains and two desserts. Now it is time to crawl into bed and pass out. Highly recommend it and yeah I'm so done. See you guys next time. Bye.

Our visit Zagreb travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (Croatian), top sightseeing tourist attractions and the city by day including visiting churches, parks, the old town, quirky neighborhoods, museums and a hockey game. We also cover off-the-beaten-path outdoor activities you won't find in a typical Zagreb tourism brochure, Zagreb itinerary or Zagreb, Croatia city tour also known as Zagreb, Hrvatska.

10 Things to do in Zagreb, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Our travels in Croatia brought us to Zagreb known for its lively street markets, vast green spaces, and varied architecture that spans numerous movements, we reached the capital and hit the ground running. In this video we’re going to show you some fun things to do in Zagreb, as well as share our favourite place for sampling the most delicious truffle dishes:

From the main square you have the Flower Market, and if you head up the steps, that leads to Zagreb’s Central Market.

Zagreb Cathedral is one the city’s main landmarks. This is the largest sacral building in the Gothic style southeast of the Alps, and it’s pretty easy to spot the spires wherever you are in the city.

Our walk through the Upper Town eventually lead us to Tkalčićeva. These days you’ll find a lively street lined with restaurants, cafes and bars.

We reached what may be the most memorable museum in the whole world: The Museum of Broken Relationships. The museum is a global crowd-sourced project that deals with heartbreak. Inside you’ll find curious objects with a corresponding story.

St. Mark’s Church bears the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left-hand side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right.

To enjoy city views of the Lower Town there are some great vantage points along the promenade.

On our way down from the Upper Town, we walked through Zagreb’s famed Stone Gate. Once the eastern gate into the medieval settlement now houses a small chapel.

Let’s take a break from all the sightseeing to introduce you to one of our favourite restaurants in Zagreb when it comes to truffle dishes

And craving more views of the city, we then went up Zagreb 360.

Known as the Green Horseshoe, this park was named after Milan Lenuci who came up with the idea of creating connected green spaces right in the downtown. The horseshoe is home to several museums, galleries and archives.

If you’re into hockey and you visit Zagreb during the season, you can catch a game in the city. We watched Medveščak Zagreb play.

And that’s it for our visit to Zagreb! We hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that you got a few ideas of things to see, eat and do on your own visit.

Croatian Food Review - Trying Dishes with Truffles in Zagreb, Croatia Travel Food Video Transcript:

Hello there. Our first restaurant meal here. Let's make it happen in Zagreb.

So you were sold by a couple of items. What were they? Everything with truffles. Everything with truffles. Polenta with truffles. Pasta with truffles. Let's go in.

It is time for lunch here in Zagreb and we found a really cool restaurant like right around the corner from our Airbnb. This place I believe is called Fotic (Bistro Fotic) but I can't be sure because I can't seem to pronounce anything correctly in Croatian. Um, but anyways today we figured we would showcase some Croatian dishes and we're specifically going to be focussing on anything and everything with truffles. So I believe Sam you got risotto. Yes. I got polenta. And yeah truffles are going to be like the main thing.

We get our red wine. We get our dry reds before the meal even comes and I believe this is the Plavac or Plavac grape and this is the most common wine we've found here in Croatia and it is really good.

We got a nice bread basket that showed up. It is still warm. This must be complimentary. It is and it looks like homemade bread.

We ordered one little salad. Trying to get some fresh veggies and greens in our system. So yeah if you just take a look here this is just it is called the seasonal salad so I guess it varies by what time of the year it is and we are very much into the fall. Yeah, so we're getting tomatoes, we have a little bit of cabbage and onion, we have it looks like some iceberg lettuce and then over here yeah it looks like arugula as well.

The food is here and it looks amazing. So like I mentioned earlier I ended up getting the polenta which is really cool. They kind of cooked it in like a circular fashion and then sliced it and in between I have like this red cabbage and also he came to the table and he brought his little truffle and he actually like sliced it onto my meal.

Time to try your main the risotto. Before I even try it I've just got to talk about the procedure of this whole thing. It was plated at the table with a saucepan and then they came and did the whole truffle grating business. Then he added parmesan cheese.

Let's try that. I'm going to make sure I get a piece of truffle. I'm going to dig down deep so I get a bit of everything here. And you got the risotto with prosciutto, pine nuts and truffles.

It is time to choose our dessert and they actually have a display case with all of the cakes back there. We're just going to share one slice because that was a lot of food and the one that has caught our attention, for both of us, is called the Sevitina Torta which has custard, chocolate, hazelnut and nutella.

Time for price point. So that came to 236 Kuna which was 30 Euros in total. And basically 15 per person and that was for two glasses of red wine, a salad to share, two mains and a dessert to share. So pretty good value and my gosh the food was excellent here. We'd highly recommend this place.

Trying Croatian Food in Split, Croatia

Come join us we try Croatian Food at a local restaurant (Konoba Fetivi) specializing in seafood dishes, risotto and mediterranean cuisine. It has often been our experience that the best recommendations for restaurants and foods worth trying in a new destination are from locals, so we were thrilled when our airbnb host recommended we try seafood and risotto at Konoba Fetivi. Overall, we ended up ordering quite a bit for our lunch in Croatia:

1) Local red wine
2) Pipi (Croatian orange soda)
3) Fried shrimp with lemon juice
4) Black risotto cuttlefish
5) White cheese risotto
6) Apple strudel but we wanted to try Rožata
7) Fig liqueur (local Croatian drink)

Trying Croatian Food in Split, Croatia Travel Video Transcript:

Alright guys so it is lunchtime here in Split. We just arrived yesterday and we were asking our airbnb host for recommendations for her favorite restaurants and this was one place she mentioned for seafood. It is called Konoba Fetivi. We've just arrived like as soon as they opened we were by the door. It has got a great little courtyard. This is maybe is this our first meal outside in a courtyard in 2018? It is finally warm enough. Just barely. Borderline. I still have my coat over my shoulders. It is like low teens. We've got some sunshine and blue skies. It feels rustic. We're going to enjoy some seafood.

Tell me about the drink you got. The name caught my attention. Pipi. Our waiter said it is like the Croatian fanta but even better. Better than fanta. And I have to agree. I had a sip too. I had a sip already. It is more juicy. It is like more fruity.

They have just brought out yeah all of the food. This is our appetizer. We got the fried shrimp and I love how they serve it.

This is a tile. This is like a tile off of a roof. Oh wow, that is what it is? That is the best. My house in South America used to have tiles like this.

Just some brown paper and then our shrimp. We doused it in lemon juice too. Perfect with lemon. A little bit of course sea salt on top.

We are going to move on to the risotto even though we have lots of shrimp to work with.

Okay now try the black one too. And I'll eat some of the black risotto. Some of the cuttlefish. Black squid ink. We've got some little shrimp, black pepper it looks creamy.

You can taste a little bit of the white wine. I like how creamy it is. I like the taste of the cuttlefish.

So dessert time. Dessert time. Well guys we ended up going with apple strudel. I know it is not the most local thing. What was the one that we wanted to get but they didn't have?

We wanted to try something called Rožata. Which is a local caramel pudding.

You can tell tonnes of apple in there.

Really good. Really juicy.

A little tipple. A little liquor. A little liquor and this is local date. Fig!

The color of your hair. And your moustache. And your beard. If you've ever had date or fig syrup. It has got that kind of taste and then potency of the alcohol. This is just a beautiful way to end off an awesome meal. Let's enjoy that cake. And then I've got to do a lot of walking after to burn. To burn off all of these calories. It has been a big meal.

Finished that meal. Time to assess the damage. That was 343 Kuna or 46 Euros. Not the cheapest meal but my gosh that was delicious. So that included the two risottos. That included the shrimp appetizer. That included the wine and your soft drink. The dessert drink. And the dessert of course. Overall a fantastic meal. We absolutely love that place. If you guys come here you've got to check it out for sure.

This is part of our Travel in Croatia video series showcasing Croatian food, Croatian culture and Croatian cuisine.

Come join us for pizza in croatia in this food review as we order a Croatian seafood pizza along with a local Istrian pizza in Pula, Croatia at Pizzeria Jupiter. Pizza in Croatia is a big deal, and very much a part of the local food scene, so with that in mind we confidently ordered two local specialities from one of the top pizza places in Pula.

1) Frutti di Mare (Croatian Seafood Pizza) featuring tomato, cheese, scampi, mussels, tuna, salted sardines, squid, garlic and cheese

2) Istriana pizza with tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, rucola and cherry tomatoes.

Pizza in Croatia Review - Trying Croatian Seafood and Istrian Pizza in Pula Travel Food Video Transcript:

Pizza in Croatia. That is the plan for today's lunch. And you're probably thinking Pizza? You're not in Italy order something local. But pizza is super popular here. We're basically like right across the sea from Italy. You've just got the Adriatic in between. So yeah, pizza is huge here and we're eating at a place called Jupiter Pizzeria. Apparently it is the top pizza place in the whole city. Yeah. We researched it. We did our research guys.

We're getting one local pizza and another seafood one because we're right by the coast. So I can't wait for that to arrive. We also ordered a glass of red wine. So this is shaping up to be a great meal.

Guys so the food has arrived. So so quickly. I think they just threw in our pizza as soon as we ordered it and check it out. This one is the frutti di mare. The seafood one. And honestly I'm going to have to read the ingredients because there is so many that I don't even remember. Yeah. There is a lot going on. So frutti di mare. This one has tomato, cheese, scampi. I don't know what scampi is. Mussels, tuna, salted sardines, squid and garlic. And cheese. Did I also say cheese? It has got lots of cheese.

Sam ready to introduce use to your pizza? Yes. We've been neglecting this poor thing over here. And this is the Istriana one. Let's read off the ingredients. The menu. Because yeah it has a lot. So it comes with tomato, mozzarella, prosciutto, arugula, rucola, cherry and tomatoes. Haha. It is a challenging word for you over there. Yeah. That looks so good. Look at those colors.

I'm just totally in my happy place right now. Eating pizza. Pizza is one of my all-time favorite foods. It is what I grew up liking the most as a kid. And I mean my tastebuds have evolved but I still like a good pizza to me is right near the top of the food chain. And you know what is another reason to be in your happy place? Why is that? The weather. Yeah. You've got sunshine. I know I'm wearing shorts.

time for price point. Oh my gosh this was one of those meals where my belly is bulging out of my pants now. Yeah, we had no room for dessert. Oh, not even close. What we're going to do guys is we're going to take you out for gelato but after we walk around for a while. Actually we're going to take ourselves out for gelato. Locally that came to 136 Kuna and that is 21 US dollars. And to be honest that was outstanding value.

You've got ice cream all over your mustache. Oh my gosh it is so good I'm just pigging out on it. Anyways these were just a Euro. Really nice ice cream and now we are officially saying ciao. So we'll see you guys next time. Have a good day.
