Costa Rica’s Blue Zone | The Secrets To Happiness and Healthy Living

Richard is the owner/broker of Coldwell Banker Tamarindo, and the founder of the vacation rental company Please get in touch if we can help.

Summary
People just seem to be healthy, happier, and enjoy life more in Costa Rica. Why is that? You hear more laughter here than anywhere. Since the 1990s Costa Rica has been my happy place. Today I try to explain why.

1. Everyone is here because they want to be here
In general the only expats living in Costa Rica are ones who have chosen to be here. No-one is here because of work commitments, or family obligations. They are here because they want to be here. The overwhelming feeling is of good energy, contentment. HAPPINESS.

2. What is a Blue Zone?
In 2004 Dan Buettner from National geographic identified 5 ‘blue zones’ around the world where people lived to a ripe old age, had lower levels of obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. He examined diet, lifestyle, exercise and other factors to determine the reasons.

article/5-blue-zones-where-the-worlds-health iest-people-live

3. Nicoya Peninsula, Blue Zone
The Nicoya peninsula is an 80 mile long stretch of Costa Rica coastline encompassing Tamarindo, Nosara,
Montezuma and Coco. Here, 1 in 250 people live to 100 years old, compared to 1 in 4000 in North America. More importantly, the older generation seem to live without medications and ailments

0/08/12/what-costa-ricas-blue-zone-can-teac h-us-about-the-future-of-wellbeing--longevity /?sh=202347e452d8

4. Sunshine, sunshine sunshine
Weather is a very important factor. Living just 10 degrees North of the equator Costa Rica has a very pleasant sunny and hot year round climate. This is an important factor in outdoor healthy living. Coming from England I know how dreary weather brings your spirits down. Amazing sunsets every evening just fill you with good energy.

5. Diet
You don't see many obese people in Costa Rica. The Costa Rica diet is very simple, food is made from fresh ingredients, and less meat is consumed. There is little to no processed food. Fresh fruits are cheap and plentiful. Roadside vendors are everywhere with the freshest fruit. If you see one, stop and try it. People enjoy fresh juices- Tamarindo, Chan, Payapaya , pineapple, Guanabana, starfruit. Again most juices are made from fresh fruits, not processed, long life or from concentrate . Water can be drunk from the tap, and has higher levels of calcium and magnesium so you have built in vitamins and minerals. Have you tried gallo pinto and eggs for breakfast? Maybe rice and beans in the morning wasn't on your wishlist, but it really is the breakfast of champions.

6. Exercise and sports
Whatever your lifestyle at home, in Costa Rica people seem to exercise more. Even if it is just a walk on the beach, tennis, yoga, surfing, sailing, golf. We spend more time in beach clothes, so we are motivated to stay more in shape. There are so many things to do right on your doorstep. This morning I played golf, had a gallo pinto in a soda (modest local restaurant) and was still in my office by 9am.

7. No pollution
Here at the beach there is almost no pollution. No factories, few cars on the roads, no traffic jams. Fresh ocean breezes.

8. Faith and family
Another aspect identified in the blue zone was the importance of faith and the family. Older Costa Ricans are looked after by family, not put into homes. In Tamarindo alone there are half a dozen churches. Being surrounded by love and people that care for you adds to that quality of life. Translated to our expat lives, if you live in Costa Rica be assured that your family and friends will visit at every opportunity

9. Enjoy the little things
Some of my friends that have a rock star lifestyle in some of the best hotels in the world stayed in Black Stallion in Tamarindo in a modest tree house, with monkeys in the trees, and had the best time ever. You don't need an ostentatious lifestyle. Live happy for less.

Who are Kara and Nate?!
Watch our documentary here:

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small printing business from the spare bedroom of our apartment.

We discovered the world of “travel hacking” while planning our honeymoon & became addicted ;)

So after 2 years of obsessively saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world.

Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we ran out of money and went back home to “normal life.” We started this channel to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with living on the road and found a new passion for capturing our travels through video. So we did everything we could to keep going.

4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time!

After ~2 years of van life, we are back to full time international traveling! And now we are finding the best adventures the world has to offer :)

We are incredibly grateful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. ???????????? Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey!

We really do not know much about the country apart from the classic news related to gang violence. So let's go! Comayagua, the mountains, La Ceiba, the Caribbeans ...

We hope you enjoy the ride! and next week we go to Honduras!

Have a good week and untill next Saturday, Take care

Nick & Mathilde

TOP 5 BEST NEW CRUISE SHIPS IN 2023! (ft Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, MSC, Disney, Virgin)

Watch the top 5 best new cruise ships coming out in 2023! Including en exclusive look at the world's new largest cruise ship, the most expensive vessel ever built, and industry-first cruise ship features!

Royal Caribbean moves on from its Oasis-Class ships, the Wonder of the Seas (the current largest cruise ship in the world), the Oasis, Allure, Harmony, and Symphony of the Seas, to a brand-new ship class that will outsize it. We're talking about the iconic Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's newest ship class since the Quantum-Class, Odyssey, Quantum, Anthem, and Ovation of the Seas. Celebrity Cruises will also add a fourth Edge-Class ship in 2023 (Celebrity Ascent, sister ship of Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Edge, and Celebrity Beyond).

After Carnival Cruise Line has recently launched its brand-new and very exciting Carnival Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration cruise ships with the first Roller Coasters at Sea, it is finally ready to launch the Carnival Jubilee on Carnival's 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary!

Richard Branson's Cruise line, the adults-only Virgin Voyages, is excited to debut the Brillian Lady in 2023, a sister ship to the Scarlet Lady, the Valiant Lady, and the Resilient Lady.

Princess Cruises will present its newest flagship class (the Sphere Class with the Sun Princess) and so will Holland America Line, Cunard Cruises, and Disney! Disney Cruise Line will acquire Dream Cruises' massive Global Dream, one of the world's largest cruise ship classes, its first ship acquisition ever. This will be Disney's newest ship since the Disney Wish, which was recently inaugurated in 2022!

Another cruise line with an impressive new lineup next year is MSC Cruises. After launching the Seaside Plus Class's MSC Seashore (sister ship to the MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview) and the MSC Virtuosa, from Meraviglia-Class, in 2021, they will launch a brand new World Class (MSC World Europa!). This will be the world's tallest cruise ship with 22 decks - and it will offer pretty cheap cruises and affordable cruise vacations!

Norwegian Cruise Line will also grow its Prima Class of vessels, which currently includes the spectacular Norwegian Prima, the only cruise ship in the world with a three-story Go Cart race track! The Norwegian Viva will be a sister ship of the Norwegian Prima and will be released in 2023 for Caribbean Cruises. Many of the ships presented in this list will sail from American Ports such as Galveston, Texas, Miami, Orlando, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, or even New York City for cruises to Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and more. Some will also sail in the Mediterranean for cruises to Spain, Italy, Greece, and more!
