Costa Rica Travel : La Fortuna River and Waterfalls : Rainforest Adventure

Welcome Back,

This episode we are getting more comfortable in Costa Rica and the La Fortuna Area and exploring what the dense Costa Rican Rainforest has to offer. With our lodging at Rancho Cerro Azul in the La Fortuna Area being primely located, we have plenty of access to much of the easy to access outdoorsy features that it has to offer. This adventure we visit El Salto La Fortuna which is a downriver portion of the La Fortuna waterfall. This is a free local attraction complete with breathtaking river views, a sketchy walk, a rope swing and plenty of space for plenty of tourists to decent upon. Right in the parking location of the La Fortuna Rope Swing attraction are friendly locals grilling up some delicious foods for the hungry and famished traveler to partake on.

The next portion includes visiting Trev's favorite portion of traveling, tourist things. Or in this case La Fortuna Waterfalls. This attraction weeds out many tourists while still attracting the fittest and most determined of them. La Fortuna waterfalls in down an apx 500 step path that leads to the bottoms of the falls. This is where tiktokers and YouTubers alike like to show up early and sit for hours in front of la Fortuna waterfalls for the perfect shot. Not Ti, too cold. However just around the corner to the La Fortuna waterfall is a nice shallower portion with lush foliage, fish, and a kid/family-friendly area to relax. As you head back up from the base of La Fortuna waterfall, positively famished from the grueling (or not so) 500 steps back up to the start, you can always stop for a bite to eat at their Rainforest Cafe, complete with tourist appropriate simple foods.

Of course, after visiting the infamous La Fortuna waterfalls in Costa Rica, it only makes sense to stop by and watch some Sloths, because Pura Vida beetches. unbeknownst to us, Sloths are essentially impossible to spot, luckily for only $45 per person, you can hire a guide with killer binoculars to find those hard to spot Slots, Hawks and Toucans who love to hide in plain sight in the dense jungle. However, as you spend your time on the sloth walk, you will notice that they are cute and worth the cost to protect the adorable species.

To liven or slow things down, we head to the world-famous (according to them) Baldi's hot springs just north of the La Fortuna area. Baldi's self-proclaimed cleanest hot springs and largest in the area, and it's hard to imagine a larger amusement park, with its sprawling layout of several hot springs with waters of varying temperatures and even a kids area with tepid bathwater and a play area.

My perfect La Fortuna Itinerary | Review & Guide

#LaFortunaItinerary #ThingstodoLaFortuna #ArenalTrips

Wrapping up 4 days in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, I wanted to do a quick review and also include what would be my perfect itinerary for La Fortuna and Arenal if I could have my time back.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in La Fortuna. The climate is great. Sure, it does rain a bit but it doesn't have the stifling heat that Costa Rica's coast has. It's peaceful. You wake up to a crazy amount of birdsong. There's loads of stuff to do from volcano treks, waterfalls, hot springs and zip lining. Essentially the whole of La Fortuna is set up for tourism so it's super easy to organise various trips and everyone is incredibly helpful.

If you're in Costa Rica I would highly recommend making the trip to La Fortuna. Personally, I would visit Arenal/La Fortuna after the coast so that you have some contrast both in terms of climate and in terms of how relaxing it can be.

Here's my perfect itinerary for La Fortuna over 4 days. As you can see, there's loads of things to do in La Fortuna:

Day 1: Rio Celeste. A full day trip about 1 hour and 45 minutes from La Fortuna. It involves a hike to the river and waterfalls where the water is, well, a crazy colour. Turquoise, baby blue water. The photos and videos almost look fake.

Day 2: Ziplining. Sky Adventures are the most well known company in the area but you have a number to choose from. The zip lines themselves are very high and very long, some are 170m high and 800m long, giving you an incredible view of the surrounding area.

You could also go white water rafting - we actually bumped into a group that had just returned from white water rafting and they were very impressed!

Day 3: Mistico Hanging Bridges. Get there early so that you are the first ones in the park and take your time at the first bridge (it has the best views). Incredibly peaceful and if you're lucky you'll be able to see Arenal Volcano over the rainforest canopy.

Follow this up with La Fortuna Waterfall in the afternoon. You can go to the waterfall in the morning but it might be too cold to really enjoy. The free waterfalls are very close to the main La Fortuna waterfall so you can easily do both in a couple of hours.

Day 4: Hot Springs. We went to Tabacón Resort & Spa which is one of the more premium hot springs, but you do have multiple options. Just relax and soak yourself in the natural volcanic thermal spas. Again, you can also do the free ones either as a cheaper option or in addition to the paid hot springs.

And enjoy!

Caña Negro lets you take a relaxing safari boat to see its many animal inhabitants. You can also check out Tortuguero National Park or see sloths on the Bogarin Trail. One of the best things to do in La Fortuna if you want to see everything it has to offer is Arenal National Park. It’s the best place to start because you’ll see many famous sites. These include Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal.

La Fortuna has hanging bridges that sit over its beautiful jungles and let you watch wildlife from on high. One of the best places to see them is in the Mistico Arenal Park. Years of volcanic activity are part of what makes La Fortuna such a popular destination. It has a wide range of hot springs and warm pools to help you melt your worries away. Thrill-seekers will love flying through the jungle like Tarzan. They can go ziplining or jump off the El Sato rope swing. La Fortuna also has rivers with rapids that are large enough to travel down on a raft or inner tube.

La Fortuna is more than a jungle thanks to spots like La Fortuna Town. It’s full of delicious restaurants and a perfect place to meet the locals. Most tours of La Fortuna take you to popular tourist spots like Arenal Volcano, but a few are more specialized. You can go on one that will help you learn about the process of making coffee, chocolate, or both.

La Fortuna, Costa Rica Budget Travel Vlog | Arenal Volcano, Rio Celeste, Hot Springs

La Fortuna offers so much variety when it comes to things to do and see in Costa Rica! We spent four days in La Fortuna and enjoyed every minute of it, especially because everything was so affordable! The local food was so flavorful and being immersed in such lush nature was absolutely breath-taking. If you're lucky, you might catch a view of the Arenal Volcano when it's not hiding behind the clouds. We were able to see the sunset over the volcano and it was a sight like no other! La Fortuna is amazing overall. Don't get us started on the waterfalls and the sky blue waters - watch for yourself! If you enjoy this video, please be sure to SUBSCRIBE for future content; we greatly appreciate it!

The Hertz/Firefly Car Rental in San Jose Costa Rica provided the WORST customer service we have ever experienced from a car rental place (They gave away the automatic car we reserved, only gave us an option to drive a manual car which we were unable to do, and even if we were able to drive manual they increased the daily rental price 10-fold).

We recommend you look elsewhere for a car rental ( or check out our truly AMAZING Uber driver and friend named ALEJANDRO who drove us all over Costa Rica.

Watch this video to see how we spent 4 days in Costa Rica for $439/pp. Prices can of course vary depending on dates, and the number of people you travel with. This is just to give you an idea!

Is La Fortuna Waterfall worth $18 entry? | Angry people on Trip Advisor

#LaFortunaWaterfall #Arenal #CostaRica

As part of our trip to La Fortuna in Costa Rica's Alajuela province, we visited the La Fortuna Waterfall (Catarata Fortuna in Spanish).

La Fortuna Waterfall is situated in an ecological reserve that is part of the Arenal Volcano National park and is managed/operated by a non-profit called ADIFORT (Asociación de Desarrollo Integral de La Fortuna or Integral Development Association of La Fortuna). It's around 5.5km South West of La Fortuna town or less than 10 minutes in a car.

After visiting both the natural hot springs at Tabacón as well as the Mistico Hanging Bridges, we wanted to see whether one of the most well known attractions of La Fortuna lived up to the name!

The Trip Advisor reviews of La Fortuna Waterfall are a mixed bag. One one hand there are many reviews stating how beautiful the waterfall is and that is a 'must see'. On the other hand there are a good amount of Trip Advisor reviews complaining about the $18 UD entrance fee ($5 for children) to La Fortuna waterfall. Furthermore, that the hike down ~530 steps to the waterfall made it inaccessible or difficult for people. The negative review of the waterfall were often followed up with advice to visit the free waterfalls less than 3km away and on the way back to La Fortuna.

Naturally we wanted to compare whether paying the entrance fee and hiking to La Fortuna was worth it, or whether the free waterfall in La Fortuna was better value!

For comparison:

- The La Fortuna waterfall is on a 210 acre reserve, 510 metres above sea level and surrounded by tropical rainforest. The waterfall itself is 70 metres tall and is surrounded by a steep sided gorge. The plunge pool its large and you're able to swim in it, although if you get too close to the waterfall there tends to be a man with a whistle to usher you back to the rocks around the edge. There is also a smaller and calmer pool that runs off the main plunge pool that you can swim in (the whole thing is part of Fortuna River). In terms of facilities it has free parking, a restaurant, bathroom and look out spot at the top before the stairs. There are also tour operators offering a La Fortuna Waterfall Tour, although unless you are really interested in the local fauna, these tend to be quite expensive for what they are!

- The free waterfalls in La Fortuna are situated under a small bridge that passes over a river on the way from La Fortuna to the main waterfall. There aren't any facilities and it isn't what you might consider a classic waterfall. The waterfall itself is only 3m tall and the plunge pool is around 10m in Diameter. Having said that, the water is not a cold, there is a rope swing and the you get more sun whereas at La Fortuna waterfall the water can be reasonably cold and due to the gorge/canyon it doesn't receive a lot sun. Plus the free waterfalls seem to be more relaxed and somewhere you could spend a longer time at.

Costa Rica MUST SEE: Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges | La Fortuna Rainforest Experience

Visiting the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges is a thrilling way to experience the rainforest in Costa Rica! You are so many meters above the ground and literally in the midst of clouds walking over and through treetops in this nature preserve. This activity is for those who are not afraid of heights! You are surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of many birds and animals that inhabit the rainforest. As expected in a rainforest, there is the occasional rain shower. However, the sound of the rain adds to the entire ambiance and creates an immersive experience in the cloud forest. It was so much fun crossing over all the hanging bridges that were featured in this park and we even saw a small waterfall! In some cases, you might get lucky and catch a glimpse of the Arenal volcano when it is less foggy outside. You can opt for a guided walking tour or do a self-guided tour since there are many signs all around that describe the details of each of the hanging bridges. It took us a little less than 2 hours to complete the hike through the treetops. This was a cool treetop rainforest adventure that we would recommend if you are visiting Costa Rica!

Today we’re going to do the combination tour of the hanging bridges and the La Fortuna waterfall in Arenal. We’re going to go with Jacamar Naturalist Tours, and this is a combination and it also includes lunch so we should have a really nice walk down to the waterfall and the hanging bridges, should be a really fun day.
We’re here at the Mistico Hanging Bridges and here actually by Lake Arenal. Behind me well arenal Volcano is a little covered in clouds but we’re going to go on a couple hour hike going through I think 13 bridges through the rainforest so hopefully we’ll see lots of cool wildlife and get some nice views.
We’ve been walking for about 1 hour and we finally reached the first hanging bridge and this is one of the longest in the Mistico Hanging Bridges walk. We’ve seen lots of cool trees, lots of plants, some monkeys so hopefully we’ll see some more wildlife, it’s been a very nice walk so far.
We’re walking on one of the hanging bridges and our guide just found a viper which is a common snake found in the Arenal area so let’s go check it out.
We’re visiting the La Fortuna waterfall, this is a beautiful waterfall in the La Fortuna area. It’s only about a 15 minute drive from town, it’s very popular it’s one of the most popular activities and we’ll show you guys why in just a second.

La Fortuna Waterfall Hike | Most Visited Waterfall in Costa Rica

La Fortuna waterfall hike. It’s the most visited waterfall in Costa Rica. Hike to La Fortuna Waterfall, La Fortuna waterfall Costa Rica. Most visited waterfall in Costa Rica.

Arguably the most visited waterfall in the whole country, La Fortuna waterfall is a must see in Costa Rica. Dropping 246 feet into a bright blue pool, this waterfall paints a perfect postcard of the Costa Rican jungle. As it’s just 6 km outside of the town of La Fortuna, the waterfall makes for a great 2–3-hour trip.

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of the most visited waterfalls in all of Costa Rica. Located in the Alajuela Province, the waterfall is fed by the Arenal River, which travels through the rainforest in the Arenal Mountain range until it drops around 200 feet over a cliff.

There is a big parking lot as well as bathrooms, a small cafe, and a souvenir store at the entrance. Parking is free. The La Fortuna Waterfall entrance fee is $18 for adults and $5 for children.

After you pay your ticket at the entrance office, walk across the bridge to get to the trail head. You’ll see a gift shop and bathrooms and beyond that is an observation platform with a great view of the waterfall.

Since the waterfall current is strong and there are rocks in the plunging cascade pool, it is too dangerous for swimming. However, there are calmer and safer pools downstream.

There are different sections of the stairs heading towards the falls. It starts off as paved asphalt and throughout the hike changes from cut rocks, to metal, to wood. Along the staircase are secure handrails, and there are a few benches scattered throughout the hike.

At the base of the waterfall is a jade-colored pool surrounded by mossy hillsides, huge boulders, and a jungle landscape.
