Colonial Architecture & White Beaches - Things to do in Cartagena (Exploring Colombia Ep.01)

In the first episode from Colombia I’m not only introducing you to the best things to do in Cartagena, I also give a couple of Insider Tips you can use for your own trip!

For the first week of my time in Colombia I wanted to dive into the history and see the main sights in the colonial town of Cartagena, therefore I put together a list of the best things to do in Cartagena and went out to explore. Beyond the popular sights and touristic spots I found some great restaurants, went to a few picturesque Carribbean islands and discovered a beach town which is still fairly unknow by like minded people who are backpacking in Colombia.

From the historic city center to recommendable food places this video is meant to also help you find your way around and plan your stay in the area of Cartagena. All my tips can also be found on my website, this includes sights as well as restaurants and hotels in Cartagena.

In the next episode we are going to explore the various sights in and around the city of Medellin and take a look at the violent past of the country as well as at the transformation of it.

Things to do in Cartagena (Cololmbia) as shown in this episode:
Centro Historico / Old Town & Free Tour
Old City Wall / Walled City
Getsemani neighborhood
Volcano El Totumo
Castillo San Felipe de Barajas / Fortress of San Felipe
Paraiso Secreto on Isla Grande, Islas de Rosario
Rincon del Mar
Isla Mucura, Isla Tintipan, Islote at Islas de San Bernardo

— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.

For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

Top 12 Things To Do In Medellin | Touristic Attractions (Vlog)

We show you the real Medellin from an Expat perspective!
???? Sneak Peek Services ????

We all start out as tourists when we visit a new country. When we came to Colombia we wanted to learn more about the culture and the people. It was inevitable to get lots and lots of tips from locals which suggested us where we have to go next. They all talked about Guatape, Comuna 13 and more!

This time we had a friend from Switzerland visiting us. Being in Colombia for the first time, we of course had to show her the beauty of it and the cool activities the city has to offer. We took her to the top touristic attractions. And let me tell you she was more than impressed!

In this video we went to:
El Centro
Comuna 13
Guatape
Parque Arvi
Pueblito Paisa
Jardin Botanico (Botanical Garden)

All the above mentiones places we have been to, are very touristic but cultural at the same time. Each of the places have their own story and give you a great insight of the Paisa culture.

Take Pueblito Paisa for instance. Pueblito Paisa is a replica town of how traditional towns in Antioquia looked like in the past. There are still towns that look similar to those houses even today. In El Retiro or Guatape you can find similar looking houses. But if someone doesn't have the time to visit those towns, Pueblito Paisa is perfect and on top of that is has a beautiful over view of the whole city of Medellin. From the top of Pueblito Paisa you can see the big skyscrapers in Poblado till the small houses in the barrios.

It was a lot of fun to show our Swiss friend around in the city that we call our home. By the way, all the activities are family friendly too. And make sure you always carry enough water and sunscreen with you!

Even though we did those things already several times, it never gets boring and usually after a while there are new things to discover at each place.

Watch the whole video in order to see how the mentioned places look like and stay till the end of the video, in order to get some more tips for other touristic attractions that we didn't show in the video.

Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

Cartagena, City of Death...A History Tour

In this episode we travel to Cartagena, Colombia. The history of this city is something that truly surprised me. I had always thought Cartagena was a party city for centuries. Pirates, Sailors, Soldiers, and Bootleggers all traveling to Cartagena to partake in the world's longest running party.

I had no idea the Spanish Inquisition was perpetrated right here in Cartagena. The death and torture inflicted on the population of this magical city was unprecedented and left me feeling like I had missed something in school. We also visit the Castillo de San Felipe, a historic Spanish colonial fort in the heart of the city. Castillo de San Felipe is the largest fort in the spanish colonies of South America and the entire world.

After visiting the castle, we went to the house of Rafael Nunez. Rafael Nunez is widely considered to be the father of modern day Colombia. He lived in Cartagena and his house has been preserved and turned into a museum honoring his accomplishments.

Our final stop was to the Museo Naval del Caribe, or the Naval Museum of Cartagena. It was fascinating to learn about the maritime history of Cartagena. The museum also details many of the wars that were fought by Colombia and the wider Caribbean. There are exhibits showcasing the maritime history of the Caribbean going back to before the colonization of the New World.

I never thought I'd want to go to Cartagena again because I thought it was just parties, beaches, tourists, and clubs. I was sadly mistaken on my second time around. We saw many different sights, ate great food, met amazing people, and it was overall inexpensive. From the beaches, the volcanoes, and the pink salt lakes. There is so much to see that I would not mind coming back for another trip!

We went to Playa Blanca, Salinas de Galerazamba, Toured with Beyond Colombia's free walking tour, and Palenque.

Cartagena Colombia in 3 days

The city of Cartagena is a major port founded in 1533, located on the northern coast of Colombia in the Caribbean Coast Region. With about 1 million inhabitants, it’s the 5th largest city in Columbia and the end of the San Blas Sailing Trip if you come from Panamá. It’s perfect to relax for a couple of days with tours to the famous Playa Blanca (White Beach) or the nearby Volcano ???? (El Totumo) with its healthy mud pool. The food and the nightlife in Cartagena is also excellent and cheap and a walk through the old town to view all the murals is even free.

Welcome to Colombia

Cartagena Colombia ( also known as “La Heroica”, was founded on June 1, 1533 and declared a Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1984 ( Currently, Cartagena is a Colombian tourist destination visited by people from all over the world thanks to its architectural beauty, its history and culture, and the great amount of experiences and activities to do in Cartagena.
The Historic Center of Cartagena is the main tourist place of the city. There you can enjoy a historical and colonial experience visiting the main churches, theaters, restaurants and buildings of Cartagena. Explore Cartagena Colombia. We're in love ????

We spend the day exploring the beautiful city of Cartagena and have come up with a list of things for you to do!

Cartagena is on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and therefore has lots of amazing beaches but also tonnes of culture. We start the day at the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas exploring the old fortress (castle) with it’s amazing views and old tunnels.

We then make our way into the up and coming and gentrifying area of Getsemani. It’s a vibrant area full of street art, many restaurants and squares that come alive at night. While here we explore the streets and also grab a bite to eat while having a Colombian beer.

Later we head to the old walled city of Cartagena to see what it has to offer. We buy some bracelets and then discover some music and dancers performing in a square. We also grab a Colombian coffee at the the coolest little coffee shop/book store in Cartagena called Abaco Libros Y Cafe.

Lastly we try to find the best views over the city to watch the sunset. Unfortunately the rooftop at the Movich is closed for a private event so we end up across the street at the Sofia Hotel.

Cartagena, Colombia is the sum of its incredible parts; its colonial, republican and modern architecture, the temptation of its vibrant nightlife, its cultural festivals, exuberant landscapes, magnificent beaches, outstanding gastronomic offerings and its important hotel and tourism infrastructure. It is a fantastic city that guards the secrets of its history in its walls and balconies, its buildings and its narrow, cobbled streets.
Framed by its beautiful bay, Cartagena de Indias is one of the best preserved and most enchanting cities in the Americas.

Cartagena de Indias, one of the most popular destinations on the rise in the world according to TripAdvisor

Cartagena began as a small fishing town that was colonised by Spanish, British, and French. One of the original towns sharing a rich history of pirates, independence, and worldwide importance in the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Cartagena has become one of the greatest tourist attractions in South America. Cartagena is full of beautiful beaches and natural places all around. The city is famous for its many historical sites, and incredible architecture. Cartagena gathers the best of a calm Caribbean town, with an artsy scene, and many things to do.

Castillo San Felipe De Barajas (San Felipe Castle), Cartagena:

The Castillo San Felipe de Barajas is a fortress in the city of Cartagena, Colombia. The castle is located on the Hill of San Lázaro in a strategic location, dominating approaches to the city by land or sea. It was built by the Spanish during the colonial era. Construction began in the year 1536, and it was originally known as the Castillo de San Lázaro, It was expanded in 1657.

Wander through the tunnels of the San Felipe de Barajas Castle to discover the interior of the “guardian of Cartagena.” The Spaniards sought to fend off British attacks, and in 1657 they finished building this fortress on the hill of San Lazaro, thus taking control of the only access point to the city from the mainland. Great pictures of the bay can be taken from the castle.

Getsemani, Cartagena:

Getsemaní, the outer walled town, is less obviously impressive than Cartagena's old city but has some charming parts and is well worth exploring. In recent years it has been the focus of Cartagena's exploding gentrification and growing hotel industry, and boasts excellent bars, restaurants and cafes, as well as some superb street art on its derelict buildings.

The plaza in front of the Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad is a massive draw for locals and travelers alike come sundown, when street food vendors set up their stalls and a crowd of revelers sticks around until well after midnight.

Old Town, Cartagena:

Without doubt, Cartagena's old city is its principal attraction, particularly the inner walled town, consisting of the historical districts of El Centro and San Diego. It is a real gem of colonial architecture, packed with churches, monasteries, plazas, palaces and mansions with their famous overhanging balconies and shady patios.

The best approach to experiencing the Old Town is to wander leisurely, savoring the architectural details, street life and local snacks along the way.

Island Getaway in Barú, Colombia, with Leanne

Leanne, Flight Attendant at Air Transat and travel enthusiast, brings you to discover her top spots in Isla Barú - a gorgeous, luscious and paradise-worthy island in Colombia, and surrounding islands. Its beautiful beaches, turquoise waters and diverse fauna and flora makes it a perfect destination to unwind and soak in nature's beauty.

Follow her as she takes off by boat from Cartagena's port to reach Rosario Island, a pretty archipelago in the middle of bright turquoise waters. She'll share the best snorkelling spot in the area, and a secluded beach where you can reach a sand bar that makes you look like you can walk on water. Then, she navigates to Isla Baru, where she visits a bird sanctuary full of local species including flamingoes, spatulas, eagles, herons, storks, parrots and toucans. She ends this perfect day on Playa Blanca, a very popular beach among locals where she watches the sunset.
