Ever since traveling for me meant to be active. I was taking on new outdoor challenges every year from skiing in the Alps to rafting in South America, Biking trips in North America and several multi-day trekking adventures in places like Patagonia, Peru or Kyrgyzstan. This year I was ready for the next step: climbing one of the seven summits. When G Adventures asked me to become part of their Wanderers program I saw my chance to take on the highest mountain in Africa as one of their brand ambassadors….but little did I know how hard this endeavour would be….
Unlike other trips this one started actually 5 months before the first day of trekking…I worked on my fitness, changed my diet and did a lot of research on Mt. Kilimanjaro. I decided to take on the Lemosho route which is 56 kilometers long and takes altogether 8 days - my decision was based on 2 reasons: one was the fact that the itinerary of this route is the best for acclimatization of the body to the high altitude and the resulting high summit success rate (which is at 96% for G Adventures), the other reason is the beauty of the route which is often described as the most picturesque and spectacular of all popular routes.
Located in North East Tanzania Mount Kilimanjaro is with 5895m the highest mountain in Africa which makes it one of the seven summits. Apart from that it is also the highest free standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and „Shira“. The highest point is located on Kibo - after the independence of Tanzania it was named Uhuru Peak in 1964 - which is Kiswhali and translates into „freedom Peak“.

Climbing Kilimanjaro | The Tallest Mountain in Africa - Lemosho Route
Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free standing mountain and the highest mountain in Africa, making it one of the Seven Summits. Kilimanjaro's peak, named Uhuru Point, is 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is unique for many reasons. From the trailhead to the summit, climbers find themselves weaving through several distinct climate zones, starting in the rain forest and ending in the arctic zone. It is said that the journey from the gate to the peak is like traveling from the equator to Antarctica in a matter of days.
Ultimate Kilimanjaro® specializes in guiding climbers on the Lemosho route. The Lemosho route is considered the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, granting panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. The 8 day variation is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate.
The route approaches from the west, beginning with a long drive from the village of Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rain forest to Shira Ridge. Then the path crosses the Shira Plateau in a pleasant, relatively flat hike before traversing underneath Kilimanjaro’s Southern Ice Field. Finally, the route ascends to the summit from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route.
Kilimanjaro is very popular with both experienced hikers and first time adventurers. Scaling the mountain requires no technical skills or equipment, such as rope, harness, crampons or ice axe. Therefore, it is a hiking or “walk up” peak, not a mountaineering or climbing peak.

Hiking Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route

We began this journey on 21st June 2023. Throughout our trek, we recorded as much of this adventure as possible to share our experiences, challenges, and the breathtaking moments we encountered along the way (including our engagement!). From lush rainforests to the alpine desert and the final push to the summit, we'll show you it all!

Kilimanjaro Climb Lemosho Route 2024
A 50 min video showing a team climbing Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho route. The guides and porters were from Altezza travel. The climb took place in February 2024. The video is accompanied at the end by some of the best photographs that were taken during the climb.
