The Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens aka Metropolis (Athens, Greece)

Known to the locals as Metropolis, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens is a stunning sight, sitting in the center of Athens. You may want to snap a picture and move along, stare at it's facade or go the whole hog and see what lurks inside!

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation (Greek: Καθεδρικός Ναός Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου) popularly known as the Mētrópolis, is the cathedral church of the Archbishopric of Athens and all Greece.

Construction of the Cathedral began on Christmas Day, 1842 with the laying of the cornerstone by King Otto and Queen Amalia.

Workers used marble from 72 demolished churches to build the Cathedral's immense walls. Three architects and 20 years later, it was complete. On May 21, 1862, the completed Cathedral was dedicated to the Annunciation of the Mother of God '(Ευαγγελισμός της Θεοτόκου)' by the King and Queen. The Cathedral is a three-aisled, domed basilica that measures 130 feet (40 m) long, 65 feet (20 m) wide, and 80 feet (24 m) high. Inside are the tombs of two saints killed by the Ottoman Turks during the Ottoman period: Saint Philothei and Patriarch Gregory V.

Saint Philothei built a convent, was martyred in 1559, and her bones are still visible in a silver reliquary. She is honored for ransoming Greek women enslaved in Ottoman Empire's harems.

Gregory V the Ethnomartyr, Patriarch of Constantinople, was hanged by order of Sultan Mahmud II and his body thrown into the Bosphorus in 1821, in retaliation for the Greek uprising on March 25, leading to the Greek War of Independence. His body was rescued by Greek sailors and eventually enshrined in Athens.

To the immediate south of the Cathedral is the little Church of St. Eleftherios also called the Little Mitropoli.

In the Square in front of the Cathedral stand two statues. The first is that of Saint Constantine XI the Ethnomartyr, the last Byzantine Emperor. The second is a statue of Archbishop Damaskinos who was Archbishop of Athens during World War II and was Regent for King George II and Prime Minister of Greece in 1946.

The Metropolitan Cathedral remains a major landmark in Athens and the site of important ceremonies with national political figures present, as well as weddings and funerals of the rich and famous.

Athens, a Mystical Metropolis. 4K. July 2021.

Divine, chaotic, vibrant, contrasting, rebellious, sensual and sophisticated. Athens seems to be a perfect homeplace for its complicated, mythological ancients gods. Although much celebrated for its classical antique heritage, its multilayered history and culture proves that it is much more than that. Nowadays a sprawling urban metropolis, its dense omnipresent concrete appartment buildings with grafitti provide fertile grounds to a vibrant, ever young society. Here, alternative bars, artesenal workshops, traditional shops, tavernas and art galleries form part of people's residential homes. In the centre of the city, the Acropolis dominates and demands eternal veneration for its beautiful, awesome appearence. Its ancient, strong energy is extremely palpable. Surrounding it are the rustic, bougainvillea filled winding alleys of its old town, filled in by ruins of antiquity and with streams of tourists. Some of its historic houses are renovated to their former glory, others are almost unnoticeably decaying under the burning sun, being home to stray cats and forgotten stories. Among them, the dozens of modest Byzantine churches, absorbed in the cityscape, form another ancient yet still contemporary part of Athens' spiritual life. With its mystical, ungraspable atmosphere, they provide a deep and peaceful hideaway from the city's buzzling life. Moreover, they are a humbler yet very rich testimony of how the city experienced renaissances after periods of turmoil. Ottoman mosques, bazaars, historical town houses, and its multicultural history and presence provide another depth to the complex DNA of this world-class metropolis.

As such, Athens is a city that integrates the ancient with the modern, East and West, anarchy with surrender to divine power, roughness with sensuality, folklore with highbrow art. It rises and it falls, and it gets up again. Its eternity is a symbol of its vital, dynamic life-force. It will never leave you indifferent.

A Walk through the City of Athens - Greece 4K Travel Channel

Our walk through Athens shows impressions from our stay in Athens. We start our walk next to the convention center. In the park you see a statue of Eleftherios Venizelos, a Greek prime minister who is still admired today.
No matter where you move in Athens, almost everywhere you have an unobstructed view of the Acropolis or the Lycabettus with the beautiful little chapel.
We continue our way to the Plaka and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. It is the largest Greek temple in Athens. The Temple of Olympian Zeus was completed in the 2nd century AD by the Roman Emperor Hadrian. In the Middle Ages, the temple was presumably destroyed by an earthquake. Nevertheless, the remaining columns impress by their size .
The gate which originally marked the entrance into the sacred district is named after emperor Hadrian.
On the opposite side is a bust of the famous Greek singer, actress and politician Melina Mercouri.
In Athens, you can even admire Greek art treasures outside the museums. Some few pieces are exhibited in the metro stations. We take the metro to Monastiraki Square. From the Monastiraki Square you have a beautiful view of the Acropolis.
In the district Psyrri, we come across the Agios Dimitrios and see the first Christmas decoration on the facades.
At nightfall we reach Syntagma Square. The fountain in the middle of the square shines in different colors from which red is our favorite. Opposite, in front of the Parliament the changing of the guard takes place .
We arrive at the Skyfall bar. From the terrace one has the best view over Parliament, the Lycabettus and the beautiful illuminated Acropolis. We were surprised by heavy rain, accompanied by hail, but the thunderstorm moves on quickly.
Once back at Monastiraki Square, we throw a glance at the illuminated Hadrian's Library and the Acropolis.

ATHENS - ancient Greek city [ HD ]

Athens was the world’s first democratic state. Known as the ‘cradle of western civilization’ , its culture spawned the great philosophers and writers – Socrates, Plato and Aristotle among them.

Do not let your initial impression of Athens close your mind to this wonderful city. The eighth-largest metropolis in Europe, it appears, through the heat haze and traffic fug, a distinctly uninspiring concrete mass sprawling across the plain of Attica on the coast of southeastern Greece. But give yourself time to explore central Athens, a relatively small area, and a different picture emerges. Starting from Syntagma, the central square, you will discover far more than a pile of ancient monuments; although, of course, there are plenty of those, too.

Greece's capital city is Athens. Ancient Greece, powerful culture and empire, was likewise centred there. The Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient monuments like the colonnaded Parthenon temple, still stands as a dominant feature of the city. Sculptures, vases, jewellery, and other artefacts from Ancient Greece are preserved at the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.

Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years, and its earliest human presence starting somewhere between the 11th and 7th millennia BC.[Classical Athens was a powerful city-state that emerged in conjunction with the seagoing development of the port of Piraeus, which had been a distinct city prior to its 5th century BC incorporation with Athens. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, it is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely because of its cultural and political impact on the European continent, and in particular the Romans. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2015, Athens was ranked the world's 29th richest city by purchasing power and the 67th most expensive[ in a UBS study.

It is the birth place of democracy and the heart of the Ancient Greek civilization. Athens is named after the Greek goddess Athena. She was the goddess of wisdom, war, and civilization and the patron of the city of Athens. Her shrine, the Parthenon, sits on top of a hill in the center of the city.

The Ultimate Athens City Guide / GREECE

This is your ultimate guide to Athens. I spent 2 full days there before moving to Santorini Island and saw as much as possible.

My first recommendation is go to Mount Lycabettus for sunrise or sunset. Be aware, it will get crowded with lots of people. So best to go an hour before sunset to make sure to use the cable car or take the long and challenging hike up that is rewarding in its own sense.

Next, visit the Hilton Hotel rooftop bar or restaurant for great views of the city and Acropolis while having a fancy dinner. Of course, if it's not in your budget, the new Acropolis museum has stunning views of the Acropolis as well.

Make sure to walk to Plaka district, just 10 minutes from the entrance of he Acropolis. It's well worth it to see a unique neighborhood and full of cool shops, tasty food and unique bars.

Make sure to eat anything with eggplant, Greek salad and anything with lamb.
